![Page 18: ENSC-833 Wireless Ethernet Performance](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051813/6282df786df82e22cd1ca9e7/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
WLAN 2: Complex Network (cont’d)
z Simulation results at wkstn22
(the most congested source)
z Analysis: Up to 20 retransmission attempts are observed.
![Page 19: ENSC-833 Wireless Ethernet Performance](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051813/6282df786df82e22cd1ca9e7/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
WLAN 2: Complex Network (cont’d)
z Simulation results at wkstn21 (destination)
z Analysis:- sending acks due to higher layers (TCP)- large backoff slots as it’s competing with wsktn22 & local AP
![Page 20: ENSC-833 Wireless Ethernet Performance](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051813/6282df786df82e22cd1ca9e7/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
WLAN 3: MAC Variations
z Want to change the backoff mechanisms and see performance difference
z OPNET WLAN MAC does binary exponential backoff(double backoff window every time)
z Changed MAC to:1. Linear backoff (backoff window grows by 16)2. Exponential distribution for backoff time selection 3. Change to a p-persistent variant
![Page 21: ENSC-833 Wireless Ethernet Performance](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051813/6282df786df82e22cd1ca9e7/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
WLAN 3: MAC Variations (cont’d)
z Linear backoff (backoff window grows by 16)z No significant change seen
![Page 22: ENSC-833 Wireless Ethernet Performance](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051813/6282df786df82e22cd1ca9e7/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
WLAN 3: MAC Variations (cont’d)
z Exponential distribution; mean = 10*backoff_win_size z Less retransmissions seen with higher exp. distrib. mean
![Page 23: ENSC-833 Wireless Ethernet Performance](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051813/6282df786df82e22cd1ca9e7/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
WLAN 3: MAC Variations (cont’d)
z p-persistent MAC? What is it?
y Station still defer while medium is busyy When medium is free station transmits with
probability p and defers with probability (1-p)y Repeated in next backoff slot
z To Do
![Page 24: ENSC-833 Wireless Ethernet Performance](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051813/6282df786df82e22cd1ca9e7/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Project Difficulties
z Unstable development environment, caused by OPNET, models, or hardware issues. Encountered a lot of tool crashes.
z Insufficient documentation. A lot of time spent learning about & working around the models, only to find easy solution much later.
![Page 25: ENSC-833 Wireless Ethernet Performance](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051813/6282df786df82e22cd1ca9e7/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Conclusions & Future Works
z WLAN models in OPNET work but does not allow for analysis of PHY
z Models TCP/IP layers are preventing the excessive congestion we want in the network
z Can tune the backoff selection algorithm based on network conditions
z More comprehensive simulationsz Investigate effect of roamingz Investigate effect of different data traffic
