Why not use Skype conferencing/telephony services directly?
Take the best; leave the rest?
Skype is a peer-to-peer application installed on each user’s PC.
Skype uses TCP ports 80 and 443, making it hard to control with firewalls.
Any PC can be transformed into a Skype supernode.• Could the high-bandwidth, corporate network be stolen by Skype?
• Can be protected but requires registry modifications that may be overwritten by updates.
Lack of key corporate features: emergency call, recording, call barring,
and so on
Is it secure? Can it be adequately monitored? Can it be fully controlled?
Use the Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype Solution.

Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype Solution
Frequently asked questions (1/3)
1. Is the Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype Solution commercially available today? Yes, for the Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype-S30/60. The appliance Gateways for
Skype are under development and will be available beginning of 2010.
2. Is the large Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype-S30/60 available for non-Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise CS systems?
No. The solution takes advantage of the extensible SIP capability of the OmniPCX Enterprise CS. The service package includes enablement, “knowledge transfer” and support, which Alcatel-Lucent cannot provide on another vendor’s platform.

Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype Solution
Frequently asked questions (2/3)
3. What level of certification is required by a Business Partner to sell the solution? Premium Business Partners can provide this solution, with no specific solution
certification required because the Alcatel-Lucent service package is mandatory.
4. Is Skype a reliable network? There is no Skype SLA, but the PSTN network is still available if problems arise.
When used with the Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise CS, you benefit from all of the enhanced OmniPCX Enterprise CS features and mechanisms to secure communications, such as ARS and PSTN overflow. It is not recommended to replace 100 percent of PSTN interfaces at small branch offices with the appliance Gateway for Skype.
5. Is Skype a security risk in my network?
This point raises a lot of questions. The Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype Solution is an ideal way to avoid installing Skype software inside the enterprise — as the gateway sites in the DMZ — while realizing all the advantages of the Skype network for voice transport.

Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype Solution
Frequently asked questions (3/3)
6. Is Skype really less expensive than other operators?
This depends on the destination. Please refer to the Skype rates table: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/prices/callrates/#allRatesTab
For many destinations, prices are lower. The Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype Solution can leverage the OmniPCX Enterprise CS ARS to select the cheapest route, whether that is Skype’s or another operator’s. An ROI of a few months can be demonstrated by combining the Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype with the OmniPCX Enterprise CS and OmniTouch 8660 My Teamwork. See customer cases in this presentation.
7. How do you position the Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype Solution against Skype for SIP?
Please see the dedicated slide in this presentation.

General design considerations (1/2)
General considerations
1. Alcatel-Lucent will not provide support for solutions that include the Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype series without at least one Gateway for Skype-S30 or S60.
2. At least one Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype-S30 or S60 is required for the Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype-MGR unified management server (under development).
3. All Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype trunk interfaces must be associated with Skype user accounts, managed using the Skype Business Control Panel.
4. Skype rate tables must be manually entered and updated because they are not typically offered with summarized ARS table solutions.
KTS/PBX trunking rules
1. Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype Solutions are not to be used as a 100-percent replacement for standard PSTN connectivity. Emergency call handling (911/112) must use traditional interfaces.
2. Use of Skype voice mail, video, SMS and other advanced feature options is not recommended for Skype accounts associated with Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype products.

General design considerations (2/2)
Skype video and conferencing
HD conference-room camera systems from LifeSize® can support both Skype video and standards-based SIP/H.323 connections, but not at the same time.
Security
It is recommended that all Alcatel-Lucent Gateway for Skype and management servers sit in DMZ network locations. XML application-enablement servers should reside either in the DMZ or in an internal network segment.

It is recommended that e-mail addresses be created for each “group”, with aliases created for each individual Skype account.
