enterprise social networking, cox enterprises: living the case study
DESCRIPTION
Cox Enterprises (CEI) is one of the nation's leading media companies and providers of automotive services, so what are they doing about social media and the emerging forms of collaborative computing? This month, we will gain insight from Cox Enterprise’s experience with enterprise social networking technology and how it has been deployed in support of their large, highly decentralized employee population. The talk will explore how this technology has been use to support employee collaboration and engagement, and as a means to encourage and support innovation. The speaker will explore drivers, goals, lessons learned and future directions, as well as providing opportunities for Q & A.TRANSCRIPT

Information Technology at Cox (circa 2008)
Multiple acquisitions of foundational portal technology(Plumtree to BEA to Oracle) had cast doubt on technology direction
Cox leadership desired creation of central philosophies for Cox companies, cross divisional programs and messaging
Emerging Web 2.0 / Enterprise 2.0 technology offered intriguing potential for company

Roadmap Drivers – Business Need“How can I share information and collaborate
better with people in the divisions and my remote teams?”
“I need capabilities to share information that IT can’t provide today”
“I need to reduce risk and improve the efficiency for managing employees coming on board and exiting the company”
“I need better ways to manage common information that multiple departments need, such Cox location information”
“It takes too long to get information on to InSite and we have little in the way of self service”
“I need to deliver training, best practices and support for the development of communities across the divisions”
99
Roadmap Drivers – “Generation V”
• Unlike previous generations (“Baby Boomers”, “GenX”), the members of Generation V are not defined by age, gender, social demographics or geography.
• They have a preference for the use of digital media channels.
• They believe in active participation in global communities — a conversation rather than a communication.
• They strongly believe in the benefits of collaboration — that "we" is more powerful than "me.“

Collaboration Platform• Many authors, fewer consumers• Democratized content management
and authoring• Need to support communities of users,
often workgroups or vertical communities within Cox
• Need ability for individuals to personalize their interface, self-elect collaboration communities to join – “Pull”

I was thinking of doing posters on ridesharing for our building.
Has anyone had success??
We did some posters on ridesharing last month and
found them to work really well.
Our success was mixed. We only got a small number of
responses.
Thanks! It’s good to know someone has tried it and had
some success.
Go check out the Document Library, I uploaded the PDFs we
used and our Project Plans.

Company culture and technology have to be aligned and stay aligned
Know your audience
Don’t try to be all things to all people

Turn ideas into action, innovation into business value
