Loc Wall is built with a core of wooden beams and insulation. Painted MDF-boards give the wall a smooth and solid surface, which is lined with aluminium profiles. Loc Wall is produced in three different models with sound resistance levels, Loc Wall 42, Loc Wall 46 and Loc Wall 49. In Loc Wall 46 and Loc Wall 49, a plasterboard is fitted between the MDF-board and the core of the wall to increase sound resistance. All three models are declared in this EPD.

The Loc Wall partition wall is built as a modular system with barely visible joints between the modules. Pre-constructed modules are simply mounted into buildings for partitioning of building interiors. The surface of the wall is painted with optional colours. The design of the partition wall makes it easy to disassemble, move and put together again without breaking any parts. Thus, during its lifetime Loc Wall can be moved several times to conform with changes in the indoor layout of the building.

Product description

1 m² of the fullwall element of the Loc Wall partition system, including the associated fixing components and sealants at the interfaces with the stationary wall, floor and ceiling.

Cradle to Grave, except for use phase - the following stages have been declared: A1-3, A4-5, C1-4. See flowsheet to the right.

All major raw materials and all the essential energy is included. Production processes for raw materials and energy flows which represent very small amounts (<1 %) have been excluded. This cut-off rule does not apply for hazardous substances.

Loc Wall 46 Loc Wall 49

The allocation is made in accordance with the provisions of EN 15804. Principally allocation is avoided by subdivision of included processes. When subdivision is no option, incoming energy and material flows are allocated among all products made in the given process-based on physical relationships between them. Energy flows in Moelven Modus factory, which could not be subdivided (lights, computers, heating etc.) were allocated based on the amount of space that each product requires for its production. Division by use of space is well applicable in this case because, besides the production units for which energy use was subdivided, the factory is largely used as a warehouse.

Specific data for usage of energy and materials have been used for 86-92 % of the product's mass (86 % for Loc Wall 42, 92 % for Loc Wall 46/49. Background data have been modelled with generic data from the Ecoinvent 3.1 database. The data is representative according to temporal, geographical and technological requirements. Background datasets are from 2003 orlater, and updated within the last 5 years. For assessment of MDF-boards, plasterboards and glass wool verified EPD:s were used as datasource (see full references in biblography at the end of this EPD). Specific processes were assessed with average data for one year of production (principally year 2014).

The following information describes the scenarios in the different modules of the EPD.

The RSL of 60 years is defined for a scenario with standard use in an office environment, which could involve moving of the partition wall to conform to changes in the office space. Accidents or other types of unexpected changes of environment are not taken into account for the RSL.

The manufacture of Loc Wall at Moelven Modus factory comprises milling, cutting and painting of MDF-boards. Plasterboards (only used in Loc Wall 46/49) and wooden studs are also cut according to specific order. Further, sealing strips are glued onto aluminium connectors. All of the components are packed on wooden pallets for transport to the building site (A4).

The estimation of an average distance between the production unit and construction site is based on actual distances between the production unit and main cities within Sweden and Norway. Module A4 has been divided into two values depending on whether the wall is used in Norway (A4-1) or Sweden (A4-2).

Packagings to recyclingMaterial loss (spillage)

The installation of the Loc Wall does not require any use of materials or energy. The walls are fitted and installed manually with the use of basic building tools. Usage of manual tools have not been included in this assessment. During the installation of the components, packagings are sorted and disposed. Material spillage from installation and waste management of packagings are the only flows reported in module A5.

49

--

The usage of the Loc Wall partition system does generally not entail any specific maintenance. Modules B1 and B5-B7 have been assessed as non-relevant as Loc Wall does not require any materials or energy for usage or refurbishment. In case of stains, the prescribed cleaning procedure includes usage of lukewarm water and a mild neutral or alkaline detergent. Cleaning and maintanance (modules B2-B4) have been excluded from the study due to uncertainties and inablility to control how the product is managed by the final user.

After disassembly, MDF-boards and plasterboards are separated from the aluminium frame. To separate the components of the wall, metal parts are unbolted leaving even small metal parts separated from the rest of the materials and thus easy to sort for recycling. When separated, plasterboards, insulation, and aluminium components are sent to recycling, while MDF-boards, and wooden studs are discharged for incineration.

In the GWP-category, module A1 shows a lower environmental impact due to consideration of uptake of biogenic CO2 in wood-based components. The biogenic CO2 is modelled to be released in module C3, which explains the high impact within GWP for this module. The difference between Loc Wall 46 and Loc Wall 49 is that Loc Wall 49 is built with wider aluminium profiles. Values for the impact from Loc Wall 49 have been used to represent both Loc Wall 46 and 49 in this EPD, as the variation in environmental impact between the products does not exceed +-10 % (deviation ranges between 0,1-10 %, with the highest deviation within the category AP). The actual environmental impact from Loc Wall 46 is lower than presented in this EPD.

Emission tests have been performed on the MDF board (which is the component of Loc Wall which most likely could affect the indoor climate) and a declaration of the results can be found in Appendix 7 of the LCA-report (LCA-report Sweco 2016-1). Performed tests on the MDF board indicate that the component meets the requirements for low emissions (M1) according to EN15251: 2007 Appendix E. The paint does not contain any toxic substances or substances with irritating properties. Remaining components do not emit any notable substances into air.
