Movie Review: Sound of My Voice Zal Batmanglij’s directorial debut “Sound Of My Voice” starts as an interesting examination of how people succumb to a persuasive cult leader turns into a pretentious, tedious, cliché movie that turns laughably predictable. Sound of my voice is about two aspiring journalist, Peter and Lorna (Christopher Denham and Nicole Vicius), who want to get the story on a very secretive cult led by a woman who claims to come from the future. And what follows is some of the most predictable storytelling I’ve seen in quite some time. Just hearing the premise an observant filmgoer can already tell what’s going to happen. It starts off interesting; it’s well-acted for the relative unknowns they casted, the writing seemed like it would be clever. But, at about the thirty minuet mark thing come apart quickly. The first bit of criticism comes from the antagonist cult leader, Maggie. Not the way in which she is portrayed by Brit Marling (lead actor in last years, Another Earth), but in the way her char-acter is written. In the movie we are lead to believe that all the followers of this cult genuinely believe she is from the future, but the writer didn’t give the audience any evidence to why they would believe someone who is basically just telling them “No, just trust me”. I understand the writer was trying to get across that blind faith is dangerous, but, I don’t feel that he successfully did so. Aside from that, the story is very predictable. The two journalists go into the cult not believing any of it but halfway through the obvious happens, one of them falls for it. This wouldn’t matter if, again, it was believable. The movie itself makes it painfully obvious that the cult is all made up, and the main char-

acters knowing this still fall for it. This betrays the story. It feels like they gave up half way through and decided to throw in a con-trived, hackneyed, stale plot point. If there is anything good to say about the film, is that it looks great. But that doesn’t make up for its huge flaws. The worst part is that it’s such a good idea but the execution of the story makes whatever goodwill it built up in the first thirty minutes crumbles and the movie becomes laughable.

New technology hits classroom walls

A new wave of technology is being mounted on the walls of EHS. Each Classroom in the Enumclaw school district will be receiving a new “Activ” Board. The boards are loaded with a wide variety of new features which are sure to enhance the teaching and learning experience. The boards allow for a whole new level of inter-action for the students. The board improves the current system, allowing EHS students to click, drag, select and even draw with just the tip of a finger. Along with these new boards, every teacher in the district received a brand new HP Probook laptop computer. These allow the teachers to literally bring their work and grading system home with them.

Assessing assignments and inputting grades will become much easier. The laptops will also provide a connection between the new boards and the teachers. All of this new technology did not just appear out of thin air. A levy instated in 2008 allocated for the purchase of both the laptops and the boards but also provided funds for the replacement of the roof at Thunder Mountain Middle School. The laptops alone came with a hefty price tag; more than $218,000. Our world is constantly changing; one of the most important is the dynamics of how we learn. This new technology is sure to en-hance the learning experience and open new doors full of possibilities for the students of EHS.

The great bike race took place all around the plateau. And who was there to help the riders stay encouraged and hydrated? None other, than the people of Enumclaw and our very own EHS student volunteers. There were 15 students present and ac-counted for. But according to every last one of them there was one person that really stood out. Mauricio Portillo. For every bottle someone else handed out he had two or three. He was there on a mission and wasn’t going to leave till it was done. Now it could be that he only passed out so much water because, as Jennifer Hogan said, “he was the one in the front, duh,” but others think there was another reason. “His eyes just said ‘take my water,’” says Mr. Wallace. No matter the reason, the help that all the volunteers offered was truly extraordinary. But what encouraged them to be there in the first place? “I was there to be a good community citi-zen and to help out my town,” said Kevin Nelson. It seems like that is the reason everyone was there, to help out and support their Enumclaw. “It’s kind of cool to see that many people

in a small town like this,” said Tyson Shepard. The best part is probably the attitude of the all the volunteers however. Not one was upset about the weather. In true Washing-ton fashioned it was, of course, raining. But not even the bad weather could get these volunteers down though. “It would’ve been nice if it was sunny, but we still had a good time and made the best of it.” The students and to people of the town all had a great time supporting the riders. All of them would gladly do it again to, just for the experience.

