Social media has placed thorns in many backsides,

however, the incredible opportunity it has brought far

outweighs the dark side.


There are many things that impact how Google makes the

decision to rank a website and let them appear on the coveted

page one position of their search.

Social media has changed the way we communicate, but it also makes a very significant

impact on search engine optimization.


One of the biggest factors Google considers in ranking

is authority.


There are many considerations when it comes to authority but one really big

one now on the scene is social proof.


How many followers do you have on Facebook and Twitter? How many people are in your circles

on Google +?


But ….here’s the twist….it’s not really about quantity – it’s

about quality.


WHO is following you? How many followers do THEY

have?


Are they popular? If they are that makes them an authority and

guess what – if THEY share your content or link to you on their websites that’s a BIG DEAL.


Google will assume that you’re an authority by

association.


So why is this important?


Google knows that people are more likely to connect with

websites and information that’s recommended by their friends or

people they admire.


This leads to another factor that influences ranking –

popularity.


If your content is being mentioned on websites of people that are an authority Google will

assume you’re popular.


The search engine wants to return data to the searcher

that’s the most popular.


Social Signals and SEO - So how can you improve

your social signals?


First of all, share content that’s interesting to your target market

and perhaps they’ll share it.


Also a good idea is to come up with a list of top people to follow

in your area of expertise and follow them.


Communicate with them on social media by retweeting their content

etc. and perhaps they’ll reciprocate.


Another consideration is to make sure that you’re blogging on a

regular basis and that your content is sharable.


Do you have social icons attached to make it easy for

people? When you write great content make sure you share in

all the right places.


Consider the big picture…..


If more people visit your blog and they subscribe or sign up for your

free offer your list grows.


If your list grows – your business grows.


Start making your social signals stronger! It’s money in the bank!
