EEEEnnnnlllliiiigggghhhhtttteeeennnnmmmmeeeennnntttt takes place when the soul becomes filled with the power of Love. This results ina heightened sense of self-awareness (light) accompanied by a deep sense of a 'peace thatpasses all understanding.'

RRRReeeessssuuuurrrrrrrreeeeccccttttiiiioooonnnn occurs when our flesh is consumed by the power of Love. This results inphysical healing accompanied by a deep sense of true Joy, which is the quiet delight ofgratitude. In this regard, resurrection could be called the 'enlightenment of the whole body.'

What often happens in the midst of strife, is that we turn to spiritual means for comfort. Thefirst response to our efforts comes in the form of enlightenment, which produces the peace andcomfort we are seeking. This will often cause us to relax our spiritual efforts, and to acceptsomething less than a full healing. Instead, we must press on and even intensify our efforts,since our flesh is far more resistant to change than our souls.

The cleansing of the soul is like the washing of a window. Whereas, the correction of the flesh islike the weeding of a garden. Washing windows takes an effort, but pulling weeds is extremely'down and dirty' and requires us to sweat.

The transition from Old to New Testament consciousness is sometimes referred to as“making the move from Law to Grace.” The purpose of the Law is to make us self con-scious, and capable of Love. The nature of Grace is the ‘unmerited favor’ we receivethough our willingness to live as Love in all of our relations. It is written that “Love ful-fills the Law.” Love does not deny the Law, it simply supersedes It, and makes It un-necessary. To live in Grace is to live as Love, expressing through the Law. The call of the Gospels is a call to enter the Christ experience. It’s a call to move fromliving under the Law to living from the consciousness of Love and to move from the ex-perience of God as a Power, to one of living in Its Presence.

This Gospel was finished about ten years afterthe writing of Mark. It was also after the destruc-tion of the Temple as well as most of Jerusalemin 70 CE. It takes what is in Mark and adds thesaying and teachings of Jesus. The author, aneducated person and a former tax collector inCapernaum was sometimes called Levi. He iswriting to a Jewish audience--to the Jews of thehomeland in and around Jerusalem. Traditionhas it that this Gospel was written in Aramaicwhile Matthew was in Alexandria, Egypt, wherethere was a large community of Jews. Matthewmeans “gift of the Lord.” His main purpose wasto show his Jewish readers that Jesus was theMessiah. He did this by describing how Jesus’life and ministry fulfilled the Old TestamentScriptures. His writings are considered to be themost historically accurate. ❧

� GGGGoooossssppppeeeellll ooooffff MMMMaaaarrrrkkkk �

Finished some thirty years after Jesus’ death, thisGospel was composed in Italy and written inGreek around 75-80 CE. It’s considered the firstGospel that was written and because it was inGreek, it enabled the story of Jesus to spreadthroughout the empire. It is the simple and basicin its style. Its author was first a follower of Pauland was with him and Barnabas on their firstmissionary journey (Acts 12:25). However, he laterjoined Peter and supported him in his ministryas an interpreter. (Peter’s Greek was inade-quate.) It is viewed that this Gospel is really thevoice and recollections of Peter that Mark thenrecords. Its focus is on the miracles and works ofJesus and was directed to the followers in Romeand other non-Jewish readers. Peter’s teachingsrepresented the position that a “human” Jesushad fulfilled the Messianic hope of Israel. This isin contrast to Paul’s position which was far moreconcerned with the “mystical” Messiah thanwith the human Jesus. Peter’s last ministry activ-ities were in Italy and this is where he was put todeath. It is likely that the Last Supper and theplace where the disciples met after the crucifixionwas in the home of Mark’s mother, Mary, in thecity of Capernaum. ❧

Luke was probably a gentile by birth and waswell educated in the Greek tradition. He was aphysician, companion and follower of Paul.Written in Greece in the late 90’s, this Gospel triesto impress the Hellenized Jews, as well as thegentiles, with the great sweep of history that cen-ters around the life of Jesus. Paul’s teachingsstand behind Luke’s narratives. He writes boththis Gospel and the Book of Acts in a stylishGreek form. Luke reveals that what the Law hadbeen the to Jews, the Holy Spirit is to the newChristians. In Acts, he reinterprets the celebrationof Pentecost, fifty days after Passover, in whichthe Jews marked the giving of the Law to Moseson Mt. Sinai. In the “new” version, Pentecostrepresents the coming of the Holy Spirit into theLife of the Church. These two Books of the NewTestament, Luke and Acts, provide one of thebest and most detailedd record of the history ofthe early Christian Church. ❧

