COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS

Double Jointed

What does it mean to be double jointed?

Let’s deal with this at the end.

JOINT ARCHITECTURE

• Three classification of Joints:• Synarthroes - Immovable

• Sutures• Syndesmoses

• Amphiarthroses - Slightly Moveable• Synchondroses• Symphyses

• Diarthroses or synovial- Freely Moveable

SYNDESMOSES (IMMOVABLE)

Syndesmoses

The mid-radioulnar joint is an example of a

syndesmosis, where fibrous tissue binds the

bones together.

AMPHIARTHROSES (SLIGHTLY MOVEABLE)Synchondroses

The sternocostal joints are examples of

synchondroses, wherein the articulating bones

are joined by a thin layer of hyaline

cartilage.

hyaline cartilage disc separating the bones of the pubic symphysis, typical of a symphysis

joint.

SIX TYPES

Page 14: ENMU

ARTICULAR CARTILAGE

1.Spreads loads over a wider area, reducing contact stress

2.Provides a protective lubrication that minimizes friction and wear at the joint. It allows for movement at the joint with minimum wear.

Dense white connective tissue that 1- 5 mm thick.

Page 15: ENMU

ARTICULAR FIBROCARTILAGE

In the form of either a fibrocartilaginous disc or partial discs known as menisci, is also present between the articulating bones.

EX. Symphysi pubis and Intervertebral Discs

Partial Disc Ex: What do you think?

ARTICULAR CONNECTIVE TISSUE

Tendons: Muscles to bones

Ligaments: Bones to bones
