Romans 12:21“Do not be over-come by evil butovercome evilwith good."

The other daythere was anincident in my

other world thatcaused a minor con-flict with anotherperson, because ofa misunderstanding. It made me thinkwhy do people do

what they do? So that is how this messagecame to life this week.

Some events in human history impactus so greatly, that we will forever remem-ber the circumstance surrounding wherewe were when we heard the news. I willnever forget sitting in a classroom while inthe 9th grade and hearing the reports ofJFK’s assassination over the school PA sys-tem and watching my teacher Mrs. Lovingscry. Nor will I ever forget that I watched onthe TV seeing smoke billowing up from theNorth Tower of the World Trade Center andmoments later see the second plane crashinto the South Tower. Those images are for-ever embedded in our memories. You prob-ably remember exactly where you were andwhat you were doing when you first heardthe news. But today, I want to ask and

attempt to answer the question that nodoubt has puzzled so many since that hor-rific day. How can we become better ratherthan bitter as result of the lessons of life?

Scripture in Ephesians 6:12 commandsus to not to be overcome by evil, but toovercome evil with good. You should knowthat our battle is not against flesh andblood, but against the spiritual forces of evilin the heavenly realm.

You have to overcome any tendenciesto give in to discouragement, frustration orhurt. Take the offensive instead of just pre-ceding along like robots who fail to utilizethe power of God’s promise. Romans 12:21says, "Do not be overcome by evil but over-come evil with good." Amen!

We have a choice in every situation toeither be a victor or to be vanquished. Toomany believers are failing to experienceconsistent victory over their anger, fear andself-centered responses to adversity. Jesuswants us to experience His life in all of itsabundance, but too many Christians todayare allowing themselves to be defeated bythe world, the flesh and the devil. He, whoovercomes with the good of patience, for-bearance, kindness, and beneficence tothose who have wronged you, is betterthan the mighty.

Here are a few guidelines for overcom-ing evil with good instead of succumbing topower of evil that seeks to defeat us emo-tionally, mentally, physically, socially andspiritually. Instead of being over comers,

many Christians are merely succumbers inChrist and in the body of believers youbelong to.

You have to overshadow any opposi-tion with His mighty power. To overshadowsomething is to let it appear much moreprominent or important. Be like Mary wholearned how to let the power of God over-shadow any negative criticism, misunder-standing, or misconstruing of the factswhen she was told, “Nothing is impossiblewith God.” Luke 1:35 says, “Then the angelsaid to Mary, The Holy Spirit will come uponyou and the power of the Most High willovershadow you like a shining cloud and sothe holy offspring will shall be born of you.”Amen!

You have to overlook another’s faulteven when you do not want to. To overlookis to fail to notice, to ignore, and to lookbeyond. Proverbs 19:11 says, “A man’s wis-dom gives him patience; it is to his glory tooverlook an offense.” Learn to be biggerthan any problem through the power thatChrist gives you. In a day when lawsuitsand people are quick to demand their rightsPaul tells us that you are not to takevengeance into your hands, but leave roomfor God’s wrath. You are to overcome withforgiveness that will break the cycle ofretaliation and lead to reconciliation. Thealternative is terrible because returning evilfor evil hurts you just as much as it hurts anopponent. Forgiving another person freesyou of the heavy load of bitterness that

defiles many. Choose to be better ratherthan bitter from every situation. Amen!

You have to overflow with love, hope, joy and faith. The Greek word is hyperperis-seuo, which means to abound moreexceedingly. To overflow means to extendbeyond the limits by going over the brim ofvessel. David wrote, in Psalms 23:5-6, “Mycup overflows.” People who allow the Spiritof God to empower them will have the spir-itual resources that allow them to overflowwith kindness, patience, and a harvest ofrighteousness.” Amen!

You must overpower with Christ’smighty power working in and through you.Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do everythingGod asks me to do with the help of Christwho gives me the strength and power.”Amen! Plug in to the power source ofChrist’s word, His presence and His love soyou will not give in to the temptation ofresponding out of your flesh instead ofChrist’s power in you. He who began agood work in you is able to complete it. Donot doubt, fret or get sidetracked by unim-portant problems that are like insects thatcan be warded off with Christ’s powerfulrepellants. God told Zerubbabel, “Not bypower or by might, but by my Spirit saysthe Lord. Mountains will be removed.”Amen!

When wec l a i mto fol-

low Jesus, theworld takesnotice whetherwe like it or not.We may not feelwe are witness-ing, but formany peoplewe're the onlyview of Jesusthey will ever

see and the only words of Jesus theywill ever hear. We may not realize itbut the way we live cries out, "Followmy example, as I follow the exampleof Christ."