Probably the most treasured work in the wholeNew Testament, this Gospel was written by amystic and poet who wanted to bring his read-ers to a “re-birth” in consciousness. He wantedthem to experience “new life” through theteachings of Jesus. He builds his message withlong conversations between Jesus and others tobring forth the most mystical interpretation ofthe life and teachings of Jesus. Probably the lastGospel written, its message is a force that can beactive in our lives because it teaches us how theLiving Presence of Christ will transform our livesfrom within. John was one of the original andyoungest of the twelve disciples and was the onlydisciple who didn’t die a violent death. Written inAsia Minor, this Gospel is concerned with theunderlying meaning of the teachings of Jesus.Along with Mother Mary, he ministered formany years from his church in Ephesis locatedin present day Turkey. However, for a shortperiod, he was exiled by the emperor to theGreek Island of Patmos where he scribed the lastbook of the Bible, The Revelation. ❧

The New Testament scriptures are laidout in the following way. The Gospels,from the Greek word meaning “GoodNews,” are Matthew, Mark, Luke andJohn which give us the first account ofthe life and teachings of Jesus. The Bookof Acts, written by Luke, details the “actsor actions” of the Apostles, and the ori-gins of the early church. It is here that weare given insight into how the Apostleslived and demonstrated the Christ teach-ings after the death and resurrection ofJesus. Next, are the series of the Epistles(Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians,Philippians, etc.). These are the letters ofPaul to the communities in Asia Minor(present day Turkey and Greece) andrecord the beginning of the Christianteachings. The communities that Paulwrote to formed the foundation for thespread of Christianity throughout theRoman Empire. Then, we have thebooks written by the other disciples(James and Peter as well as the letters ofJohn). Finally, we end with theRevelation; the inspired message of Jesusto St. John.

The Hellenistic (Greek educated) Jewswere to be crucial to the development andspread of early Christianity. These Jewswere the Jews of the Diaspora or the dis-persion which was the scattering and ex-ile of Jews to countries outside ofPalestine. This took place during theBabylonian captivity from 597 to 538B.C.E. These Jews then stayed in their newcountries and formed small, exiled com-munities. It was later in these communi-

ties that the message of the Jewish Christor the Messiah found eager listeners.

Paul was a Hellenistic Jew, who previouslywas known as Saul, and who had grownup in Tarsus in present day Turkey. Hewas a bilingual Jew, speaking both Greekand Aramaic. He was one of the peoplewho strongly persecuted the HellenisticJewish followers of Jesus until he experi-enced his own conversion on the road toDamascus. It’s interesting to realize thatPaul was not converted to Christianity bythe Gospels--they hadn’t even been writ-ten yet! Instead, his conversion cameabout as he realized and experienced thePresence of the Living Christ.

�The book of Acts presents, in great detail,the conversion of Paul and his later worksas an Apostle. His experience on the roadto Damascus was a turning point in themovement of Christianity beyond theembrace of Judaism. After he was chang-ed through hearing the voice of the Lord,he was then baptized and immediatelybegan a new life as the man Paul. First,he went into exile in Arabia in order to in-tegrate and deepen his awareness ofChrist. He did this private work for threeyears. After which time he began hispublic ministry. He was to spend the re-mainder of his life dedicated to mission-ary work among the Gentiles (the non-Jews and pagans of the time), while thedisciple Peter would lead the proclama-tion of the faith to the Jewish communitiesin Palestine. Jame then became theleader of the followers in Jerusalem.

Paul was devoted to establishing “house”churches in the cities of the Mediter-ranean world and guiding theirdevelopment, both with personal visitsand with his letters. After an intense ca-reer proclaiming the new faith during histhree journeys from Palestine to Rome,Paul spent his final years as a Romanprisoner and was beheaded in Romeabout 62 C.E.

