Program Overview

Introduction

In this tutorial, we will learn about the enVisionmath2.0 program for Common Core, Grades 6-8. We will begin by exploring the program goal, organization, and components, as well as support for the Common Core State Standards (or CCSS) in Mathematics. We will also review some of the planning resources, lesson structure, and differentiation support to help you navigate through the program. Last, we will take a quick look at the end-of-topic resources and available assessments to ensure program success.

enVisionmath2.0 is a core program developed for middle grades. It is based on an effective curriculum that embraces time-proven research principles for teaching mathematics with understanding.

Organization

The curriculum is organized to help students meet the goals of the CCSS for Mathematics. This includes a coherent and comprehensive pathway to algebra. Standards with a common focus are grouped into clusters. Similarly, enVisionmath2.0 is organized to help students focus on clusters of Common Core State Standards within a grade. The enVisionmath2.0 Common Core Cluster Wheel provides a visual representation of how lessons, topics, and clusters are organized at each grade level. Certain clusters (those that are part of the pathway to algebra) are considered Major Content clusters. Major Content clusters, color-coded green, get the most emphasis. Supporting Content clusters, color-coded blue, support the major work, and Additional Content clusters, color-coded yellow, complete the grade-level content. Each cluster in enVisionmath2.0 focuses on one or more topics to promote conceptual

understanding.

Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP)

Organization by clusters is strengthened by authentic connections to the Standards for Mathematical Practice (or SMP). SMP are the habits of mind, processes, and dispositions that enable students to understand mathematics and to use or do mathematics with understanding. These practices are infused in all aspects of the program.

Focus, Coherence, and Rigor

The program is also organized to promote focus for deeper understanding, develop coherence within and across grade levels, and lay the foundation for rigor. To help students meet rigorous expectations, enVisionmath2.0 centers around three aspects of rigor: conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application. With conceptual understanding and application, students demonstrate deep understanding of core math concepts by applying them to new situations, as well as writing and speaking about their understanding. Fluency marks the endpoint of learning progressions. Students should have no hesitation in getting the answer, either mentally or with paper and pencil.

enVisionmath2.0 is available in print and online at PearsonRealize.com. Some of the student resources include a two-volume consumable text, an additional practice workbook, an eText, and a multitude of digital resources at PearsonRealize.com. Teacher resources include a two-volume Teacher’s Edition, Teacher’s Resource Masters, Teacher’s Edition Program Overview, Math Diagnosis and Intervention System 2.0 (or MDIS 2.0), professional development videos, and many additional resources available online at PearsonRealize.com and in print. In addition to the traditional pathway in Grades 6 through 8, there is also an Accelerated Grade 7 pathway. The Accelerated Grade 7 edition aligns 100 percent with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics compacted version, and ensures students are ready to take Algebra 1 in Grade 8. We will explore many of the additional resources for both students and teachers later in this tutorial.

enVisionmath2.0 provides a variety of support materials to help you plan and prepare students for instruction-including a Topic Overview, Topic Planner, Topic Readiness Assessment, Topic Opener, STEM Project, and Get Ready! section. Now, let’s explore these support materials.

Planning begins with the Topic Overview in your Teacher’s Edition. Here you will find Math Background support for Focus, Coherence, and Rigor, as well as the SMP, mentioned earlier in this tutorial.

The Topic Planner provides an overview of the lessons, including vocabulary, objectives, essential understandings, and covered standards. In addition, it provides a synopsis of the print and digital topic and lesson resources.

Topic Readiness Assessment

The Topic Readiness Assessment allows you to assess your student’s readiness for the content of the topic and prescribe interventions as needed. Additionally, students can take the Topic Readiness Assessment online at PearsonRealize.com, where it is auto-scored and an individualized Adaptive Study Plan is generated.

Topic Opener

The Topic Opener resources include the Topic Essential Questions and 3-Act Mathematical Modeling. Topic Essential Questions are available throughout the topic along with teacher guidance for answering them. The 3-Act Mathematical Modeling resource provides a way to generate excitement about the upcoming lesson by having students read about the math-modeling problem for the topic. Lesson videos are also provided with support notes to help you integrate the videos into your classroom.

STEM Project

STEM Projects present students with situations that address real social, economic, and environmental issues. The projects incorporate the engineering processes and are fully aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards*. Get Ready

The Get Ready! resource allows you to activate students’ prior knowledge and practice the prerequisite skills needed for success in each topic. The Vocabulary Review and Build Vocabulary features help strengthen understanding of terms used in the topic. In addition, the Get Ready! resource also provides you with guidance to assign additional practice for students who need more help prior to starting a new topic through the Item Analysis for Diagnosis and Intervention.

Lesson Overview

Each lesson in enVisionmath2.0 begins with a Lesson Overview containing the CCSS, Objectives, Essential Understanding, Vocabulary, and Materials section. At the top of the Lesson Overview page in the Teacher’s Edition you will find the Digital Resources available on PearsonRealize.com. The icons point out the various interactive technology tools available, such as videos and interactivities that support the lesson content. The Essential Understanding is central to the lesson content and helps you focus student attention on the most important math concepts. Keep the Essential Understanding in mind as you plan out lessons, engage students in the content, and assess their understanding. In addition, the content Focus, Coherence, and Rigor for in-depth understanding of CCSS are outlined in this section. In the Mathematics Overview section, you'll find the Common Core Standards and Mathematical Practice Standards addressed in the lesson. The Listen and Look For Video referenced in the Lesson Overview section contains important information on introducing the content, including the Essential Understanding for the lesson, an in-depth look at a Key Problem, and specific strategies for you to use with students. There are two videos available per topic.

