The goal in creating Passport to Adventure Club was to off er a program that embraces diversity.

An environment that celebrates diff erences can help children appreciate the richness of our world. If we want our children to learn how to interact with a variety of people and have respect for other cultures, we need to teach and encourage respect and appreciation of this country’s cultural mosaic.

Our program combines a variety of enrichment activities that may include karate, dance, music and gymnastics.** The integration of technology, sports, science, art and cultural related projects gives every child fun and exciting activities to look forward to in their afternoon.

We also include homework assistance and a great snack!

Policy StatementPraise and positive reinforcement are eff ective methods of behavior management of children. When children receive positive, nonviolent, and understanding interactions from adults and others, they develop good self-concepts, problem solving abilities, and self-discipline. Based on this belief, Big Blue Marble Academy uses a positive approach to discipline and practices the following discipline and behavior management techniques.

WE DO Communicate to children using positive statements. Communicate with children on their level. Talk with children in a calm quiet manner. Explain unacceptable behavior to children. Give attention to children for positive behavior. Praise and encourage the children. Reason with and set limits for the children. Apply rules consistently. Model appropriate behavior. Set up the classroom environment to prevent problems. Provide alternatives and redirect children to acceptable activity. Give children opportunities to make choices and solve problems. Help children talk out problems and think of solutions. Listen to children and respect the children’s needs, desires and feelings. Provide appropriate words to help solve confl icts. Use storybooks and discussion to work through common confl icts.

WE DO NOT Infl ict corporal punishment in any manner upon a child. (Corporal punishment is defi ned as the use of physical force to the

body as a discipline measure. Physical force to the body includes, but is not limited to, spanking, hitting, shaking, biting, pinching, pushing, pulling, or slapping.) And ask that anyone on premises refrains from the same.

Use any strategy that hurts, shames, or belittles a child. Use any strategy that threatens, intimidates, or forces a child. Use food as a form of reward or punishment. Use or withhold physical activity as a punishment. Shame or punish a child if a bathroom accident occurs. Embarrass any child in front of others. Compare children. Place children in a locked and/or dark room. Leave any child alone, unattended or without supervision. Allow discipline of a child by other children. Criticize, make fun of, or otherwise belittle a child’s parents, families, or ethnic groups.

Conferences will be scheduled with parents if particular disciplinary problems occur. If a child’s behavior consistently endangers the safety of the children around him/her, then the Director has the right, after meeting with the parents, implementing strategies to improve behavior, and documenting behavior problems and interventions, to terminate or suspend child care services for that particular child. Parents will be given a written one-week notifi cation of termination, however immediate termination could occur if Big Blue Marble Academy staff feel it cannot maintain the safety and well-being of the child, other children or BBMA staff .

Note: If, at any point, there is an indication/suspicion that a child may have special needs, Big Blue Marble Academy will inform the child’s family and make contact with Baby Net for assessment and assistance.

DISCIPLINE POLICY

Policy Statement Good nutrition is vital to children’s overall development and well-being. In an eff ort to provide the best possible nutrition environment for the children in our facility, Big Blue Marble Academy has developed the following child care nutrition policies to encourage the development of good eating habits that will last a lifetime.

Child Care Nutrition Big Blue Marble Academy follows the child care nutrition guidelines recommended by the USDA CACFP (Child and Adult Care Food Program) for all the foods we serve. To provide a healthy and balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and limits foods and beverages that are high in sugar, and/or fat, our nutrition policy includes the following:

Fruits and Vegetables We serve fruit at least 2 times a day. We off er a vegetable other than white potatoes at least once a day.

Grains We serve whole grain foods at least once a day.

Beverages We limit juice intake to once per day in a serving size specifi ed for the child’s age group. When served, the juice is 100% fruit

juice. We do not serve sugar sweetened beverages. We serve only skim or 1% milk to children age 2 years and older.

Fats and Sugars High fat meats, such as bologna, bacon, and sausage, are served no more than two times per week. Fried or pre-fried vegetables, including potatoes, are served no more than once per week. We limit sweet food items to no more than two times per week.

