Propulsion and Controls
Environmental Product Declaration
The BOMBARDIER* MITRAC* TC 3300 portfolio is the world-leading family of traction converters based on industry standard IGBT technology. The high performance paired with high energy efficiency and integrated power management functions makes the MITRAC TC 3300 traction converters the right choice for environmentally sustainable locomotives and high speed power heads. Bombardier has sold more than 6,400 high power MITRAC TC 3300 traction converters.
The newest members of the family, the MITRAC TC 3300 IGBT traction converters, are based on a unique concept guaranteeing maximum commonality and flexibility: one basic design can be adapted for a wide range of different applications to fit individual needs.
The equipment is robust, easy to maintain, designed to withstand extreme environments, and includes a drive control system with high-performance adhesion control. It covers all types of locomotive and high speed power head applications, from AC and DC to multi-system solutions for cross-border operation and diesel-electric and dual-power (supporting both electric and diesel operation) locomotives to extend coverage into non-electrified areas. The benefits for our customers are propulsion and control systems that meet current and future requirements in an economic and environmentally sustainable manner, delivering maximum performance and reliability.

Manufacturing, Use and End-of-life activitiesThe table below shows the materials used for the production and maintenance of one MITRAC TC 3300 MS V04 summarized into overall material groups. The recyclability calculations are based on existing recycling processes that are commercially available and technically possible today. The reuse of materials as well as energy recovery during end-of-life activities are also included in the recyclability rate which is estimated to be 99% for one MITRAC TC 3300 MS V04.
(LCA) study2 performed according to ISO 14040:2006.The LCA covers the environmental aspects for the extraction and production of raw materials used for production and maintenance as well as transportation of major parts to the assembly plant. Further on it includes the electric energy (8 231 kWh) and water (6.8 m3) consumption for the final assembly as well as end-of-life activities. The energy consumption during the use phase for one MITRAC TC 3300 MS V04 is calculated to be 3.1 GWh.
Resource utilizationThe following tables describe the utilization of materials and primary energy resources from a life-cycle perspective. They include the cradle to grave data for the production of materials and electricity for one MITRAC TC 3300 MS V04. •The Manufacturing phase covers the raw materials and
primary energy needed for their production. It also includes the energy and water consumed for the final assembly.
•The Use phase covers the production of maintenance materials as well as energy used in operation.
•The End-of-life phase covers recycling, energy recovery and disposal of the different materials. The negative values are due to avoided virgin materials or energy production from conventional sources.

Waste generation The table below shows the waste generated during the different activities throughout the entire life-cycle of the MITRAC TC 3300 MS V04. It is divided into hazardous, non-hazardous, radioactive and inert waste. Those are generated during raw material extraction, primary material and energy production.•ThemainconstituentsoftheHazardous waste fraction
are residues from metal ore mining and processing.
•TheNon-hazardous waste fraction comprises mainly slag and other residues from metal production.
•Radioactive waste arises from mining of uranium and plutonium and partially from the depleted nuclear fuel used for electricity production.
•TheInert waste fraction is the biggest and consists of tailings and other by-products of raw material extraction processes.