Math Anytime

In the Math Anytime section you will find the Today’s Challenge. This activity can be used any time during the topic. Each challenge begins with a factoid to set the context for the learning. After the factoid, there are five problems that use the same data, but become increasingly harder each day. Students may be asked to:

model to solve the problem,

explain how they solved a problem,

use reasoning to solve a problem, or

extend their thinking as they work through a problem. For the final problem, students are presented with a do-it-yourself (or DIY) problem. Here students are asked to create their own problem using the available data. There are on-screen tools available to help them write and model their problem. Students can save their work and then submit it for teacher review. The Today’s Challenge Teacher’s Guide-available only online-provides instructional support for each of the Today’s Challenge problems. It includes a section with Guiding Questions and Differentiated Instruction support that includes vocabulary review, extra support for English language learners, and Extension.

Lesson Structure

The enVisionmath2.0 core instructional model is built on the interaction between problem-based learning and explicit visual instruction. These components are reflected in the three-step instructional design of each lesson that includes:

Problem-Based Learning,

Visual Learning, and

Assess and Differentiate. Let’s take a closer look at this three-step lesson structure.

Step 1 - Develop: Problem-Based Learning

The first step of every lesson begins with developing problem-based learning. Problem-based learning is used to engage students in authentic, real-world tasks that develop mathematical understanding. The Solve and Discuss It!, Explore It!, and Explain It! portion of the lesson use an inquiry-based problem-solving structure. Here, students use mathematical practices, modeling, and reasoning to formulate solutions. This is also where you and your students discuss the different strategies used to solve the problem. On Pearson Realize, students can work on problems and then submit their work for teacher review. As students make these connections, conceptual understanding emerges. In addition, the write-in text at all grade levels allows students to explain their reasoning and communicate their understanding. The Teacher’s Edition provides support to facilitate these question-driven conversations before, during, and after the activity.

Step 2 - Develop: Visual Learning

The second step of a lesson, Develop Visual Learning, is where important mathematical ideas and new concepts are made explicit through enhanced direct instruction. In this section, a series of visual examples-referred to as the Visual Learning Bridge-introduce and connect students’ thinking from the Solve and Discuss It! section to the new mathematical ideas of the lesson. To ensure students have sufficient practice opportunities, the Try It! and Additional Example activities on Pearson Realize use parameterized exercises that encourage them to “Try Another One.” In addition, the Practice and Problem Solving exercises help build proficiency as students work on their own. Some lessons include leveled practice with scaffolding. Students can complete the Practice and Problem Solving items online with MathXL for School. These exercises are auto-scored and have built-in learning aids to help provide support, including Help Me Solve This, View an Example, and Virtual Nerd videos. Teacher support includes adaptations for remediation and enrichment masters along with an Item Analysis Chart to provide Depth of Knowledge levels for all exercises.

Personalized Practice

In addition, Adaptive Practice Powered by Knewton provides students with online personalized practice. As students work on problems, Knewton gathers information to intelligently prescribe tasks and content to meet their individual learning needs, automatically, and in real time! The tasks provide both on-level and prerequisite skills support and practice. The Adaptive Practice assignments provide a more productive experience because they are tailored to each student’s needs and understanding. The more students use the assignments, the better Knewton gets at adapting to their needs. This helps ensure that students are ready to progress to the next day’s objective.

Step 3 - Assess & Differentiate

The third step of the lesson, Assess and Differentiate, is where you prescribe differentiated instruction of key understandings and skills, as well as extend intervention, on-level, and advanced support. The Lesson Quiz, available in print and online, can be used to assign differentiated interventions. The online version is auto-scored, providing auto-assigned intervention or enrichment for students. Here you will also find Video Tutorials, powered by Virtual Nerd. These are available for homework and practice support and can be accessed on any device including smartphones.

Differentiation Support

Comprehensive differentiation instruction and intervention resources are available for you to provide support for all learners. The resources include system- and teacher-driven opportunities to personalize learning through a library of resources. The Topic Readiness Assessment, which we looked at earlier, is used to determine your students' readiness for the topic content and prescribe interventions as needed. You can administer this assessment online and in print. The online assessment is auto-scored, and an individualized study plan is generated based on the student’s score. Each student receives a study plan tailored to his or her specific needs. You can also choose from a library of differentiation and intervention resources. There are many assessment options available in enVisionmath2.0. They include:

Topic Cumulative/Benchmark Assessments,

Next Generation Assessment Practice Performance Tasks,

Next Generation Assessment Practice Tests, and

MDIS 2.0. Many of these assessments are available in print and online. In addition, the assessment items have content and formats that help prepare students for high-stakes Common Core tests. A variety of auto-generated assessment reports providing clear and usable data are also available online. These reports show mastery, progress, and usage data to monitor students’ progress and inform instruction.
