ABB Automation Products GmbH inLampertheim is a part of ABB’s Automationsegment. It develops and supplies electricalmachines and drives for ABB Group’scustomers world-wide and carriesresponsibility for several key productgroups, including DC drives , enclosedconverter and drive systems for speedcontrol of electric motors.

Environmental managementThe ISO 14001 international environmentalmanagement standard has beenimplemented and the factory has beencertified since 2000. Life cycle assessmentis applied to new products.

Product descriptionABB Automation Products GmbH, DrivesGroup comprises the following product lines

DCS 400 power range 9 to 522 kW DCS 500 power range 10 to 4,6 MW DCS 600 power range 10 to 4,6 MW

Use of the productElectric motors account for 65 per cent ofthe electricity consumed in industrialapplications. Conventional electric motorsthat drive, for example, Extruders, Metals,Cranes, Paper Machines, Ski Lifts,Cement Mills, Mining, and Winders arefixed-speed devices. In variable speeddrives, motor speed is directly variedelectronically. This results in considerableenergy savings over less efficientsystems. Saving energy helps save theenvironment through reduced emissionsfrom energy production, hence the mostsignificant environmental aspect of ABBAutomation, Drives Group is to help itscustomers save energy as well asreducing losses of productsmanufactured.

The DCS 400 drive is a cost-efficient andeasy-to-use solution for controlling smallDC motors. The DCS 400 makes controlmore efficient in all types of industrialapplications with small DC motors. It isused in many applications includingconveying, printing, mixing and ski-liftmachinery.

The product does not need periodicmaintenance and causes no emissionsduring use.

Functional unitThe investigated drive in the studyreferenced below is an DCS 401.0020which is a 500 V, 12 kW device withprotection class IP00. To makecomparisions between different drive unitseasier, numerical values given in thefollowing chapters are normalized for adrive of 1 kW which is regarded as a so-called functional unit.

The environmental impacts of the DCS 400were studied with the help of life cycleassessment (LCA) using the Evaluationmethod “Eco-indicator 95”.The product was considered to have alifetime of 10 years, usagetime of 1560 h/ain a 12 kW winder application in CentralEurope.

DCS 400 products are manufactured atABB’s factory in Lampertheim, Germany. For the evaluation of the environmentalperformance and the LCA study, it wasassumed that the product is manufacturedin Lampertheim

Environmental performance

Boundaries of the LCAThe life cycle assessment covers allphases of the product’s life, i.e. data of raw materials and components

of the product and significantprocesses at suppliers, includingenergy and chemicals usage, production waste and emissions aswell as internal transports

manufacturing phase of the product atABB Automation Products GmbH

usage phase as described under“Functional unit”

all parts are landfilled, because thedirections of the waste managementfor industrial waste are missing inGermany at the moment

Positive aspects of using the product atcustomers have not been included

The data and calculations are inaccordance with Product SpecificRequirements (PSR) for Variable SpeedElectric Drives, which specifies thefollowing baselines for the LCAcalculation.

Calculations are based on an estimatedlifetime of 10 years when operating 1560hours per year. A German mix of energyhas been used for calculating energy

Comments

Almost all environmental impacts ofthe product come from the usagephase and are favourable whichmeans that the product when usedhas a positive impact on theenvironment, compared toconventional applications. Theabsolute value of the manufacturing, dismantling and transports is only 1 %of that of the usage phase.

The best way to improve the product’senvironmental compatibility would beto enhance the DC converter’sefficiency. Most of the environmentalloads come from the heatsink andespecially PCBs.

Instructions on how to recycle an end-of-life product are given in thedocument “DCS 400 product family,Environmental information, Recyclinginstructions” which is available fromABB Automation Products, DrivesGroup.

GLOSSARY

Acidification, AP. Chemical alternation of the environment, resultingin hydrogen ions being produced more rapidly than they aredispersed or neutralized. Occurs mainly through fallout of sulfur andnitrogen compounds from combustion processes. Acidification can beharmful to terrestrial and aquatic life.

Global warming potential, GWP. The index used to translate thelevel of emissions of various gases into a common measure tocompare their contributions to the absorption by the atmosphere ofinfrared radiation. GWPs are calculated as the absorption that wouldresult from the emission of 1 kg of a gas to that from emission of 1 kgof carbon dioxide over 100 years.

Life cycle assessment, LCA. A management tool for appraising andquantifying the total environment impact of products or activities overtheir entire life cycle of particular materials, processes, products, technologies, services or activities. Life cycle assessment comprisesthree complementary components-inventory analysis, impact analysisand improvement analysis.

Ozone depletion potential, ODP. The index used to translate thelevel of emissions of various substances into a common measure tocompare their contributions to the breakdown of the ozone layer.ODPs are calculated as the change that would result from theemission of 1 kg of a substance to that from emission of 1 kg of CFC-11 (a freon)

Photochemical ozone creation, POCP. The index to translate thelevel of emissions of various gases into a common measure tocompare their contributions to the change of ground-level ozoneconcentration. POCPs are calculated as the change that would resultfrom the emission of 1 kg of a gas to that from emission of 1 kg ofethylene.
