Sivantos presents the complete binax platform at BSHAA 2015

At this year’s annual BSHAA conference, Sivantos (formerly Siemens Hearing Instruments) introduced the rest of the Siemens binax platform in the form of custom and BTE aids.

Over the two day conference, Sivantos was delighted to welcome a large number of delegates to its stand who were keen to find out more about the new products, which includes yet another world’s first: binaural OneMic directionality which delivers the first adaptive directional system in a CIC with one microphone.

All Insio binax models can be remotely controlled via the Siemens touchControl™ App for smartphones. Audio streaming is available via easyTek and the easyTek App with a smartphone. Insio is available in 7bx, 5bx, and 3bx technology levels.

The new Motion binax BTE family offers rechargeability, a new housing on the Motion SX and full binaural features.

A steady stream of delegates sampled the range of binax features and benefits with the popular demonstration head. As well as the impressive narrow directionality customers heard the new tinnitus Ocean Waves therapy signals; a solution designed to provide added flexibility when managing tinnitus.

Mark Laben, UK Product and Marketing Manager at Sivantos, said: “I was very pleased with the interest shown in our stand, demonstrations and products at this year’s BSHAA. We were able to reach out to customers who were unable to attend our first launch of the RIC products in January. It’s great to see how impressed customers are after they have listened to binax!”

4RHINO a new rhinomanometer

The 4RHINO system is a diagnostic device for rhinological functional diagnostics based on four-phase rhinomanometry. The intended use of the device is to deliver functional parameters in the course of a complete rhinological diagnostic examination.

Four-phase rhinomanometry is a major technical advancement based on classical rhinomanometry. The four-phase technology employs digital computer-assisted measurement techniques. In contrast to other rhinometry devices, which generate a single average value, the 4RHINO system creates a realistic representation of the full breathing cycle in over 3,000 individual measurements. Thanks to modern digital sensors the measurements are faster and more precise. In this way 4RHINO offers a valid measurement instead of a rough approximation.

Sutter launched this new four-phase rhinomanometer at the German ENT congress and at the third congress of ORL-HNS in Prague.

Report reaffirms dangers of recreational noise exposure

A recent report published alongside Noise Action Week by The Tinnitus Clinic revealed just one visit to a nightclub playing loud music could permanently damage a person’s hearing.

Noise levels recorded inside night clubs and bars showed readings reaching 85-100 decibels, well above the recommended safe level of 84 decibels. The WHO recently claimed 1.1 billion 12 to 35-year-olds are at risk of developing noise induced hearing loss due to recreational noise.

Josephine Swinhoe, Director of The Tinnitus Clinic Ltd, said: “We all enjoy going to nightclubs, however, people should be aware of the damage they could do and take some steps to protect themselves.” Revellers could apply simple tests to see if they should take a break from the noise. If speech cannot be heard from someone a meter away this could be a sign of a damagingly loud environment. Autifony therapeutics clinical study on new tinnitus treatment – recruitment to continue until the end of August

Autifony Therapeutics is developing its lead compound AUT00063 for treatment of tinnitus and age-related hearing loss. The company recently initiated a Phase IIa ‘proof of concept’ clinical trial in tinnitus subjects called the QUIET-1 study (QUest In Eliminating Tinnitus). This will be conducted in around 15 key hospital sites across the UK. Professor Jaydip Ray, ENT Surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Sheffield Children’s Hospital, is national Coordinating Investigator, with Professor Deborah Hall at The University of Nottingham and National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit (BRU) as lead academic collaborator. The study is co-funded by a substantial award from the UK government-backed Biomedical Catalyst, and will be recruiting participants until the end of August 2015.

In a completed Phase I study to explore safety and pharmacokinetics, AUT00063 showed an excellent safety and tolerability profile, and the results confirmed once daily oral dosing. The QUIET-1 study will focus in particular on tinnitus associated with hearing loss following noise exposure or ageing, in people who have suffered from tinnitus for between six and 18 months. Subjects will undergo four weeks of once daily dosing.

If the initial trial for tinnitus is successful, then further clinical trials will be carried out with people suffering from different kinds of tinnitus, so people at present not deemed eligible to participate in the QUIET-1 study, such as those with longer term tinnitus, may be able to join a later study.

AUT00063 is now also being tested for the treatment of age-related hearing loss in a clinical trial in the US.

See Autifony Therapeutics’ website (www.autifony.com) for more information. For specific queries about participating in the tinnitus clinical trial, contact the nearest hospital site. For further information contact: Autifony Theraputics www.autifony.com

New Bristol tinnitus clinic gives hope to 40,000 people

The UK’s leading tinnitus rehabilitation clinic is bringing fresh hope to over 40,000 individuals severely impacted by the condition in the South West region.

The British Tinnitus Association reports that mild tinnitus is a common condition with about 10 per cent of the adult population experiencing it all the time, often severely affecting the quality of life of many. Josephine Swinhoe, Managing Director of The Tinnitus Clinic said: “We estimate that there are over 40,000 adults living with severe tinnitus or ‘ringing in the ears’ in the South West who are now within reach of our new Bristol clinic and our evidence based services.”

Local Bristol businessman, Mr Robert Stanley— who was treated at The Tinnitus Clinic in Cheltenham with Neuromodulation treatment for tonal tinnitus said: “I was finding it extremely difficult to function. It happened so suddenly, there didn’t seem to be anything that I had done to trigger it. I started to wear the Acoustic CR® Neuromodulation device at the recommended four to six hours a day and it became apparent how easy and simple it was to wear.”

