The word entrelac comes from the Frenchentrelacer, which means to interlace. Thetechnique is so named because it resembles abasketweave pattern. The basic pattern is madeup of triangles and rectangles that look likeslightly elongated diamonds and is usuallyworked in stockinette stitch. Althoughentrelac may look tricky, all you need toknow for the basic technique is how tocast on, knit, purl, pick up stitches, increase and decrease. However, entrelac can be worked in almostany stitch or color pattern.I first became interested in

entrelac in the 1970s when I wasasked by a yarn company to teach an

entrelac class. Recently, after a conversationwith another designer about entrelac, I beganto think about how much potential there is inthis technique. I started to explore thepossibilities of entrelac and am thrilled to beable to share what I have learned in this book.To make it as easy as possible, I begin with

step-by-step photos and instructions for thebasic entrelac technique as well as knittingentrelac in the round and knitting a triangle. The next section is a stitch dictionary with

more than 65 patterns. I´ve included a little bitof everything, from lace to cables to colorworkdesigns to beaded and embroidered patterns.More than 25 complete patterns for

sweaters, scarves, wraps, blankets, baby knitsand other projects explore the myriadpossibilities of incorporating entrelac intodesign. Finally, for adventurous knitters, I sharesome tips for designing with entrelac.I hope you have as much fun discovering

this fascinating technique as I have hadsharing it with you.

5. Work the third triangle as you did thefirst and second. Turn. You may thinkyou have done something wrong, but thisis how it should look—3 triangles thatare attached to one another and curlup at the tips. The Base Trianglesare now complete.

4. Work the second triangle as you did thefirst. Do not turn. You are now ready tostart the third base triangle.

3. Turn the work again and k5 on the rightside (shown here). Continue in this way, working 1 more stitch every wrong-side rowuntil 8 purl stitches have been worked. Donot turn. You are now ready to work asecond triangle.

2. To work the first Base Triangle, purl 2 stson the wrong side of the work. Turn to theright side and k2, turn, p3, turn, k3, turn, p4,turn, k4, turn, p5 (shown here).

1. Using the method of your choice, caston 24 stitches. You will be creating 3 BaseTriangles, each 8 stitches wide. Placemarkers at every 8-stitch interval to helpdistinguish each triangle.

In this example, you will learn how to create an entrelac swatch that consists of five rows of stockinette-stitchtriangles and rectangles. This is the most basic entrelac pattern, and it serves as the starting point for all of the entrelac

patterns in this book. (See page 19 for complete written instructions.) Once you get the hang of it, you will beready to tackle the other patterns and the projects. To make it easier to distinguish between sections,

you can use two different colors of yarn as I have done here.

Basic Patternspage 19This section demonstrates theamazing range of patterns youcan create with just knit andpurl stitches.

Lace Stitchespage 29Even the simplest lace patternsadd incredible complexity toentrelac. Try them in differentyarns for varied effects.

Relief Designspage 44Bobbles and other texturedstitches make these patternsreally stand out! Use them asaccents in your designs so theydon´t overpower.

Cable Patternspage 40Like lace, cables are an easy wayto put entrelac patterns overthe top. Any of the onesfeatured here would make abeautiful design focal point.

Geometricspage 50Entrelac gets graphic when youchange the colors of thetriangles and rectangles. Usethe grid on page 154 to comeup with your own designs.

Colorworkpage 56For even more subtle andcomplex color effects, you canknit the individual rectangles instripes or Fair Isle patterns.

Mélangespage 62Here we´ve mixed together anumber of techniques andmaterials—felting, noveltyyarns, beads and more.

Embroiderypage 70Embroidery can add a beautifultouch to entrelac in a numberof ways: Use it to outline therectangles or as accents incenters or at the intersections.

If you´ve never worked in entrelac, first practice the basic Stockinette Stitch sample on the opposite page.Once you feel comfortable with the technique, you can try some of the different pattern stitches. When

working a cable, lace or other pattern you´re not familiar with, first practice just the stitch, then try it in theentrelac pattern. All of the patterns give easy-to-follow directions, so go ahead and knit a few!