Paul’s most creative contribution to theindividual was the union in him of theuniversal and the particular. He releasedthe universal message of Jesus fromJewish limits, laying the foundation forGentile Christianity. At the same time, heplanted the Christ message in the strate-gic center of the Northwest Mediter-ranean world in the firm conviction thatthese churches were “colonies of heaven.”Paul’s work in establishing thesecommunities influenced and helped toshape the history of the Western world.

Paul’s theology has been called Christ-centered and his words during his ad-dress at Athens have been used in prayercountless of times.... “In him we live andmove and have our being.” (Acts 17:28) Theclassic statement of Paul’s mysticism isfound in his letter to the Galatians wherehe writes, “I through the law died to the law,that I might live to God. I have beencrucified with Christ; it is no longer I wholive, but Christ who lives in me.”(Galatians 2:19-20)

It is generally agreed that Paul’s mostsignificant contribution to the ChristianChurch is his teaching about the “Body ofChrist.” Today, the “Body of Christ” isunderstood as all of those who forsakeeverything pertaining to the personal,limited, human personality self, and seekto live and express the Christ standard inorder to bring forth the unlimited fruits ofSpirit. Joining with others in thisconsciousness is joining together in the“Body of Christ.” This has been the greatmystery of the Christian experience.Paul’s idea is that the revelation of Christis open to all of us. He proclaimed thisgreat mystery when he said, “Christ inyou, the hope of glory.” (Colossians 1:27)

Present day writer and teacher, Dr. RoccoErrico, describes the mystery as follows:

“The purpose of ‘Christ in us,’ then, isnot only for self-realization, but forthe manifestation of the kingdom ofheaven wherever we may be. Throughthe realization of a ‘Christ conscious-ness’ we become fulfilled individuals,mature and complete.”

In essence, what we see in Paul is that hewas more interested in the Christ thatlived in him rather than the historicalJesus. He was the only Apostle who didn’tpersonally know Jesus. However, his lifebecame and is still becoming the modelfor our own journey on the road toDemascas and the awakening of ChristConsciousness in all humanity. ❧

Because of her words about him, manyfrom her village believed him to be theChrist. After hearing Jesus speak, it isrecorded that many more became believ-ers. After two days with the Samaritans,Jesus continues on his journey to Galilee.(John 4:27-43)

The “Woman at the Well” story appearsonly in the Gospel of John. This Gospel isconsidered to be the most spiritual ormystical of the four Gospels (Matthew,Mark, Luke and John). Jesus has left Jerusalem to return to theGalilee. While in Jerusalem at the outercourtyard of the Temple, he had over-turned the tables of the money changers.Also, while he was in the Holy City, hegave his exalted message on “being bornagain” to the Pharisee namedNicodemus. In order to make the tripback to the Galilee, without having totravel the longer distance on the East sideof the Jordan River, he had to journeythrough the middle province of Samaria.PPPPhhhhaaaarrrriiiisssseeeeeeeessss::::

These were the scribes and scholars whostudied and interpreted the Lawand tothem the Law had become an end initself. As the main conservative religiousgroup, they were attached to titles,honors and the outer forms of worshipand had little under-standing of Truth.They were opposed to Jesus and histeachings.JJJJuuuuddddeeeeaaaa::::

It was known as the Southern Kingdom.After King Solomon’s rule (930 BC), Israel

was split into the South (two tribes) whichwas called Judea and the Northern area(10 tribes) which became known asIsrael. During the time of Jesus, this wholeregion was known as Palestine and itcontained three provinces: Judea in theSouth, Samaria in the middle and Galileein the North. Jesus was raised inNazareth in the North and much of hisministry takes place in this area near theSea of Galilee including the cities of Canaand Capernaum. It was in Cana that heperformed his first miracle of turning thewater into wine at the marriage feast.(John 2:1-11) And it was in Capernaumwhere he found the first of his disciples,Peter, Andrew, James and John. (Matthew

4:18-22) Jerusalem, Bethany andBethlehem were all part of the Southernarea of Judea.GGGGaaaalllliiiilllleeeeeeee::::