Role of Staff in Nutrition Education Staff provides opportunities for children to learn about nutrition 1 time per week or more. Staff acts as role models for healthy eating in front of the children.

Meal and snack times are planned so that no child will go more than four hours without being off ered food. We provide a variety of nutritionally balanced, high quality foods each day so please do not send your child with outside food and drinks.

All meals that are provided for fi eld trips will be provided by Big Blue Marble Academy. No outside foods may be brought into the center without a doctor’s note or the director’s permission.

Weekly Menus Our weekly menus are carefully planned to follow child care nutrition guidelines at every meal. Each menu is designed to provide a wide variety of nutritious foods that are diff erent in color, shape, size and texture. All of our child care menus include foods that are culturally diverse and seasonally appropriate. We also like to introduce new and diff erent foods and include children’s favorite recipes in our menu planning. Menus are rotated on a 6 week basis to provide the children with a balance of variety and familiarity. Menus are adapted to incorporate local and fresh in-season produce when available.

Nutrition and Punishment Staff will never use food as a reward or as a punishment.

Celebrations From birthday parties to holidays there are many opportunities for celebrations in our child care center. Please be sure to discuss the food items that you would like to bring prior to the party with the center director. For holiday celebrations, a sign-up sheet with specifi c foods and beverages will be placed on the classroom door.

Professional Development Annual nutrition training is required to ensure that all staff understands the important role nutrition plays in the overall well-being of children.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY POLICY

Policy Statement Big Blue Marble Academy recognizes the importance of physical activity for young children. Implementation of appropriate physical activity practices supports the health and development of children in care, as well as assisting in establishing positive lifestyle habits for the future.

Physical Activity in Child Care The purpose of this policy is to ensure that children in care are supported and encouraged to engage in active play, develop fundamental movement skills and to have limited screen time. Our center encourages all children to participate in a variety of daily physical activity opportunities that are appropriate for their age, that are fun and that off er variety. In order to promote physical activity and provide all children with numerous opportunities for physical activity throughout the day Big Blue Marble Academy will:

Daily Outdoor Play Encourage a least restrictive, safe environment for infants and toddlers at all times. Provide a designated safe outdoor area for infants (ages 0-12 months) for daily outdoor play. Provide toddlers (ages 1 through 2 year olds) with at least 60-90 minutes of daily outdoor active play opportunities across 2

or 3 separate occasions. Provide preschoolers and school age children (ages 3 through 12 year olds) with at least 90-120 minutes of daily outdoor active

play opportunities across 2 or 3 separate occasions. Increase indoor active play time so the total amount of active play time remains the same, if weather limits outdoor time. Provide a variety of play materials (both indoors and outdoors) that promote physical activity.

Role of Staff in Physical ActivityWill encourage children to be physically active indoors and outdoors at appropriate times. Will provide 5-10 minutes of planned physical activities at least 2 times daily for children age 3 and older.

Screen Time LimitationsNot permit screen time (e.g., television, movies, video games and computers) for infants and children two years and younger.

Physical Activity and Punishment Staff members do not withhold opportunities for physical activity (e.g., not being permitted to play with the rest of the class or being kept from play time), except when a child’s behavior is dangerous to himself or others. Staff members never use physical activity or exercise as punishment, e.g., doing push-ups or running laps. Play time or other opportunities for physical activity are never withheld to enforce the completion of learning activities or academic work. Our center uses appropriate alternate strategies as consequences for negative or undesirable behaviors.

Appropriate Dress for Physical Activity We at Big Blue Marble Academy have a Ready to Play Policy! Please bring your child ready to play and have fun each day. Your child will participate in both indoor play and outdoor play. Therefore, play clothes and shoes which can get dirty and allow for free and safe movement are most appropriate. We expect parents to provide children with appropriate clothing for safe and active outdoor play during all seasons.

