• Manufactured gas plants operated from the mid-1800s to early 1900s• Used coal and oil to produce gas for lighting, heating, and cooking • Closed down with the arrival of natural gas in the 1930s• Common practice to leave byproducts on-site

• Eureka gas plant operated from the early 1900’s to the 1940’s
• Residues from gas plant - coal tar and lampblack
• Chemicals polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and
some metals and petroleum products
• Site did not present a health-risk but was part of a voluntary program to remediate sites in
accordance with today’s regulatory requirements

Cleanup – June to December 2017
• On-site treatment of 32,000 tons of soil to immobilize chemical residues
• Excavation and off-site disposal of 4,000 tons of soil
• Disposal and/or recycling of 2,500 tons of wood and concrete debris
• Soil and asphalt cover
• Post-remediation inspection and ongoing groundwater monitoring
• Local spend - $3,014,968
• 2,336 tons material recycled: asphalt, concrete, steel
• Reduction in greenhouse gas 619 MTe