Again, the Northern province ofPalestine. It was rich in agricultural landsand gave Jesus the foundation for themany pastoral symbols used within histeaching stories. It also included the Seaof Galilee where Jesus calmed the storm(Mark 4:35-41) and walked on water. (Matthew14:25-33)

SSSSaaaammmmaaaarrrriiiiaaaa::::

The middle province of Palestine. TheJews didn’t accept the Samaritans as“real” Jews. In 720 BC, the Assyrians hadinvaded this area and took it over. Someof the Jews escaped but most were taken



away to Media by the conquerors. (Theancient country of Media is located inpresent day Northwest Iran.) Those thatstayed ended up marrying the invaders.This was an unforgivable crime in theeyes of Orthodox Judaism and becamethe source of the quarrel that continuedto exist with the Samaritans even up tothe time of Jesus. As a result of theirsurrender to the Assyrians, the remainingSamaritans lost their Jewish heritage andwere banned from the ceremonies in theTemple at Jerusalem. Thus, they becamea people living outside Judaism butcontinued with the Jewish rituals. Theyworshipped on Mt. Gerisim instead of atthe Temple in Jerusalem. (Note: It isbelieved that the lost ten tribes of Israelare those that were taken to Media andassimilated into that culture. They neverreturned to the land of their fathers.)JJJJaaaaccccoooobbbb::::

He was the Son of Isaac, the secondpatriarch of ancient Israel afterAbraham. He had a twin brother namedEsau. Jacob became the third patriarchand his twelve sons formed the twelvetribes of Israel thus fulfilling God’spromise to Abraham that he wouldbecome the father of a great nation.Jacob’s name was changed to Israel afterhe “wrestled” all night with the Lord anddemanded and received a blessing. (Genesis

32:24-46) The story of Jacob’s Ladderrecounts his dream of a stairway toheaven filled with angels. (Genesis 28:12)

(Note: It was Abraham who took his sonIsaac up to Mount Moriah where Godtells him to sacrifice Isaac on the altar. Atthe last minute, an angel of the Lordappears and stops Abraham from killingIsaac. Jacob’s eleventh son, known as a“dreamer,” was resented by his olderbothers who cast him into a dried upcistern to die. Among other things, theywere jealous of a beautiful coat theirfather had given Joseph which becameknown as the ‘coat of many colors.’ Hewas rescued from the cistern by a passingcaravan and taken to Egypt where heeventually became an advisor to thePharaoh through his skill in dreaminterpretation. Through the advise ofJoseph, grain was stored up for sevenyears and Eqypt was saved from famine.(Genesis 41) The stage play, “Joseph and theAmazing Technicolor Dream Coat,” isbased on his life and the book, “The RedTent,” is the story of his beloved sister,Dinah.SSSSiiiixxxxtttthhhh HHHHoooouuuurrrr::::

This is the only time that this well ismentioned in scripture but in this story itconnects this area back to the earlyperiod of Jewish history. The land that itwas on was a piece of ground which hadbeen bought by Jacob and on hisdeathbed, he passed it onto Joseph. Thewell is over a hundred feet deep. It was highly unusual for Jesus to speakto a Samaritan let alone an unaccompa-nied woman. Because Jesus was breakingthrough the traditional social andcultural barriers, we are alerted to the factthat something important is about totake place in this story. ❧

Again, this is highly unusual because aJew would be considered ceremoniallyunclean by drinking from a cup touchedby a Samaritan. In fact, eating with aSamaritan was likened to eating the fleshof a swine. Jesus is reaching out acrossthe barriers of culture and history. Thiscan be viewed as the first step in his min-istry of moving beyond the confines ofJudaism. It is here that the truly Universalnature of his message is established.LLLLiiiivvvviiiinnnngggg WWWWaaaatttteeeerrrr::::

Water is a symbol of spiritual cleansingand renewal. Jesus is offering her morethan the well water, which can only sat-isfy her physical thirst. Instead, he offersher the water that can forever purify hersoul and be that spring that reveals thegift of eternal life.EEEEtttteeeerrrrnnnnaaaallll LLLLiiiiffffeeee::::

Endless and everlasting. Life withoutbeginning or end; timeless.HHHHuuuussssbbbbaaaannnnddddssss::::