For safety, children cannot wear open-toe shoes, sandals or fl ip-fl ops. In winter, provide a warm jacket, snowsuit, hat, mittens and boots. In spring and fall, provide a jacket or sweater, and boots and rain jacket on rainy days. In summer, provide light clothing, swimsuit, towel, hat and sunscreen. Please label all outer garments with your child’s name!

It is our expectation that children will go outside EVERYDAYl We will monitor the weather temperatures and heat index to ensure that appropriate time frames are adhered to and we then proceed to have indoor large muscle time if need be. If you feel your child is too sick to go outside then he/she is too sick to be at the child care center. We request that you keep him/her at home until they are well enough to go outside.

Professional Development Annual training on promotion of children’s movement and physical activity is required for all staff .

POLICY AND PROCEDURESWelcome! At Passport to Adventure Club (PAC) you can expect a safe, productive learning environment. Our teachers are trained and dedicated to helping children develop the skills to prepare your child for global citizenship.

These policies and procedures serve as your guide to our program to help you understand the operations and goals of PAC. It is considered part of the contractual agreement between the parent and PAC. You may also receive additional information in your enrollment materials that further describe your local school’s policies.

We reserve the right to modify these policies and procedures at any time to comply with state regulations or company directives.

Mission Statement As a Passport To Adventure Club team, we understand the importance of cross-cultural communication. We know that when children come to understand another culture through new languages rather than only their own, the experience is richer and more profound. We introduce and teach young children another culture and language in an immersion setting and strive to teach children to understand and ultimately speak a new language.

General Operating Procedures Enrollment We serve children ages 5-12 years old (Kindergarten through 5th grade) that are enrolled in the participating schools. Enrollment is taken throughout the year in accordance with space availability. If enrollment falls below 25 full time equivalent children during the school year, PAC will notify the participating schools, the school principal, and parents in writing, 30 days in advance of closing the program. However, all care will be taken to avoid this situation if possible.

Hours of Operation Our program runs from August until June, from the end of school (2:20 PM) until 6:00 PM or as directed by the school. We operate less than four hours per site, per day, except for extraordinary cases as allowed by state guidelines. We are closed on all holidays/in-service days that the school observes, and do not operate during Spring Break, Summer Break or Winter Break. The PAC program will provide care on Early Dismissal (half days) at $10.00 extra/day for students that regularly attend our program.

Inclement Weather PAC will be closed in accordance with the district and/or school closings. If the school closes early, PAC will also close.

Records For your child’s safety, and to comply with state regulations, we require that all enrollment forms, emergency medical information, medical forms, and parent contracts must be completed before your child’s first day of attendance. It is the parents’ responsibility to update their files regularly and inform the Director of any changes. If a natural parent is unauthorized to pick up a child, we REQUIRE copies of court documents stating so in the child’s file, as it is unlawful for us to prohibit a parent from picking up his/her child.

Payments All payments are due every Monday, either by payment online, electronic draft, or dropped in the payment box (where applicable). Late payments incur a $10 fee if not paid by Wednesday. Any payment returned for non-sufficient funds will incur a $30 fee. We reserve the right to cancel services to parents who have payments overdue. Parents wishing to pay bi-weekly or monthly must pay in advance. Children that attend more than three days per week are considered full time, therefore there are no “free” days and full tuition is charged each week for your child’s spot in the club. Please see the Site Director for questions on payments and for details on our online payment system.

Staff Each class will consist of 1 lead teacher : up to 15 students. Each staff member has been selected based on their educational background, experience and their enthusiasm to work with children. For all employees, an FBI criminal records check and fingerprinting will be performed and comply with all school district policies, as well as local, state and federal laws and regulations. At least one certified teacher will be on-site to offer assistance with homework.

Personal Belongings Children should only bring items they need for school. Please check the lost and found if an item is missing. Children may bring special items from home on planned special days. Please label these items clearly.

Snacks All after school students will be given a healthy, nutritional snack each day.

Miscellaneous If you decide to withdraw your child from the program, a two-week written notice is required to be given to the Site Director. Custodial Parents have the right to visit anytime their child is present and are encouraged to do so. There will be opportunities for parental involvement throughout the school year. Near the end of the school year PAC will conduct a parent satisfaction survey.

