OPENLANDS ANNUAL REPORT
2017
advocate
protect
In 2017 Openlands completed a strategic plan to guide our work in communities and across our region. Over the next five years we will advance our long-term goal of an interconnected and climate-resilient system of land and water throughout the Chicago region of sufficient scale and ecological health that is enjoyed, advocated for, and protected every day by a broad and deep coalition of residents and organizations.

OPEN LAN DS 2017 1 9 AN N UAL R EP O RT
The Chicago region, our home, stretches over three states with one of the most complicated geopolitical landscapes in the nation. By contrast, plants and animals—and the ecosystems they rely on—do not follow these political boundaries and need a champion with a region-wide vision.
OUR REGIONAL VISION
Our vision for the region is a landscape that includes a vast network of land and water trails, tree-lined streets, and intimate public gardens within easy reach of every city dweller. It includes parks and preserves large enough to provide natural habitat and to give visitors a sense of the vast prairies, woodlands, and wetlands that were here before the cities.

WE ARE COMMITTED TO PROTECTING PRIORITY LANDSCAPES WHERE WE WILL BRING
FOCUS AND RESOURCES TO PROTECT LAND AND WATER HEALTH.
OPEN LAN DS 2017 2 5 AN N UAL R EP O RT
We work within the City of Chicago, including creating green schoolyards, planting trees and teaching people to care for them, and opening the eyes of children to the nature around them. We are committed to the healthy future of the Forest Preserves of Cook County. We are working with preserve staff to implement the Next Century Conservation Plan, a hundred-year vision for the preserves. The plan calls for increased ecological restoration, land acquisition, engaging the citizens of the county, and sustained leadership. Openlands demonstrated that ecological restoration yields economic benefits eight times greater than the investment.
COOK COUNTY
Our commitment to Lake County, manifest at the Openlands Lakeshore Preserve, has increased exponentially. Following years of successful collaboration, local conserva- tion organization Conserve Lake County has merged into Openlands. In addition to the two organizations’ missions being closely aligned, this merger has multiple benefits, including increased capacity, added efficiencies, expanded expertise in planning and restoration, a deepened team of professionals supporting conservation work in Lake County, and continued leadership in ecological restoration at the Liberty Prairie Reserve.
LAKE COUNTY
OPEN LAN DS 2017 27 AN N UAL R EP O RT
We led the 1995 delegation that dedicated 19,000 acres of the former Joliet Arsenal in Will County to become the first National Tallgrass Prairie. Since its inception, Openlands has partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to expand, restore, and connect Midewin to the surrounding globally significant landscapes. With the growth of neighboring industries, we have committed to engage all interests to ensure that new development, highways, and other infrastructure complements, rather than destroys, this part of our region’s natural heritage.
PRAIRIE PARKLANDS MACROSITE/ MIDEWIN NATIONAL TALLGRASS PRAIRIE
HACKMATACK NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge was established along the Illinois/Wisconsin border in 2012 as a mosaic of protected lands and water that provide ample habitat for wildlife, recreation and education opportunities for people, and economic support for local communities. Since then, Openlands has worked to build the refuge and protect its ecosystems through land acquisition and restoration projects at multiple sites. By the end of 2017, the refuge had swelled from a dream to almost 1,000 permanently protected acres and growing.

YOU CAN BE AN ADVOCATE FOR NATURE
You can become a certified TreeKeeper, joining 2,000 other volunteers to care for trees in Chicago and the surrounding region. In 2017, we planted our 5,000TH tree since 2013—that's more than one tree per day!
You can make your voice heard. In 2017, hundreds of Openlands supporters contacted local, state, and federal elected officials to advocate for nature.
You can inspire children. In 2017, 110 volunteers helped 1,300 Chicago Public School students learn about birds in their neighborhoods and at nearby natural areas.

You can paddle on our region’s waterways from the Chicago River to the Little Calumet River to the Fox River. For more than 50 years, Openlands has partnered with many organizations to ensure our waterways are clean, safe, and accessible to the public. In 2017, in addition to multiple paddling events and workshops, we launched PaddleIllinoisWaterTrails.org, an interactive online guide to our region’s paddling opportunities.

OPEN LAN DS 2017 37 AN N UAL R EP O RT
In the Chicago region, climate change means unusually intense weather events: winters with deeper and deeper quantities of snow, springs with torrential and soaking rainfall, and summers scorched with drought and heat. Our efforts to preserve open space and to promote an ecologically healthy region have also directly supported its adaptability. Our work has had a valuable impact on creating climate resilient and livable communities.
OPEN LAN DS 2017 39 AN N UAL R EP O RT
Nature-based solutions are fundamental to fighting climate change. Restored grasslands and healthy forests remove carbon from the atmosphere. Trees provide shade in and cool the air of “heat islands,” parts of cities that are hotter than surrounding areas. Green spaces in schoolyards and neighborhoods are designed to help reduce flooding. And farmland, trails, parks, and preserves link our region together in a vibrant web of green that allows plant and animal species to move and adapt.
Dear Friends,
For over 50 years Openlands has inspired successive generations of people in the Chicago region to enjoy, advocate for, and steward nature right here where we live. Drawing on those decades of experience, we realize maximum impact in our efforts. Facilitating effective programs, we forge partnerships that endure through multiple generations. Advancing innovative solutions for our entire region, we become a national model.
In the Chicago region, we are bound together by commerce and by politics, but the most important connection is the web of green—trails, preserves, parks, gardens, and backyards—that we at Openlands are committed to strengthening.
Every year, we work to make that web stronger. In 2017, we planted our 5,000TH tree since 2013, added another 1,000 acres to Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge, helped to pass state-level legislation to improve the health
of natural areas, and proved that restoring a landscape to ecological health in Cook County yields economic benefits eight times greater than the investment.
In late 2017, the Openlands Board of Directors adopted our new strategic plan. We are excited by the strategic priorities identified in the plan and look forward to the next great five years of Openlands.
Conserve Lake County, a county-wide land trust, merged into Openlands. The merger creates multiple benefits for conservation in Lake County and throughout the region. These include increased capacity to do vital, efficient work and expanded expertise in planning, land protection, and restoration. The merger became official on January 1, 2018 when Conserve Lake County programs, properties, members, and two staff members became part of Openlands.
As we look back on this past year, our attention is drawn forward: our successes and longevity are defined by a

perseverance and a resolve to protect and care for the open spaces of our region. Guided by our new strategic plan and in collaboration with our colleagues and existing partners, our work raises the threshold of hope for the years ahead.
We thank you for your generous and unwavering support and for taking the long view with Openlands in 2017. We look forward to strengthening our partnership for a more resilient future.
Sincerely,
Carrie C. McNally Chair, Board of Directors