The five husbands that she had previ-ously been “married to,” were her fivesenses. This means that her soul was tiedto the world through sense consciousnesswhich resulted in her being attached tothe things of the world. The sixth manthat she now was with was not her hus-band but represents her attachment

to the psychic and mental realms of con-sciousness.PPPPrrrroooopppphhhheeeetttt::::

The Samaritan Woman (the soul nature)recognized Jesus as a prophet because heis filled with spiritual wisdom (Light).WWWWoooorrrrsssshhhhiiiipppp::::

The activity of identifying and bestowinglove on spirit. Jesus tells her that shedoesn’t need a special place, a geo-graphic location, or a set ritual to enterinto the awareness of God. In otherwords, he’s saying that the time is com-ing when God will be realized as“everywhere present.”GGGGoooodddd tttthhhheeee FFFFaaaatttthhhheeeerrrr::::

Jesus tells her that God is Spirit and mustbe worshipped in Spirit and in Truth. InJohn’s Gospel, there are three affirma-tions about the divine nature--God isSpirit, Light and Love. The father principleof God represents first cause, the absoluteand the I Am.MMMMeeeessssssssiiiiaaaahhhh::::

Messiah is the Hebrew word for the GreekChristos. The Jews had long been await-ing the Messiah or “anointed one” whowas to rescue them from earthly difficul-ties and bondage. The prophet Isaiahclaimed that in the age of the “promisedone,” the people would not hunger orthirst. (Isaiah 49:10) The revelation of theconsciousness of Christ in humanity is thefulfillment of this promise. In other words,the “Second Coming” is not about the re-turn of Jesus but instead points to therecognition, realization and revelation ofChrist in each person’s soul. Thus, theChrist comes ‘again’ as individualconsciousness.



IIII WWWWhhhhoooo SSSSppppeeeeaaaakkkk ttttoooo YYYYoooouuuu AAAAmmmm HHHHeeee::::

This is the only place where Jesusacknowledges that he is the promisedMessiah before he did so at his trial inJerusalem. (Matthew 26:62-64) This selfdisclosure that he is the Christ, theanointed one is the most importantmessage of this scripture story. Note: Itwas during his ministry, while teachingthe disciples up at the head waters to theJordan River at Banyas in the presentday Golan Heights, that he ask them a

very significant question: “Who do mensay that I am?” There were severaldifferent responses but finally Peter said,“The Christ of God.” This response wasthe first place in the New Testamentwhere Jesus was recognized as theMessiah. (Luke 9:20) Jesus did not agreewith or confirm Peter’s statement butsimply warned them not to speak of thisto anyone. But with the Samaritanwoman, he is the one who identifieshimself as the Christ. ❧

� MMMMyyyyssssttttiiiiccccaaaallll IIIInnnnssssiiiigggghhhhttttssss �

LLLLeeeevvvveeeellllssss ooooffff CCCCoooonnnnsssscccciiiioooouuuussssnnnneeeessssssss::::

Three levels of consciousness aresymbolically represented in this story.The soul is represented by the woman,the mental by the well and the spiritualby Jesus. Up until this time in humanhistory very few people had barelyevolved to the mental level as presented inKingdom Two of the Kingdoms ofConsciousness Chart. In this story, Jesusopens a whole new door in consciousnessby announcing that “living water” couldbring forth the promise of eternal life inGod as represented in Kingdom Four ofthe chart.

However, it’s important to point out thathe said people would have to ddddoooosomething to realize this promise. Theywould have to worship in Spirit and inTruth. In other words, something wouldhave to be brought forth from withineach person to participate as recipients ofthis promise. Jewish tradition, throughGod’s Covenant with the Israelites,focused on what God was going toprovide for and give to the Jews as the“chosen” people. Now, Jesus is sayingthat each person has to be individually

responsible in order to receive the gifts ofGod. It represents the move from worshipin the outer at the Temple in Jerusalem toworship as an inner experience in the“holy temple” of one’s own being.