Car show races through its 30th year

Last Friday, Enumclaw High School had their annual car show which has been an ongoing event for about 30 years. Over the past few years competition has been heated. John Corley showed up with his Ferrari Spyder which is always the crowd favorite. Even some of the school staff brought their cars down to the show. Newspaper and yearbook teacher Victor Wallace brought his 1966 Porsche 911. “It’s the best car by far and the story makes it cooler too,” said Nik StopsackThe car show is a great opportunity for students and staff to show off their special rides whether they are a car, truck, ATV,

motorcycle and even a go-cart. Winning first place in any categories of the car show will win you one of the many prizes. Each year students bring something new to the table, Junior Cole Lanphere entered his go-cart into the car show “I found it at my work,” said Lanphere. Although he did not win a prize he did get to show off his cool new toy. People may think that entering their cars into the car show is all about the prize but they don’t understand that it is more than that, it is a chance to show your friends and the rest of the school how cool your ride is.

The Enumclaw High School Art show is an annual event that allows students to show off their hard work and art skills they have garnered throughout the year. This year’s show was a little different. The show kicked off this year with an art auction and revealing the night of May 11, then the art was moved into its resting place. Instead of hiding the art in the library for a limited amount of time, the pieces were strewn about the 1000 hall and filled the show cases in the commons with some of the top work. Every year the goal of the art show is to get peoples art shown to the rest of the school as well as raise money for the program. This year, as a result of the new format, the goals surely were met. “The fact that it wasn’t in the library was my favorite part,” Said Senior Rebecca Messex, a talented artist and Art Show contributor. The art work shown this year didn’t just

come from a select few talented artists. This time around, any student was allowed to enter their art work, including those from elementary schools. The Art show isn’t just a show, either. This year, talented judges were brought in by Mrs. Weber to grade the art work and award the artists accordingly. Top award winners include Janice Fair in Draw-ing, Peyton Vick in Painting, and Jimmy Schweter in Digital Art This year, the photography category saw an astounding 250 entries, with top awards going out to Austin Schuver, Hayden Schmitt, Courtney Bone, and Nik Stopsack.

June second marked the night Enumclaw High School seniors have had checked on their calendars all year long. Senior Prom is the most awaited and anticipated event of the entire year, not only for seniors but for a select few juniors or underclassmen that are lucky enough to be asked to go enjoy the night with a senior. One senior who has been waiting for this night since his fresh-man year could not have been more excited. Riley Scott was a nominee for the honor of Prom King, and was heavily favored by all the voters to win it. “If I won Prom King, it would be the highlight of my entire high school career,” said Riley. As the dance got underway, and everyone got into their groups, everyone started what most would call the most memorable night of high school. Everyone was buzz-ing when they began to announce the winners for Prom King and Queen. The

elected Prom Queen for the class of 2012 was Erica Bonthuis, and the King was none other than Riley Scott. Everyone voted, and everyone wanted Riley. His wish came true, and he got the perfect close to his senior year, and a great memory he will surely cherish for the rest of his life. Congratula-tions Riley, you deserve it!

Hornet Water polo Finishes In Third Place

On May sixteenth Enumclaw water polo started their state run. Going into the tournament Enumclaw was undefeated in league play; their only loss was to a club team from Oregon.

Enumclaw started the tournament off by playing lakes high school. Enumclaw had an easy game beating lakes 23-2. Everyone on the team scored at least once in this game. Only few hours later Enumclaw took on the Puyallup Vikings. The girls faced the Vikings only days earlier beating them 19-7.Once again Enumclaw beat the Viking by a large margin this time 23-9.

“I was proud of the endurance our teams showed, especially since we didn’t subs.” Said Hannah Kinniberg.

Winning the two games on Wednesday put the girls up against the number two seed peninsula. Who have lost both games to Enumclaw this year.

It was an easy win for the girls scoring quickly in the first and gaining an eight goal lead going into the half. Enumclaw scored 13 more goals and allowed only two against, making the final score 23-4. Katie Larrea led scoring with 8 goals. Goalie Megan Lesmeister had 15 saves for the game. This win put Enumclaw into to the semifinals against Curtis.

On the fourth day of the State tournament Enumclaw went up against Curtis high school for a spot in the finals. In the first quarter only two goals were scored one to each side. At the end of the second, the game

was tied again three to three. The Vikings only scored one goal in the third quarter putting them ahead by one goal going in to the last quarter. Only 22 seconds into the quarter Enumclaw scored the tying goal. The game was tied until the last second when Enumclaw scored. Officials ruled the shot was not taken before the final buzzer, and the game was sent into overtime. Neither Enumclaw nor Curtis scored in the first period of overtime forcing a second overtime. In the second overtime period Curtis scored the game winning goal.