Do we want others to put intopractice what they see in us? Wouldour example cause others to be drawncloser to God or to drift further away?Do we follow Jesus' command to loveone another so that, "By this all menwill know you are My disciples" (John13:35)? This is a huge responsibilityand one we must not assume is onlyfor the "Super-Christian."

A man had an "I Love Jesus"sticker on his car. One day, as he spedin and out of traffic, he realized hisdriving was not setting a goodChristian example. He solved this"problem" by removing the sticker.Rather than modify an area of his life, the fellow removed his public identifi-cation with Jesus.

We cannot remove the "I LoveJesus" stickers from our life. Theworld is watching and we must bebold enough to stand and accept theaccountability. We need men andwomen of strength and character -Brothers and Sisters who love oneanother and love the Lord with alltheir heart, soul, mind, and strength!Let's fall more in love with Jesus Christand be among those who seek to livea life that brings Him glory and honorin ALL we do. Others are ready to fol-low. Let's show them the path toChrist as we set the example.

that comfort ustoday is that weare slaves ofthings and nolonger know howto be free inChrist. Housechores, shop-ping, sports, recreations andother activities

are so largely demanding in our daysand routine that prayer is utterly for-eign to our prayer closet. We areswamped with meetings, interviews, satisfying customers, beating lastyears sales record, making deals, mas-tering computer technology; however, all of these things are great and impor-tant, but let’s not forget the wisdom ofChrist, who said, “Men ought to alwayspray and not get discouraged. Dear Dr. Hollie,

Iwas wondering if you could giveme hints on how tomake my husband

fight fair. Any time Idecide I need to have adiscussion with himabout something thathe did or said thatupset me, his response, every time, is to replywith a question orremark about some-thing I did or said. Idon’t really mind that he brings upmy faults (not all the time anyway),but we’re doing this all the timenow and we never get anythingsettled. We just go back and forthdefending our own actions. Whatam I doing wrong? And whatshould I be doing to make our con-versations productive?Unfair Fighting

Dear Unfair, One thing is that fighting is never

fair, so don’t expect it to be.Before you begin a conver-sation with your spouse, tellhim that today you onlywant to focus on one issueand one problem. Let thepast remain in the past. You can always set a dateand time to discuss those

old problems that stillmay be lingering. Onlyaddress that one issue

and don’t bring up anything else. Itusually works if you stay on targetand don’t allow yourself to discussanything else, even if somethingelse is brought up.

“Prepare for lead-ership” I Tim.4:6-16 was ourchurch School les-son. Paul toldTimothy in theprevious versesthat the HolySpirit said that inthe last timessome would turnaway from thetrue faith and fol-low deceptive

spirits and teaching of demons.Timothy’s charge was to combat thiscorrupt teaching in the church. Thiswould require preparation on Timothy’spart; preparation implies intentionality, deliberateness, goals, and effort. Hemust not adopt a cavalier attitude in hisChristian life. This is a very timely lessonbecause the church in many instancesseems to have lost its desire for truth, what is wrong based on scripture isreadily accepted in the church today.Members seem to seek out those

churches where anything goes, wherethe leader is more interested in lifting uphimself than lifting up Jesus the onlytrue head of the church. Paul tellsTimothy “keep a close watch on howyou live and on your teaching, stay trueto what is right for the sake of your ownsalvation and the salvation of those whohear you.” It would behoove the preach-ers and teachers of today to rememberthis. Our morning message was deliv-ered by pastor L.T.Morgan his subjectwas “He loved us enough to become aman” Heb. 2:16-18. There was a greatchasm between God and mankind; asGod the creator He did not have thebenefit of the human experience.Although he made man and understoodwhat mankind was like, he did not havethe experience of disappointments, heart aches, hunger, tiredness, and thelost of a loved one, the whole humanexperience. So in order to understand usand feel what we feel, to be able to sym-pathies with us and intercede for us;God loved us so that he became a man. Be Blessed

By now, you all have probably heardabout or actually heard the taping ofthe phone call made by, then Mayor

Pro-Tem Dwaine Caraway, to the policethe night of January 2nd of this year. Hereare excerpts from the audio taping:

Caraway said his wife got upset afterhe complained about her throwing awayhis kitchen aprons. He told Deputy CraigMiller the argument grew heated and “soto separate myself from her, I stayeddown in the game room away from her, holding the door so she couldn’t come tothe door. So, of course, she’s kicking thedoor. She’s doing everything under thesun.” “Barbara has a chemical imbalance,I think. I hate to say this. But I think thatthis is probably what it is. She sometimescan get in a fit of rage. It’s not about infi-delity; it’s not about me hitting her. She’sthe smartest person in the world andwhen she gets set off, everybody just getout of the way. And she just went andtook it too far tonight.”