�The soul is tied to the senses but seeks theknowledge that can only come from themind. On the spiritual journey, a personmust penetrate through the mentalrealm to reach the highest ideals ofTruth. The rational mind can only takeus to the door way of Truth. It’s the voiceof intuition that encourages us to stepforward into the void that the “holyjumping off place” takes us to--over andover again. Thus, Spirit is ‘beyond belief’for beliefs operate only through mentalawareness. Working at the mental levelchanges things for this life but truespiritual realization lives in the soul foreternity. Again, remember that back ofeverything that our senses tell us andback of everything our minds believe isthe Truth.

I believe that we can only know fully whowe are in the awareness of the indwellingChrist, the activity of God in us. It is here



that we are “born again” to ourselves inthe Light and Love of Christ. The “livingwaters” of Christ Consciousness purifiesour souls from the attachments of thesenses and releases our minds from errorthoughts and mental blocks so that wecan live free in Christ. Thus, we fulfill thedeclaration of St. Paul when he wrote,“Christ in you, the hope of Glory.”(Colossians 1:27)

JJJJeeeessssuuuussss RRRReeeevvvveeeeaaaalllliiiinnnngggg HHHHiiiimmmmsssseeeellllffff aaaassss CCCChhhhrrrriiiisssstttt::::What’s amazing about this story is thatJesus reveals that he is the long promisedmessiah to an unknown “foreign”woman. She was certainly a mostunlikely candidate to receive Jesus’ selfconfession as the Messiah. Her name isnever given. In fact, she appears to be a“broken” woman who was several timesdivorced. In addition, it’s strange that shehad traveled alone at midday to use awell that was a good distance from hervillage.

The appearance of the Risen Christ toMary Magdelene in the garden outsideof the tomb is similar to what Jesus doeswith the Samaritan woman. He picksMary for his first resurrectionappearance rather than any of thedisciples. Mary’s history is also that of a“broken” woman. As with the Samaritanwoman, he approaches her

at a time when she is alone and not withthe disciples or other women followers.(Luke 20:10-18)

So I ask, “What is similar in these twowomen that Jesus reveals the mostsignificant facts about himself and hisministry?”

If we accept that they were both ‘broken’women, we can see that they werevulnerable but also open and receptive toJesus’ message. Also, they were bothwomen. Again, it was highly unusual fora woman to be seen alone with a manwho was not her husband or part of herimmediate family. How is it that Jesusselected these two women instead of histrusted disciples for the revelation of thereal nature of his mission on earth?

Is it that Christ can only be revealedthrough the feminine soul nature of ourbeing? Is it that the indwelling Christ canonly be birthed in the womb of thesoul...the home of each person’s femininenature? Is that we duplicate MotherMary’s Love when the feminine soul in usopens to birth the Light of Christ? Is itthat the yielding feminine nature is theonly aspect of ourselves that can fullyreceive something that is greater than thepowers of our mental reasoning. I notonly ‘believe’ this but I ‘feel’ it from theheart of my being. ❧

� PPPPeeeerrrrssssoooonnnnaaaallll AAAApppppppplllliiiiccccaaaattttiiiioooonnnn �

The Universal I AM presence of God be-came individualized as Christ throughJesus. The Word that was present at thebeginning (the I AM, the Absolute, theCreative Process of Life itself) was nowmade flesh and filled with Grace andTruth. (John 1:14) The Universal had

become individualized. The I AM hadcome to earth. And this is what Jesus an-nounced to the Samaritan woman. Theactual reality of this revelation foreverchanged time and lifted humanity to awhole new level of evolution. I waschanged, my life was changed, when I



first became aware that the I AM of Godwas a Living Presence and, as such,existed in me.

Since then, I have come to know thatChrist is the source of the “living waters”of God that flow within me. Again andagain, I return to these waters forpurification and renewal. These watersare where the changeless reality of Godmeets my own inner spirit.

I have discovered that I can never enterthese blessed waters if I am filled withpride or if I am harboring judgments oraccusations about others or myself. My“knees must be bent” in consciousness toapproach this inner temple of my beingwhere Christ flows as the waters ofguidance, support, direction, protection,supply and peace. It is only through suchhumility that I can know the awe of beingembraced by the “most high.”

Christ is God’s gracious gift to humanity.Eternal life is the promise that came to uswhen Christ entered humanity throughthe person of Jesus.