Enumclaw was set to play league rivals auburn Mountain View for their final game of the season.

Mountainview started the game of by scoring the first three goals. Three minutes into the quarter Katie Larrea on a fast break scored Enumclaw’s first goal. Then Enumclaw answered back with three goals unanswered goals, giving Enumclaw a one goal lead going into the second quarter. In the second quarter both teams scored two goals each putting the making the score, six to five Enumclaw. During the third period Enumclaw ran away with the lead scoring five goals and only allowing one goal. In Enumclaw’s last quarter of the season, Enumclaw’s defense shut down Mountainview’s offense, not letting them score a single goal; Enumclaw scored three goals to extend their lead to 8 goals. The final score was14-6.

Enumclaw finished off their season by taking third place at State with a record of 24 wins and only 2 losses, one to a club team in Oregon and the other in the semifinals against Curtis.

The Enumclaw High School Varsity boys soccer team started off with a bang this past season. During pre-season they won all but two games, one in which they tied. The Hornets won six straight before they were finally beat by number one Decatur. At this time, Austin Walsh held the number one spot on the scoring leaderboards. Throughout the season, Enumclaw fell only to Decatur, Bonney Lake, and Peninsula in penalty kicks. Despite losing to Peninsula, Enumclaw was the only team to beat

them. Senior Jay Williams was on the leaderboard all year with five goals and three assists. Senior Demetri Anderson was also on the Goalkeeping leaderboards with two shutouts. Enumclaw overall had a good year. This was the first time in years they had ten wins, and with only five Seniors leaving the team this year, the squad will come back stron-ger than ever next year. Competing for the title, next year may be the first time Enumclaw wins it in over twenty five years. With the addition of Pete’s Stadium this year, be sure you come out next year to support your boys Enumclaw Hornet soccer team.

Enumclaw goes 5-3 at summer tournament

The first weekend of June was the first step of the Enumclaw men’s basketball team officially reuniting on the court and they took it by swarm. The won their first game in the tournament against one of the Elite 3A teams Capital High School. Sophomore Drake Radamacher scored 16 points and had 8 boards to help his team to a 5 point victory and the third game went on to score 14 straight points for the Hornets “I think you’re going to be seeing some big numbers from me next season,” said Radamacher. With an attitude like that you can tell that confidence will not be a problem for this full veteran team next year as they missed 3rd place by one game and will only be losing two seniors. Perry Rockwood who is a 3 year varsity

point guard for Enumclaw said “I think when we can get everybody on the same page and can work as a team for a full four quarters we will be nearly unstoppable to any of our opponents.” Rockwood had 12 points and 8 assists in the first game. Enumclaw lost their second game to a very fast Washington high school team. The team went on to go 4-2 in the opening tournament and took second overall. Which is really good considering in the championship game point guard Perry Rockwood was absent and 3 year varsity guard Tony Chynoweth had flu-like symptoms. With a full healthy squad this team has the height, speed, dedication and experience to step up next year and make running for the 3A SPSL league title.

Gunderson to lead football program

With the resignation of Don Bartel, a committee was formed who looked hard and fast to find a new coach, and lo and behold we found one. Mark Gunderson will be taking over the reins next year. He has five years teaching experience and seven years coaching experi-ence, including the Kent, Sumner, and the Tukwila school districts. Gunderson has deep roots in Enumclaw. His dad was a coach here and Gunderson was his ball boy. His dad coaching here influenced him greatly and was a big reason for coming. He brings a big football back-ground, from playing running back and outside linebacker in high school, to going to PLU and playing defensive back. A big influence in his life was a coach named Frosty Westering. Westering has a big Football background such as boasting a 305-96-7 record all time, holding a record for most wins in NAIA history, and ranked ninth among all college coaches all time. Westering made many quotes and one that stood out to coach Gunderson was “make every day a great day.” “I live by that quote, and I influence my players to also,” said Gunderson. Coach is bringing a new offense and defense to Enumclaw this year and that is

what we will run. He is running a Power-I offense, and a 52 defense. He would rather bust it up the gut than throw it over some-one, but if given the opportunity he will throw it in. The thing that Gunderson is looking forward to next year is being part of the Enumclaw community, and bringing a high energy, tough-minded philosophy to the team. He expects his players to strive for excellence in the classroom, on the field and in the community.

