your route to graduation starts here...Personal development can make a bigimpact on your future careerIt may be that you already have a great deal ofknowledge of your profession and are lookingto formalise that knowledge into a qualification,or it may be that on leaving school you are notsure that a full honours degree is for you.Whatever your personal situation, there areseveral reasons why you might opt for afoundation degree or a professionaldevelopment course at South West College:

• Location, location, location -sometimes the idea of pushing yourselffurther can seem daunting; a foundationdegree or professional developmentcourse may offer a more accessiblestepping stone. You will be able to studyat your own pace and fit it aroundemployment and family commitments.Don’t underestimate yourself, formalqualifications are not always necessaryfor entry. An individual's relevantexperience, achievements and motivationto undertake the programme will all betaken into account as well.

• It’s not that expensive! - for manypeople taking a break from earning is adecision they are simply not in a positionto take, and some would rather maintainfinancial independence than give upwork in order to continue their studies.

A foundation degree or professionaldevelopment course offers you theopportunity to do both, and in fact, continuing working whilst you study is activelyencouraged.

• It will make a big impact long term! –all foundation degrees and professionaldevelopment courses are designed withemployability skills in mind and aredeveloped in conjunction with employers. This ensures that they meet currentemployment needs. Therefore, oncompletion of one of these courses youhave a qualification and a range of skillswhich are attractive to employers. Theseskills are particularly useful if you arelooking to become a higher leveltechnician or associate professional suchas a legal executive, marketing consultantor personnel officer.

• It's a great place to start - once you'vestarted you may find yourself wonderingwhy you hadn't thought about takingqualifications before. It’s the gettingstarted part that is the hardest. Once youare in you will find a new network offriends, learn skills that will challenge andreward you and get a new sense ofconfidence.

Understanding foundation degreesA foundation degree is a degree levelqualification which combines academic studywith work place learning. Designed inassociation with employers, they arequalifications to equip people with therelevant skills, knowledge and understandingto achieve academic results as well asimprove performance and productivity in thework place.

Foundation degrees focus on a particular jobor profession. They are intended to increasethe professional and technical skills of currentor potential staff within a profession, orintending to go into that profession. Afoundation degree is the equivalent of twothirds of a full honours degree and is a fullyflexible qualification allowing students tostudy part-time or full-time to fit their lifestyle.A full-time foundation degree will take twoyears to complete, and part-time courses willnormally take three years. However, at SouthWest College, a unique fast-track option isalso available part-time over two years (twosummer semesters included). Completingan honours degree following on from afoundation degree will normally take twoextra years.

save money and achieve your goalsTHE LOW COST FACTS ABOUT STUDYING AT SWC!

South West College operates anAccreditation of Prior Experiential Learning(APEL) process to acknowledge unaccreditedlearning experiences. APEL is a processthrough which the learning students havegained from experience can be counted. This process relates to prior learning whichhas been done by students which has notalready been formally assessed. This includesprior learning gained through community-based learning, workplace learning andtraining, continuing professionaldevelopment and independent learning.

APEL can help students to:• Get a place on an appropriate

Foundation Degree at a college if you

don’t have the normal entry qualificationsbut can show that you have thenecessary knowledge, skills andunderstanding.

• Gain credit towards modules of aFoundation Degree so as to shorten thenormal period of learning by showingthat you already have the knowledge, skills and understanding needed forparticular parts of the programme orqualification (e.g. units or modules).

Who is APEL for?• Individuals in the workplace looking for

recognised credit for entry to anacademic programme at higher

education level.• Learners who may have exited a higher

education programme prior tocompletion or the receipt of credit andwho wish to count that learning towardsanother award.

• Learners who wish to ‘top-up’ an existingqualification.