“Now when I get up in the morning the tinnitus is in the background and I am rarely aware of it during the day,” Mr Stanley added. The Tinnitus Clinic first opened on London’s famous Harley Street in 2011, and has since treated over 2,000 patients in its seven clinics across the UK. The clinics provide adults with assessment and treatment for tinnitus, hyperacusis, hearing loss and hearing protection.

Products by the VARTA Micro Group at the GreenTec Awards Gala in Berlin

A large number of stars provided plenty of entertainment on the green carpet and on the stage at the GreenTec Awards Gala, which took place this year in the Tempodrom in Berlin on 29 May 2015. The group The BossHoss, singer Nena, Fahrenhaidt, Désirée Nosbusch and Dr Wladimir Klitschko – just to mention a few – used all their energy to heat up the Gala for Europe’s coveted environmental award.

The unique engion family storage unit by VARTA Storage GmbH was also seen on stage and live. The engion storage device, which stores the

‘green energy’ of the sun using a photovoltaic system, supplied the stage with electricity and thus, in its own way, provided plenty of energy, with Annemarie Carpendale and Matthias Killing as hosts for the evening.

VARTA Micro Group presented further highlights from its range of products on its exhibition stand at the Gala, for example power one premium hearing aid batteries. These mercury-free Zinc Air batteries are made sustainably and on an environmentally sound basis in Germany on the latest fully automatic production lines in the world’s largest and most modern factory for hearing aid batteries.

VARTA Lithium-Ion CoinPower batteries, which function without lead, mercury or cadmium, are small and enormously powerful. They make new form factors possible for wearable technologies, for example, wireless headsets.

With Europe’s largest environmental award gala in mind, Herbert Schein, CEO of the Group, states: “The VARTA Micro Group stands for the future of energy, which we emphasised at the GreenTec Awards, as we have done for the last few years.”

New MDHearingAid FIT delivers unique ITE design for active adults

With a patented ITE form factor that doesn’t block the ear canal, the new MDHearingAid® FIT offers critical comfort advantages along with advanced digital technology for a fraction of the cost of conventional hearing aids. It is the latest low-cost, high-quality hearing instrument developed by MDHearingAid®, the only direct-to-consumer hearing aid company with products designed by a practising otolaryngologist.

Designed for adults in their 50s and 60s, the FIT sits comfortably and securely in the concha of the ear, allowing the natural air and sound movement conducive to an active lifestyle. This revolutionary aid is the first hearing aid that leaves the ear canal open with no behind-the-ear wires or tubes. Sound amplification is provided by the company’s proprietary MDSound™ algorithm, which has received high marks from both industry and consumer reviewers for its ability to enhance speech recognition.

The FIT also includes volume control, four programs, fifth-generation feedback cancellation, advanced compression technology, and extended frequency layered noise reduction not typically found on direct-to-consumer hearing aids.

“Many people in their 50s and 60s resist hearing aids, not only for the usual cost reasons, but also because of a perceived discomfort and distaste for the traditional BTE design,” said Dr Sreek Cherukuri, the company’s founder and an otolaryngologist. “The FIT addresses both issues in an affordable solution and a wearable form factor that resembles musicians’ in-ear monitors.”

The FIT is FDA-registered, designed for mild to moderately-severe hearing loss, and ready to wear out of the box. It costs $549.99 apiece or $999.99 a pair, comes with free one-on-one phone support from hearing aid specialists and audiologists, and carries a 45-day risk free trial with a money back guarantee.

Octiv Power Portfolio

The Octiv family from Sivantos (formerly Siemens Hearing Instruments) includes a complete power portfolio so audiologists can fit severe to profound hearing losses, with even more discreet instruments.

Octiv HP/HP+, Octiv SP+ and Octiv R+ provide maximum power (Octiv SP+ 85dB/144dB SPL) with a great sound and listening comfort for the patient. Octiv power products are fast becoming the power products of choice for many NHS Audiology departments.

GRAS launches sound power solution

Sound power measurements are increasingly becoming a requirement in a lot of indus-tries. In the automotive world, suppliers have to specify sound power levels for the parts emitting noise. Computer manufacturers are pushing the envelope for quiet products and calling upon their fan, hard disk, component suppliers to deliver even acoustically discrete products.

Moreover, in the white goods industry sound power is becoming increasingly popular, and ‘silent’ products have become a trademark of high end, high quality products.

Noting these trends, GRAS combined years of experience in customer driven innovation with 20 years of experience developing the most robust and reliable microphones to produce an off-the-shelf solution, with all the benefits of a modern dedicated system.

Until now there was no commercially available structures on the market that would suit the needs of these customers – GRAS has, with the introduction of the 1m and 2m radius products, introduced a structure which answers a lot of the questions raised by older or tripod based solutions:• Offering easy access to the test area, for

quicker turnaround between tests by virtue of the rigid design. Leaving out one side of the hemisphere doesn’t weaken the structure.

• Ensuring very high repeatability by always having equal and precise distance to the centre of the structure.

• Trusted data due to negligible reflections from the structure.

• Colour coded microphone positions for added simplicity and flexibility.

• Set up time of less than 30 minutes.• Optional flight case for portable systems –

ideal for onsite consultancies. The system caters to GRAS’ world

renowned microphones – either standard half inch free field microphones or low noise 40HL microphones – ensuring that whatever noise level the user is interested in capturing, GRAS can provide the appropriate solution.

The synergy of GRAS’ sound power solution and ViAcoustics Trident software is unparalleled and, for the first time, engineers can get a dedicated and affordable system, which will deliver reliable and trusted data every time.