Tyler Hoffman

About twelve years ago a young boy started playing baseball on the black diamond base-ball field. He was hitting the ball and run-ning the bases, sometimes the wrong way. No one knew that young boy would grow up to be one Enumclaw baseball’s starting outfielders, and number four hitter. That young boy is Tyler Hoffman. Tyler has been playing the game for four-teen years, and still loves it just as much. He played through all middle school and high school, finally getting on varsity his senior year. He considers his senior year a success. He hit number four all year, unless he was battling an injury. The past years Hoffman has battled a num-ber of injuries and came back from them all. His most common injury was a collar bone. He had surgery earlier this year and now has a plate in his shoulder. But it seemed to barely affect him this year on the field.Tyler thinks this year was a pretty success-ful year, with the highlight being his Grand slam at Decatur. His favorite memory of all four years is coming back to see what Coach Tait would do with his hair and facial hair. Another big part of the year was playing this year with longtime friend and teammate Dylan McLauchlin. If Tyler was going to leave one thing behind to the underclassmen it would be” keep ‘got him’ in the program.”Next year Tyler is going to WSU along with teammate Tyler Carlson, unless his sum-mer team can get him on a college team. If Tyler plays as good this summer as he did for school then he will be a for sure college player next year. But for right now he is focused on summer, and living it up for his last time in high school.

Thirty-seven years ago, President Nixon was in office, the hit TV show ‘Wheel of Fortune’ aired its first show and Rob Chris-tensen began his career as a true Enumclaw Junior High School Chieftain. Not only did he serve his time with P.E in the gym or teaching in the classroom, but also coaching on the football turf, baseball diamond and the wrestling mat. Former athlete of his Evan Absolor said “He had advice for you know matter what it was about and always pushed you to be the best athlete you could be, and I will always remember my 8th grade undefeated football season with Coach Christensen.” Memories like that can’t be made without a great coach and mentor and it’s obvious that in Christensen’s career he showed he was nothing then less of either of those. Rob is a man whose life has touched so many others lives, not just while coaching, but as a staff member at Enumclaw Middle School as well. Tiffany Miller who is now an English teacher and activities director at Enumclaw High School said “Mr. Christensen was my advisory teacher in middle school and always had a positive mood and was one of the only teachers that made you want to go to class.” It’s things that made Rob Christensen such a leader and contributor to this tightly-

nit community of Enumclaw. Kevin Nelson a graduating senior this year who is going on to play baseball for Linfield said that “one of my favorite baseball memories was getting to catch the first pitch thrown by Mr. Christensen; it was awesome!”There really is no way to give a single man as much credit as he deserves for such a long, successful and dedicated career. And according to Rick Carel who has worked with Christensen for years “The way he works with every kid is amazing and he knows how to reach out to any of them. He really enjoys what he does.” Someone that can take that much pride in what they do is a true inspiration to all. Tyson Gamblin who eventually went on to play football for Central Washington University said “when I played for Rob, the thing I noticed most was he wasn’t only about making you a better athlete but a becoming a much better character which is really a true reflection of himself because you can see the impact he has made on so many lives.” There is no way to thank somebody enough for this much dedication and contribution to so many individuals and to the community. Rob Christensen has left a legacy that is untouchable and will never be forgotten in this community.

The Enumclaw High School girls fast pitch team had a promising regular season, and decided to carry that into sub districts, and districts to try an earn a spot in the Washington State Tournament. The ladies played their hearts out in districts and earned a spot in state. As the state tourna-ment approached the team worked hard to prepare and gain that “playoff” mentality sports teams always seem to mention. The girls started off the tourna-ment strong with a win over Shadle Park by a score of 5-1.The Hornets advanced to play Everett in game two. “After we won the first game I think the whole team was just relieved be-cause we got it out of the way and came out on top. It was nice to start off with a confi-dence boosting win and go into preparing for the next game with a positive attitude,”

said senior Kenicia McLellan. Unfortunately the girls lost their game against Everett to fall to 1-1 in state by a score of 9-2. It was a double elimina-tion tournament so they had one more game to either win and advance, or lose and have their season cut short. The girls played their next game against Bainbridge in a loser out game. They looked very promising by keeping the lead through most of the game. Sadly, Bainbridge got a second wind, and finished strong with a close win of 6-4 over our Lady Hornets. Although a well-played season came to an end, there is still next year to focus on. The same work ethic and team spirit along with some new players as well will get this team right back to where they were this season, just as capable, only this time a podium finish and State trophy may come along with it.