Arrival and Departure ProceduresArrival/Departure Children must be picked up by 6:00 pm or as directed by the participating school. All children must be signed out by an adult at least 18 years old. Parents/guardians or emergency contacts will be contacted by telephone if the child has not been picked up by the designated pick up time. If no contact can be made with parents/guardian or emergency contacts by 6:20 pm Social Services will then be called.

Late Pick-Up Whenever possible, parents should call the school when she/he will be late for pick up. Alternate pick up arrangements should be considered. Continued late pick up may result in suspension or termination of services. Late pick up fees will be $10.00 for the first 15 minutes and $5.00 for each additional 15 minutes, per child. (i.e. 30 minutes late would be a late fee of $15.00)

Sign In/Out Procedures When you pick up a child, you must sign your child out. A child will be released ONLY to the persons who are listed on the authorized pick-up section of the enrollment form. If unauthorized persons come to pick up a child, the parents will be notified. The persons authorized to pick up a child must be 18 years old and must show a photo ID. We have a 100% ID check policy enforced unless known to the staff or director. If a parent or authorized person arriving to pick up a child, is observed as being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the child will be kept on the school’s property pending notification of properly authorized personnel.

Discipline and Behavior ManagementWe want each child to enjoy the activities planned and benefit from their experience with PAC. Please make sure your child is aware of our rules. Parents will be informed by phone, in writing and through parent conferences if their child continues to display behavior problems. Discipline techniques involve positive reinforcement for good behavior and explanation of behavior that is unacceptable. Children may be denied the opportunity to participate in an activity if poor behavior continues, that child will be directed to an alternative activity. Corporal discipline will not be used nor will food or other care needs be denied as punishment.

Disciplinary Action The following behavior problems may lead to disciplinary action, suspension and/or termination from PAC:• Repeatedly engaging in fighting.• Stealing or defacing the school/site or other property.• Refusing to follow basic safety rules.• Continued disrespect of staff and other children.• Discourteous behavior toward staff and other children.• Continually not following established rules, guidelines and/or instructions. • Bullying on any level will not be tolerated. Big Blue Marble Academy reserves the right to immediately suspend and/or

terminate services due to violation of this policy.

Suspension and/or Termination Parents will be given written notification of termination with a one-week period for obtaining new services. Immediate termination could occur if PAC staff feel it cannot maintain the safety and well-being of the child or other children.

Health, Illness and Safety ProceduresChild Abuse or Neglect PAC is required by law to report any and all forms of abuse and neglect to the Department of Social Services. We will cooperate with the authorities in the investigation of any reported cases.

Emergencies In the event of an emergency, parents will be contacted by the Director via telephone and informed of any change in location. If parent/guardian cannot be reached, Emergency Contacts will be contacted. If no one can be reached within two hours, Social Services will be contacted. A copy of each site’s Emergency Action Plan is available upon request.

Injuries There will be at least one employee per site that is certified in CPR and First Aid. In the event of an accident, we will follow the proper procedures outlined below:• Administer First Aid for minor accidents (cuts, scrapes, bruises, etc.) according to the proper procedures. • Complete a written Accident Report concerning the injury.• Contact parent/guardian/emergency contact if the injury is above the shoulder or appears to require attention by the parent.

We will record all attempts made to contact the parent.• If the injury requires immediate medical attention we will contact Emergency Medical Service authorities (911). Your child may

be transported by ambulance to the hospital. A staff member will stay with the child until the parent/guardian/emergency contact arrives.

Medications PAC only administers emergency medication. Emergency medications include Epi-pen and inhalers. If your child is prescribed an Epi-Pen or inhaler, you will need to have your child’s physician complete a written Medication Consent Form and return it with your child’s medication to PAC.

Sickness Your child should not attend if they display any of the following symptoms: temperature of 101° or higher, contagious or communicable illness, vomiting and/or diarrhea. if your child begins to display any of these symptoms while at PAC, parents will be notified by telephone of their child’s illness and pick up will be required.
