Enjoy the calm before the storm,

That only Reno can offer.

When faced with capturing the attention of rodeo fans working their way through the many rodeo based ads in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo souvenir program, the MAP team decided to try a new tactic in their advertising. Since this audience is rodeo savvy and expects breathtaking action at the Reno Rodeo, we tease them with what makes our rodeo unique - our destination. The out-of-town market gets a glimpse of beautiful Lake Tahoe, gaming actions, and more, all centered around the Reno Rodeo. This differentiates us from the others.

I’m sure most of you know about the march that Reno Rodeo had with the Washoe County Sheriff’s office to show our support for the Las Vegas shooting. The march went very well, and I want to thank Violet Richards and Tonya Marini for putting everything together. I also want to thank the Sierra Nevada Gymkhana Club for

their support in carrying the American, Nevada, and Reno Rodeo Flags. I was informed that $1905.00 was generously donated by our Reno Rodeo Membership, Thank You.

The 2018 Budget Process has been completed, so Chairmen can get started putting their committees together. I want to thank the Finance Committee for all their hard work for putting together a workable budget for 2018. Others I want to thank that put in a lot of time helping put this year’s budget together are George, Denise, Melissa, Alicia, and Mike. A lot of long hours were put in by the five of them.

November brings the Ram Wilderness Circuit Finals in Heber City, Utah. Myself, Mike, Craig, George, and Miss Reno Rodeo, Jennifer Fisk, will be traveling to Heber City to receive the

Large Outdoor Rodeo Award for 2017. Reno Rodeo is not only the Jacket Sponsor for the Circuit Finals, but Reno Rodeo also sponsors the Champion Bull Riders' Trophy Saddle and Bull Riders' Championship Buckle.

As you know, the Holiday Dinner is coming up November 17th, at the Nugget. Please RSVP so Alicia can get the head count for the food. Hopefully it will prove to be an enjoyable evening for all.

The Executive Committee will be headed to Las Vegas for the PRCA Convention, as well as the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the first week of December. Meetings are set for some of our National Sponsors and a couple of Specialty Acts. It will be a working trip to watch some of the performances of the Junior NFR Qualifiers that we are thinking about bringing to Reno the final Friday and Saturday of Reno Rodeo.

Our Strategic Plan is in motion – working on staying at the RSLEC grounds and thinking about building a new outdoor arena, indoor arena, parking garage, and new stalls facility. Looks good on paper, now Reno Rodeo needs to stay focused to make it happen.

I hope I see you all at the Holiday Dinner. Remember, it’s because of you, that Reno Rodeo will be a success. “IT’S A TRADITION!"

IT'S A TRADITION!

The sad and unfortunate event that took place in Las Vegas earlier this month really took a toll on the hearts of those across Nevada. I was able to read a prayer, written with the help of Mark Sutton, honoring those who experienced such a world turning tragedy and as we marched to the BELIEVE sign, it was touching to see Reno Rodeo step up and show support to the families that were so deeply affected. Home means Nevada, and as we gathered beneath the Reno Arch this was a great reminder that the sport of rodeo is a big family, ready to bring comfort and love to anyone in need.

The last few weeks have be nothing short of more fun and adventure. I had a great time at my first few luncheons and look forward to them each month so I can visit and catch up with everyone.

I’m not sure where my strange love of public speaking came from, but it’s been put to work! The last month I have been helping the previous Miss Gold Country Pro Rodeo, Sydney, prepare for the Miss Grand National Rodeo Queen pageant – working on speech delivery, interview questions, and even driving down the hill for some joint horsemanship practices. I have been keeping my own knowledge and skills up to date as well! During all this free time, I have pulled Mr. Buc out of retirement from his Reading Round-Up days. Thanks to Jim Lindsey, I now have a handsome, trusty steed for the Nevada Day Parade. We, Buc and I, have enjoyed soaking up the last few weeks of warm weather while taking long walks on the beach of Washoe Lake.

I am eagerly looking forward to the next few months and all that’s to come!

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

George CombsGeneral Manager

I hope every one of you has attended at least one luncheon or dinner with your membership and have been enjoying them. It is a challenge to keep the event fun, fresh, and worthwhile. If you have any great rodeo joke or trivia suggestions, please drop us a note. Remember this month of November is a dinner, not

a lunch, to be held on the 17th, at 6:00 p.m., in the newly renovated Rose Ballroom at the Nugget. Make sure you get your RSVP in. I hope everyone was pleased with the new pins awarded at the last luncheon. If you were not in attendance, you missed out on the recipients of wrangler pins, Member pins, and Director pins. Also, we gave out pins for years of service to Reno Rodeo; 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 year, and even one 45-year pin. If those recipients of pins feel there is a mistake, please come by the office and talk to me. This was not an easy task and we are not perfect but with your help it will be awesome.

