KAOR-FM Station Information

KAOR is a non-commercial radio station on the University of South Dakota (USD) Campus. The station’s signal is located at 91.1 on the FM radio dial.

Non-Commercial Radio: Licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), KAOR is classified as a non-commercial, educational station. This means we are unable to conduct contests or broadcast traditional advertisements. However, like public radio and television stations, we do accept underwriting for both general and specific programming.

Broadcast Area: Our signal reaches the entire USD campus and community of Vermillion, with some coverage in rural Clay and Union counties. The station has been on the air since 1985.

Audience: KAOR’s listeners are as eclectic as its programming and includes students and faculty on the USD campus as well as residents of the Vermillion community and surrounding areas. In addition, KAOR is played on KYOT when Coyote News is not broadcasting. Based on recent census and enrollment data, KAOR has a potential audience of more than 20,000 listeners.

Programming: KAOR offers an eclectic mix of music, talk, news, and sports programs. Students determine the content of the programs that they produce and/or host, working with a broadcast promotional clock. Music ranges from current popular music to alternative bands, and from classic rock to traditional and contemporary country.

Management: KAOR is managed and operated by students, with support and advising provided by a broadcast engineer and a faculty member within the Media & Journalism program on the USD campus.

Hours of Operation: KAOR is on the air 24 hours a day throughout the calendar year.

Social Media: KAOR has a presence on both Facebook and Twitter. Individual programs broadcast on the station may also have Facebook,

KAOR-FM BENEFITS TO UNDERWRITING

The benefits to underwriting are very similar to traditional advertising. There are some fundamental differences between the two, however. Because of FCC rulings for non-commercial radio stations, KAOR cannot make calls to action, discuss financial details, or compare businesses/products in its promotions. However, there is still plenty that can be gained from underwriting with KAOR. Awareness of your brand/product/business is the obvious benefit. It is difficult to sell products if people don’t realize you are there, and KAOR would be extremely happy to assist you in that regard. In addition, KAOR’s underwriting rates are generally lower than the vast majority of other media options, in some cases significantly lower. Finally, by getting underwriting now, your business gains priority with renewals in the future. With renewals, the rates currently quoted will not change; if, for example, the package you select is $100 right now and you opt to renew for another semester with that same package, your price will remain the same regardless of any changes to the rates. Put another way, prices agreed to are grandfathered in.

The underwriting agreement allows for a mutually beneficial arrangement because KAOR listeners are your target market and your support benefits the students in the station. We want to get you to your demographic(s). In fact, I hope every time your promotion airs on our station, 50 people run to your business. I cannot guarantee that would

happen, but the potential is there. Your underwriting not only benefits your organization, but you are also providing support for the station and its operations. The student staff at KAOR is unpaid, and as such underwriting investment will not be used to pay someone’s salary.

I recognize the informality to this proposal, but I just want to point out how important this is to us. Thank you for your consideration, and I would be glad to discuss any questions/concerns you have.

Sincerely,Joshua Ryan Earl
