Standard • HS-ESS3-1: Construct an explanation based on evidence
for how the availability of natural resources, occurrence of natural hazards, and changes in climate have influenced human activity.
FLT • I will be able to identify the effects of air pollution by
completing 12.2 Notes
12.2 Notes
• Noise level 0 • Copy down all bolded ideas • Raise your hand to question/comment • Be prepared to pair-share
12.2: Air, Noise, and Light Pollution
Air Pollution
Air Pollution • Recall: Air pollution = when harmful substances
build up in the air to unhealthy levels • Urban air quality and indoor air quality are two
major areas of toxic pollution

Health Effects of Air Pollution
Health Effects of Air Pollution
• Short-Term Effects: – Headache, nausea,
eye/noise/throat irritation, chest tightness, coughing, bronchitis, pneumonia
Health Effects of Air Pollution • Long-Term Effects: – Emphysema, lung cancer, heart disease
Indoor Air Pollution
Indoor Air Pollution • Chemicals from carpets, building materials,
paints, and furniture often pollute the air inside a home or building
3/28/16
4
Indoor Air Pollution • Sick-Building Syndrome
= When buildings have very poor air quality • Most common in hot
regions with tightly-sealed buildings (to keep out heat)
Indoor Air Pollution • Ventilation (the mixing of outdoor and indoor
air) is necessary for good air quality
Indoor Air Pollution • Radon Gas = colorless, tasteless, odorless
radioactive gas.
Indoor Air Pollution • Radon gas can adhere to dust particles that
people inhale, eventually leading to lung cancer
Indoor Air Pollution • Asbestos = Minerals that form in long, thin fibers
that are strong and heat-resistant • Asbestos has been used as an insulator and fire
retardant
Indoor Air Pollution • It has been banned in the U.S. because it is
dangerous to inhale à can cause disease and heart failure
3/28/16
5
Noise Pollution
Noise Pollution • Noise Pollution = unwanted sound
Noise Pollution • Constant noise contributes to hearing loss – About 14.9% of teens have permanent hearing
loss due to technology – People living in quiet environments have
heightened hearing levels
Noise Pollution • Decibels (dB) = unit of measurement for the
intensity of sound • Europe regulates music players to not exceed
100 dB of noise • The U.S. does not have regulations
Light Pollution
Light Pollution • Light pollution = excessive artificial light, such
as urban sky glow
3/28/16
6
Light Pollution • Light pollution can increase headaches,
fatigue, stress, and anxiety
Light Pollution • Light pollution also diminishes the view of the
night sky, affecting animals that rely on the night sky (such as migratory birds or sea turtles)