Caraway told Miller his wife was stick-ing a knife in the cracks of the game-roomdoor. “I don’t think Barbara has intentionsof hurting me, but in the midst of a fit ofrage, you never know what might happen.

So the best thing for me to do, so I would-n’t put bruises and hurt her, was not beingafraid, was for me to try and to do what Ineeded to do to try and keep the situationunder control as best I could under thecircumstances.” Because I could havewalked out of there. Now, if I had walkedout of there, I’d have walked out therewith a chair and I would have been swing-ing and protecting myself, period. OK?But I did not want it to escalate to thatlevel.”

When Officer Miller asked Mr.Caraway how he finally got out of there,he said, “I talked to her…I was in thereabout 25 minutes holding the door. Andthen my stupid (expletive) put a chair upto the door and, and I’m standing thereright by the chair. And she kicked that(expletive) door and that chair hurt my(expletive) leg. I thought my leg was bro-ken. So, I said, that’s a bad move.” Thetape revealed that Mrs. Caraway later slidMayor Caraway the keys under the doorand he left out the back door.

Mr. Caraway refused to press charges.Stating that there has never been a histo-ry of violence, and he hopes that her fam-ily will convince her to get counseling. So, what do you think? I think it’s really

In the lastmonth or soI’ve heard and

seen a couple ofthings that aretruly disturbing.Disturbing in thatit really hurts ourchildren. One isthat fact that theywill do studies on

“BULLYING”. The second, at the NFLcombine it was revealed that some ath-letes work hard during the week, liftingweights, running, doing anything theycan to make their bodies look intimidat-ing so they might not have to “COM-PETE” or they scare their opponents.

Bullying is as old as prostitution andgambling. Goliath was a Bully, and we allknow how that turned out. Every schoolI attended and every time I changedgrades there was a new Bully, someoneto try to intimidate you. Believe it or notthe first day I attended Southern BibleInstitute, one of my fellow students, apreacher by the way, tried to intimidateme.

Bullies and Bullying always works itselfout. You fight them; let them knowyou’re not afraid to fight them. You getyour brother, or homey and fight thembut it always works itself out. Some guysare bullies for protection they themselvesare afraid of.

We over protect our kids. Until Ireached High School all sports played inmy neighborhood were pick up games, nothing organized. We were our own ref-erees, police, judge and jury. That taughtus life skills, problem solving, diplomacy, etc.

Everything now is organized. Referees

coaches, etc. there is no rhythm, no souleverything is choreographed. That leadsto the next problem “COMPETITION”our kids don’t like to compete they wantthe deck stacked. (LeBron, Wade, andChris). We walked miles to other neigh-borhoods if they thought they could beatus in Baseball, Basketball and Football.

I went to the TSU relays this week.I noticed that various athletes and coach-es try not to compete against the topathletes. On relays they won’t run theirtop boys so they can have an excuse. Then when they get in pressure situa-tions they can’t respond.

A few years back at the Texas Relays,Carl Lewis passed the Olympic ChampionDonovan Bailey. Bailey not wanting to getbeat, grabbed his hamstring. In an inter-view later he said his calf muscle tightenup. That wasn’t what he grabbed duringthe race. Had he continued his teamwould have been second. He didn’t care.Later that same year Dallas’ own MichaelJohnson agreed to run Donovan in amatch race 150 yards. Michael couldn’tbeat Donovan out of the curve, hegrabbed his hamstring. They came to getMike with a special wheelchair with oneleg stuck out. Wouldn’t you know it, itwas the same leg he grabbed! What acoincidence; or what a plan!

Nate Newton said The Cowboys needcompetition at each position to bring thisteam back. Excellent idea but it won’twork, guys won’t compete if the job isn’thanded to them they will ask to be trad-ed. That’s not just Cowboys, that’s theRangers, the Mavericks, the Lakers andthe Yankees. Leave the Bully along he’llget handled. We need our kids to COM-PETE again.

much to do about nothing, and apparent-ly, so do most of the voters in Dallas. Here are a few comments readers maderegarding the incident between MayorCaraway and his wife:

“He shouldn’t have done anything atall,” said Davis, 29, who lives in UptownDallas, and works in marketing. “It’s hispersonal life. Who cares?”

