environmental metrics reporting
Measuring past purchases against the
rigor of recognized and respected
certifications in sustainability is an
effective way to understand the current
environmental performance of the
products you purchase from Steelcase.
This Environmental Metrics Report
includes data on your product mix against
dimensions of potential contributions to
LEED, indoor air quality, BIFMA level
certification and Cradle to Cradle
certification. As well, we’ve included
aggregate recycled content data.
We look forward to our discussion.

steelcase environmental goals and initiatives
what is it?
Developed by the US Green Building Council, LEED
is intended to provide building owners and operators
a concise framework for measurable green building
design, construction, operations, and maintenance
solutions.
why is this relevant to you?
• LEED certification offers a way to demonstrate your
commitment green building
• Steelcase can potentially help you with your green
building goals in the following ways:
• recycled content
• regional materials
• rapidly renewable materials
• certified wood
• low-emitting materials
• daylight and views
• sustainable purchasing
• innovation credits
LEED building certification contributions
what is it?
We pursue industry-independent, third-party testing
and indoor air quality certification for many of our
products and materials through the Scientific
Certification Systems' Indoor Advantage™ program:
• Demonstrates compliance to ANSI/BIFMA
criteria for low-emitting furniture
• Indoor Advantage Gold certification also
demonstrates compliance to California 01350,
ASHRAE 189.1, and CHPS Collaborative for
High Performance Schools Criteria for furniture.
why is this relevant to you?
• People spend as much as 90% of their time indoors,
either at home, work, or school. SCS Certified
furniture can help limit the amount of VOCs and
other pollutants going into the air around you.
• SCS Indoor Advantage Certified furniture may
contribute towards points needed for the U.S. Green
Building Council's LEED certification
indoor air quality
level
what is it?
The BIFMA e3 sustainability standard was
developed specifically for the contract furniture
industry. It is a point-based system that spans
social responsibility, energy use, materials
selection, and human and ecosystem health
impacts. Manufacturers earn points in these
categories, and can certify their products at
three different levels.
why is this relevant to you?
• This certification allows for an apples to
apples comparison of products across the
furniture industry.
• The objective is to provide a measurable
market-based definitions of progressively
more sustainable furniture.
BIFMA level certification
what is it?
The Cradle to Cradle Certified program is a
multi-attribute eco-label that assesses a
product’s impact on humans and the
environment and evaluates its design for future
life cycles.
We offer more Cradle to Cradle Certified
products than any other company in any
industry globally.
why is this relevant to you?
• Cradle to Cradle certification is internationally
recognized across all industries.
• The program provides guidelines to help
businesses implement the Cradle to Cradle
framework, which focuses on using materials
evaluated for environmental and human health
and components that can be disassembled
and recycled as technical nutrients or
composted as biological nutrients
cradle to cradle
recycled content
The portion of a product that is made from materials that are diverted from the waste stream.
There are two types of recycled content:
Pre-Consumer: Materials that have not fulfilled a life in a product. This can be materials
that are leftover in the manufacturing process that are diverted from the waste stream
(i.e., recycling leftover trimmings from a fabric mill).
Post-Consumer: Materials / products that have served their purpose to consumers and
are ‘waste’ to the end-user. These materials are to be repurposed or reprocessed to
become a part in a new product. (i.e., steel that was recovered from a Think Chair at
the end of its life).
recyclable content
The potential % or portion of the product that can be disassembled / broken down and
reprocessed to avoid sending it to landfill or incineration.

Leap
• Leap is up to 98% recyclable by weight.
• Leap manufacturing uses powder-coated paints, water-based adhesives
and VOC-free manufacturing processes.
• The cushioning in the back upholstery is made from 50% post-consumer
PET (for example, recycled plastic soda and water bottles) and is 100%
recyclable.
• To reduce packaging waste, the Leap chair is blanket wrapped (not boxed)
for domestic shipment. And throughout the manufacturing process, our
suppliers use reusable parts containers to further reduce waste.
• Through implementing leaner manufacturing processes, we were able to
reduce the amount of manufacturing space used to produce Leap by 74%,
resulting in a significant reduction in the amount of energy used in
production.
• The Leap chair is designed for a long life. To ensure that happens, back
cushions, seat assembly, arms, and lumbar support can be added,
changed, or replaced at any time.
• Leap is SCS Indoor Advantage™ Gold certified for indoor air quality. The
program tests and certifies products for compliance with USGBC LEED
EQ4.5 (furniture and seating).
product facts
Answer
• MBDC Silver Cradle to Cradle™ certified. This is the first C2C certification
for an entire powered workstation in the contract furniture industry. The
Cradle to Cradle Product Certification places a major emphasis on the
human and ecological health impacts of a material's ingredients, and
focuses on the ability to recycle or safely compost that material. In addition
to stringent material criteria, which includes prohibiting the use of PVC,
companies seeking this certification are required to meet strict criteria for
social fairness and corporate practices and ethics.
• level™ 2 certified to the BIFMA e3 sustainability standard. (The level 2
certification excludes wood skin panels and wood trim panels. Exclusions
are level™ 1 certified to the BIFMA e3 sustainability standard.) According to
BIFMA, the level™ conformance mark ensures a comprehensive,
independent and impartial assessment of the environmental and social
impacts of a product’s manufacture. level makes it easy to identify products
that have been evaluated against a consensus-based, multi-attribute
sustainability standard.
• SCS Indoor Advantage™ Gold certified for indoor air quality and may
contribute to LEED® certification for its reusability and recyclable content.
Steelcase has LEED-accredited professionals that can help with your LEED
applications.
• Answer's open-core construction means panel components are easily taken
apart and recycled
• Answer wiring is PVC and halogen free as well as RoHS compliant.

sustainability commitment
In 2006, we pledged to reduce our global environmental footprint by 25
percent by 2012. Reducing our environmental footprint globally means
keeping careful watch on our greenhouse gas emissions, water
consumption, energy use, and waste.
Since the goal reset in 2006, the company has reduced its greenhouse gas
emissions by 37 percent, its water consumption by 54 percent and VOC
emissions by 53 percent, and its waste by 23 percent.
Since Steelcase began tracking these metrics in 2001, the company’s
cumulative reduction has been 58 percent, 75 percent, 95 percent and 71
percent, respectively.
