From May to August Direct sunlight should be allowed inside the building to warm exposed walls andfloor.

The rest of the year it is best to block out direct sunlight so that the building does not heat up when it is already warm outside.

RAINFALL IN JOHANNESBURG Thesechartsdescribewhattimesofyearthesitewillrecieveitsrain.Itisimportanttonoticethat most of the rainfall comes during the summer, opposedtoitbeingevenlyspreadalongthedurationof the year.

If the new community center intends to capturewaterforlateruse, thisunevendistributionmust be accounted for with larger water tanks that will allow for maximum capture during the summer, so that there will be enough water saved for the winter months.

SOLAR ALTITUDE FLUXUATION Shading devices in Johannesburg work most efficientlywhentheyblockthesunfromseptemberthroughApril.Thisisduetothealtitudeofthesuninthe sky being higher in the summer than it is during thewinter.Itisbecausethesun’sfluxuationofaltitudethroughtheyearthatprovidesthepossibility of solar heat gain during the winter and shading during the summer.

The key to the success of this aspect of passivedesignispin-pointingtheswitch-dateandangle, that is the date at which the building switches from summer mode to winter mode.

Possible Passive Strategies: -SOLAR HEATING -EVAPORATIVE COOLING -STACK VENTILATION

By giving space to the public realm at the major corner of the site, the community center will becomemoreengauging, inviting, andaparenttooutsiders. Let the lively youth of eNtokozweni be celebrated by both community members and people on the street.

SECTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN PASSIVE DESIGN

27

A large part of the new community center is the gym. Such a prominent piece of the whole deserves prominent placement on the site. Showninthissectionisthegymopeningupto both, the interior courtyard and the new public square at London and 13th.

Themostrecentplansrefinepreviousexplorations.Theyalsodealwiththetopographicalchange from the north-west corner, down, to the south-east.

These plans accurately describe the dichotomy of the eastern side of the site as being the side where the center is celebrated and shared, and the western side, where the community center makes money from acybercafe’inthefront, offofLondonroad, andeducates the youth on the interior of the center.

Withoutanevenbalanceofthepromotionofthe community center and the public use of a cyber cafe’ to make money, the community center will not beabletofunctionoveralongperiodofftime.

The Summer Courtyard opens up to the east, allowing morning light to warm the space during the winter. The center itself blocks all evening light which will keep the center cool during the summer, whilealsoallowingambientlighttoinfiltratetheinterior. Fixed steel louvers, infront of north facing glass, blocks summer light and lets winter light through to the interior.

ProgramaticallythisistheheartofeNtokozweni. It will be a mostly private zone where adults can run the center and youth can educate themselves with a library, computer labs and classrooms.