Today, I am the woman at thewell....divorced, broken, uncertain andoften feeling like a foreigner in my earthlybody. Because I am her, the gift that wasgiven to her from Jesus is continuallybeing given to me from the Christ of mybeing. And my responsibility, or “calling”if you will, is to be that place, thatopening, through which Christ in mebrings and invites others to the well ofliving waters within their very ownbeings.

The journey to the deep well of livingwaters takes place through my dailydedicated spiritual practice. This is theplace and the time where Jesus’ voicecontinually comforts me with those sweetwords.....

The purpose of the ‘70 x 7 Forgiveness Process’ is to dispel the ‘errors of our flesh.’

PPPPrrrriiiinnnncccciiiipppplllleeee::::

The first step in the spiritual purification process is to dispel the ‘illusions of the mind.’ This isaccomplished with relative ease simply by ‘changing our conscious mind’ to bring our thinkinginto alignment with the Principles of Truth.

The next step is to change the subconscious, or carnal mind that is associated with our flesh. Thisis a far more difficult process since this aspect of our being is highly resistant to change of anykind. Therefore, it requires great persistence to bring about a meaningful change in the carnalmind. One reason is that our subconscious nature is very clever when it comes to protecting itselffrom change. Consequently, it will allow you to perform all sorts of spiritual practices right up tothe point where change is immanent. Then it sends forth all sorts of very logical reasons to stop.Furthermore, these reasons will also be accompanied by feelings that support the suggestion tostop. Some typical responses are:

“That should be enough for now.” � “I’ll do some more later.” � “I better not overdo it.”

“Maybe I’m doing this wrong.” � “This will never work.” � “I’m too tired right now.”

“I’ve got too many other things to do right now.”

The ‘70 x 7 Forgiveness Process’ is intended to help us break through our resistance to change thatwe normally encounter in our spiritual practices. If you engage the practice described below, youwill quickly become aware of places that your carnal mind is resisting change. The practice isbased on the following scriptural suggestion:

Then Peter came to Jesus and said, “Lord, how often should I forgive my brother when he sinsagainst me? Seventy times?” Jesus then said, “Not just seven times, but seventy times seven.”

TTTThhhheeeennnn,,,, select a spiritual practice that you intend to use to bring about this change.Preferably, it should involve some form of bodily movement.

FFFFiiiinnnnaaaallllllllyyyy,,,, perform 70 repetitions of this practice each day for 7 days. All of the 70 rep-etitions required for each day should be performed in a single practice session. Thispractice does not have to be done on seven consecutive days. Simply do it for sevendays as nearly consecutive as possible. (The mind’s favorite trick is to get you to quit if youmiss a consecutive day.)

One of the traditional tools for keeping count of repetitions during spiritualpractice is the use of a string of beads, such as a ‘Rosary’ in the west or a ‘Mala’in the east. This method becomes somewhat impracticable for any practice thatinvolves the movement of the body, such as ‘Posture Prayers.’ An excellentmodern alternative is a small hand held device called a ‘Tally Counter,” aspictured to the left. They are available at almost all Stationary and Office Supplystores. Other alternative ways to count are to use your fingers, or better yetdetermining approximately how it would take you to do 70 repetitions of yourpractice and then just use a clock, watch or timer.

Now,look down into your heart and notice how you are feeling. Record thesefeelings in the slightly rounded boxes at the level of the oranges on thetree, where it says: “This is how I felt.” No matter what your originalemotional reaction might have been, at the deepest level of your beingthere will always be some gratitude if you can find the wisdom within theexperience.

One way to do this is to ask yourself the question: “How am Idifferent as a result of this experience?" Enter this information in the fullyrounded boxes at the level of the lemons, where it says: “This is what Ilearned.” What you have learned can vary from a skill, such aschanging a tire, to a personal quality, such as self-confidence.

Try to identify the Divine Ideal, or Principle,that is associated with the experience you have had in the world. To as-sist you, there is a partial listing of some of these Principles across thetop of the page. You will also find that the appropriate principle may beclosely related to the feelings you previously identified. Enter thisPrinciple in the cloud at the top of the page.