Willie Allen said he doesn’t faultCaraway’s handling of the matter. “That’shis personal business,” Allen said. “And Ithink people should stay out of his per-sonal business.” When asked if Caraway’spolitical position made a difference. Allensaid, “A man’s a man. He was on his per-sonal property…people take things all outof proportion.”

“In spite of his difficulties, he stayedwithin the law because he could have eas-ily protected himself, but he protected his

wife. In spite of the rage of his wife, hewas a man,” said Jerry Bob Chambers.

Some feel like Caraway should expectthings like this to happen when heinvolves the “system” in his personal busi-ness. I think this is all a ploy by thosewho would try to discredit MayorCaraway. And, I agree that it is his per-sonal business. I would like to ask ourreaders another question. What wouldyou prefer he do? Not call the police andallow the situation to escalate into some-thing much bigger? If Mayor Carawayhad not called the police and the situationturned to violence, then we would havesaid he should have called the police. Ijust wonder if we would be making sucha big deal out of the situation if the inci-dent were between one of our politicalleaders of a “lighter” hue.

Really, much to do about nothing!

Part 1: One of themost significantachievements ofblacks in the statewas their participa-tion in the TexasCentennial of 1936.This event wasimportant becauseit allowed AfricanAmericans to high-light the contribu-

tions that they had made to the state'sand the nation's development. Throughthe efforts of A. Maceo Smith of theDallas Negro Chamber of Commerce andSamuel W. Houston of Huntsville, theHall of Negro Life was built at Fair Parkin Dallas to bring to the state the worksof Harlem Renaissance painter AaronDouglass as well as to exhibit the paint-ings of Texas artists Samuel A. Countee of Houston and Frank Sheinall of Galveston. More important-ly, the Negro Day event held in Dallas as the black celebration of the Texas Centennial proved to bean important opportunity for black Texans to meet and plan strategy to end the segregation and dis-crimination that they faced.

Some people saythat communi-cators are born,

not taught nor edu-cated. Upon arrivalon planet earth theyare natural crowdpleasers with a loyalaudience and a joyto be around.

Linda Olden Smithis a woman on a dig-ital mission. Sec-uring a televisionstation.

Welcome LindaOlden Smith to the national stage. A sheer nat-ural in every way. Instantly you notice the con-tagious smile and flamboyace confidence. Mrs.Smith is a native of Detroit Michigan, attendedHenry Ford High School. She graduated fromthe same school that Diana Ross graduated fromCass Tech. The path to college was set by hergrandmother who was a member of the originalJubilee Singers. This was the historic group whotraveled raising money for Fisk University. So,Ms. Smith is off to Fisk University.

By 1976, Mrs. Smith was a student atTexas Southern University and officially workingin the field designed for her personality. AtKCOH and KYOK Radio, she dabbled in news, voice overs and came familiar with all the wavesof radio. About this time, the world of media-tion was taking on a life of its own. And, ofcourse, Mrs. Smith designed a successful medi-ation approach that lead her from Houston toAtlanta to Dallas, and top recognition of mediat-ing disputes . . . ‘with the thought resolution pro-tocol’ from the Dallas Bar Association. Really???Yes, indeed!!

So, you can plainly see that all roads con-tinue to lead to communicating and making adifference. Major clients such as United StatesPostal Service Redress Program, Texas YouthCommission, Texas Department ofTransportation and EEOC are but a few of theclients that have extended their mental grasp, adhered to the new approach all for the exclu-sive purpose of assisting parties to achieve theultimate resolution potential.

You may ask yourself, what then lead to atelevision station? Radio is always a reason totransition to the next level. And opportunity isalways knocking. Mrs. Smith created a radio talkshow “On-The-Job”, surrounding hundreds ofmediations and the more than 450 people shetrained as mediators. Enough reasons to visual-ly conduct business, focus locally and keep tra-ditional values. Afterall, 80% if what we do isstill visual.

Her book entitled “Playing the ResolutionCard” was published in 2008. The book isthought provoking and gets to the “nitty-gritty”of what it takes to make mediation an invaluabletool in recognizing and resolving conflict. Ifpeace is one of your passions, it is a practicalbook of harmony for discussions in your home, the workplace, the jogging trail and I cannotleave out your local watering hole.

Finally, we have a host of talented commu-nicators out there. But if we are to change thecourse of image, headlines, negative reporting, etc., etc., we cannot do it on somebody’s else‘dime’. You have to “bite the bullet” and simplyown your own media. In advance, thanks LindaOlden Smith.

As usual, I am out of time, but you can logon or more expressly send Linda Olden Smith anencouraging email at: [email protected] . . .
