El Semanario Edison Language Academy – Together Through Two Languages (310) 828-0335 www.edison.smmusd.org FROM THE PRINCIPALS DESK: I CANT DO THAT --- YET FEBRUARY 9-13, 2015 ANNOUNCEMENTS On Friday, February 6, winter progress reports go home. They report on the progress made to date toward meeting the year-end standards. Keep in mind that the students have until June to meet these standards – and some of the various skills listed may have not even been taught yet. This report lets you know how much progress they have made, using this scale: 4 - Masters Standards: Student demonstrates mastery of strand or cluster or standards expected by the end of the school year. Mastery is not generally achieved until the end of the year. 3 – Approaching Mastery: Student has mastered or nearly mastered some, but not all of the standards within a strand or cluster. Student is well on the way toward mastery by end of the year. 2 – Making Some Progress Toward Standards: Since the beginning of the year, student demonstrates growth toward many of the standards within the strand or cluster. With continued work and support, student may reach mastery by the end of the year. 1 – Making Little Progress Toward Standards: Student has demonstrated little progress toward mastery since the beginning of the year. Considerable work and support will be needed for student to achieve mastery. During this reporting period, you want to see your child “making some progress” or “approaching mastery.” Teachers are differentiating instruction and providing extra support for those students who are scoring 1s and 2s and will want to confer with you about how we can work together to accelerate and support your child’s progress. The best way to think about this report if your child receives 3s, 2s, or 1s, is that they have not mastered standards -- yet. Not that they can’t, and not that they won’t. It just hasn’t happened yet. It will take continued perseverance and work – perhaps a little more work than done in the past – but mastery can happen. World-renowned Stanford Psychologist Carol Dweck speaks of the “power of yet” – helping students to reframe “I can’t do it” to “I can’t do it yet”. It changes the statement from a negative to a positive. So if your child is discouraged to see less than 4s on their progress report, remind them that with work and determination, they can get to mastery. Then talk with his or her teacher to see how you can best support that effort. ANUNCIOS

What do parents say?

“I can’t say enough good things about Elemental Strings…I highly recommend it for your child. Music is about sharing and this a great opportunity to experience it! My daughter improved so much because of the orchestra. I’m impressed!” —Freddy

“My son loves going to rehearsals—even though he knew no one at the start of the season. There’s a friendly and fun vibe to the program, yet it is also serious and focused. And all the students are into it…Our best overall after-school activity!”—Robin

Elemental Strings and Band has served the Santa Monica community for over ten years, helping hundreds of young students find their voice as musicians. Our programs have been developed by experienced teachers, many of whom work for the SMMUSD in various capacities, to help prepare students for middle school and beyond.

Do you have a young musician who might be interested in participating in the future? Come check out our programs at one of the open houses in February!

Elemental Strings: our signature string orchestra program for elementary school-aged students was started in 2004. Participants are in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades with a minimum of 8 months of instruction. Open House on Friday, Feb 13, 3:45-5:45 at JAMS Room 25.

Prelude Program: our beginning strings program provides a strong foundation to good technique and note reading in a fun, orchestral setting. No previous experience is necessary. Open House on Tuesday, Feb 17, 3:30-5:30 at McKinley Auditorium.

Elemental Band: our youth concert band program began in 2012 and is the only one like it in southern California.
