    weatherization)andrevitalizeunderusedspacesascommunityassets.Wehavealignedourbaselinedatafortheneighborhoodwiththegoalsandtargetslaidout

    intheSustainableDCplan,releasedinFebruary2013. 1

    WhilewecanttracktheamountofenergyusedwithinourANCboundaries,wedoknowhowmuchenergywasusedoverallinthezipcode20009,asMWCOGreceivesthesenumbersinreportsfromPepcoandWGESeachyear.Customersin20009accountedfor2.45%ofcitywidenaturalgasuseand3.6%ofcitywideelectricityusein2012.2

    AdamsMorganliesonaboundarylinebetweentwowatershedsRockCreekandtheWashingtonMetropolitanwatershed.AdamsMorganisalsowithintheboundariesofDCs

    CombinedSewageOverflowsystem,meaningthatduringheavyrains,whenstormsewersbecometoofull,sewageismixedinandreleasedintothesewatersheds.ThismakesitparticularlyimportantinAdamsMorgantodowhatwecantoreducestormwaterrunoffbycapturingrainfallwithbioswales,raingardens,greenroofs,orrainbarrels.Wecanalsomitigatestormwaterrunoffbyreplacingimpervioussurfaceswithpermeablepavementorplants.Todate,onlyonehouseinAdamsMorganhasinstalledarainbarrelandnootherimprovementshavebeenrecordedthroughtheRiverSmartHomesprogram.AnerosioncontrolprojectwasundertakeninKaloramaParktocontrolexcessivestormwaterrunofffromslopesandhardsurfaceswithintheparkin2010-2011,butwasunsuccessful.DPRandDGSarenowworkingtofundrepairsandhavepostedapageontheirwebsitetotrackdevelopmentsintheproject.3Pesticidesareanothercommonwaterpollutant.Recently,DCpassedapesticidereformactthatrequiresIntegratedPestManagementandlimitsuseofsyntheticpesticidesonallgovernment,school,andchildcarefacilitygrounds.Thisisprimarilytolimithumanexposuretotoxics,butwillalsoservetoreducetheamountofpesticidesthatwashoffofthosegroundsintonearbybodiesofwater.WeencourageadoptionofintegratedpestmanagementororganicapproachesforallparksandgreenspacesinAdamsMOrgan.

    Allbusinesses,schools,churches,andresidenceswith4ormoreunitsarerequiredtocontractwithprivatewasteandrecyclinghaulers.Recyclingisarequiredservice,buteachhaulermaycollectdifferentmaterials.AccordingtoDPW:

    ItemsthattheDistrictrequirescommercialpropertiestorecycle TheDistrictregulatesrecyclingbottles,cansandpaperinallbusinesses.Glass,metal,paper,corrugatedcardboardandnarrow-neckedplasticbottlesmustbeseparatedandcontainerizedindependentlyofothersolidwaste.Enforcementactionsthatcanbetakenifacommercialpropertydoesnotrecycle

    Acommercialpropertycanbefinedforfailingtocomplywiththerecyclingregulations.Thefinesrangefrom$200forafirstoffenseto$1500forthethirdviolationofthesameregulationwithin60days.

    BecausetherearesomanybuildingsinAdamsMorganthatarerequiredtocontractwithprivatehaulers,itsalargetasktoaccountforallcompaniesworkinginAdamsMorgan.Wedoknowthereareatleast11companiescollectingfromrestaurantsandbusinessesontheEastsideof18thStreet,alongwith4differentgreasecollectors.Ofthe11,only6areonthelistofcommercialhaulersregisteredwithDPW.Theconsequenceofhavingsomanydifferentcompaniesservingonestreetisincreasedtrafficinthealleyways,andincreasedfuelusebythosehaulers.Legalrequirementsforcommercialwastedisposalandrecyclingcanbefoundhere,alongwithalistofauthorizedhaulers:http://dpw.dc.gov/service/commercial-recycling

    changedthedisinfectantfromchlorinetochloramineintheirwatertesting,causingleadfrompipestobegintoleachintothewater,todangerouslyhighlevels,inthousandsofDChouseholds.In2004,chloraminewasdiscontinuedasadisinfectant.And,accordingtoDCWater,In2004,theWashingtonAqueductbeganaddingorthophosphateforcorrosioncontroltreatmentandtoreduceleadreleaseinwater.Orthophosphateisatasteless,odorless,food-gradeadditiveusedtopreventpipecorrosioninthedistributionsystemandinhouseholdplumbing.Itworksbyformingaprotectivecoatinginsidepipesandplumbingfixtures,thatreducestheamountofleadreleasedinwater.TheadditionoforthophosphatehasbeeneffectiveinreducingleadlevelsinDistricthouseholdswithleadservicepipesandotherhouseholdleadsources.AtCongressionalhearingsin2010,concernswereraisedabout9,100residencesintheDistrict.Alsoin2010,theCDCreportedthat15,000homesintheDCareamightstillhavewatersupplieswithdangerouslevelsoflead.TherewereseveralhomesinAdamsMorgan.DCWaterencourageseveryonewithleadservicelinestotest,andtoalsousefilters.Drinkingwaterislead-freepriortoenteringindividualpipes.