The first of this month will be the circuit finals in Heber City Utah. We will be representing Reno Rodeo, plus sponsoring a saddle and Buckle for the bull riding Champion. One other part

of our sponsorship this year is that all 250 plus contestants will receive a jacket, and our Reno Rodeo logo will be on it. This is a great event to be noticed at.

This Thanksgiving week Shannon and I will be heading back to Idaho to visit with the family there, and check up on her Dad’s double knee replacement progress. Due to the NFR in Las Vegas starting a full week later than in the past, we will be able to visit then, as well as attend our grandson’s 6th birthday. Many of the delegates we will be sending down to Las Vegas will not arrive until after Dec. 3rd. this year.

We will once again be hosting a Reno Rodeo hospitality room at the South Point hotel. However, we will not be participating in the Cowboy Way row with a vendor booth. We have chosen to look for other ways to promote Reno Rodeo. This will allow us to expand our hosting services in the suite for more delegates, other rodeo guests and RR fans.

The budget is completed, Holiday Dinner plans completed, and the Heber City trip is about in the bag. The NFR flights, hotels, and convention are booked – meetings to schedule almost done.

All that seems to be left for this November is this:

“We wish all of you a very wonderful Thanksgiving!!”

COUNTDOWN TO 100

The stories for the Count Down to 100 are excerpts from A History – The First 80 Years, by Guy Clifton, Edited by Bill Price.

If ever a Nevada political figure embraced the Reno Rodeo, it was Rex Bell, the state’s lieutenant governor from 1954 until 1962.

Bell, a Hollywood film star of the 1920s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, was an avid supporter of the Reno Rodeo, participating in the parade every year he was in office, and being honored as the grand marshal for two years.

“He loved the Reno Rodeo,” said his son Rex Bell, Jr., of Las Vegas. “That’s why he always participated. He was always in the parade. He always looked forward to that.”

Bell was an avid horseman. In Hollywood he worked with western stars Tom Mix and Buck Jones before becoming one of film’s leading men himself. In 1931, he married film star Clara Bow, Hollywood’s “It Girl” and the most popular female film star of the era.

He left the film business in 1944 after appearing in more than 50 movies. He and Bow settled on their huge Nevada cattle ranch, in Searchlight.

In 1954, Bell, a Republican, was elected lieutenant governor by a wide margin, and re-elected by a landslide in 1958, despite a

sweep by Democrats in other statewide offices.

He presided over the state senate in colorful western dress, and his flashing smile and friendly manner helped establish

him as one of Nevada’s most popular politicians.

In 1962, he was the Nevada Republican Party’s choice to challenge Governor Grant Sawyer for the state’s top office. On July 4, shortly after a party fund-raiser in Las Vegas, Bell suffered a heart and died. His death was mourned throughout Nevada, and Hollywood, by Republicans and Democrats alike.

Honorary pallbearers at his service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles included Richard Nixon, Gene Autry, and Tex Ritter, among others.

At the 1962 Nevada Day parade, a float commemorated his memory. It included his famed silver saddle and trademark white hat

– relics familiar to anyone who had seen him in a Reno Rodeo parade.

“The Reno Rodeo was one of his favorites,” his son said. “ He enjoyed seeing the people he knew in Reno and the cowboys he knew from around the country.”

WE ARE THE RENO RODEO - JOSH IVESON

Josh Iveson has been a part of the Reno Rodeo Association for 26 years. As a high school student, Josh attended his first Reno Rodeo when he and some friends were fortunate enough to score some box seat tickets for a performance in 1989. Once he had personally witnessed the Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West, he decided he had to be a part of it. “I was impressed with how great a job they did with such a large volunteer organization,” Josh said. Shortly after that, Joe Martin helped him through the application process, and Josh served as a Wrangler from 1991 to 1994, becoming a Member in ’95.

Born and raised in Reno, Iveson is a third generation Nevadan, who graduated from Reno High School in 1990. After graduation, Josh went on to study at UNR but eventually rejoined his dad in the construction business. “My family has always been in the construction business. In fact, it was my grandpa who helped to build Reno High,” Josh explained.

Iveson also did a two-year stint working for Alamo car rental as a production manager. It was there that he got his first taste of law enforcement. “We had some cars that were accumulating 500 some miles on them over several weekends when they hadn’t been rented out. Joe Martin put me in touch with the right people who helped us figure out that the cars were being taken out to run drugs back from California. We eventually caught up with them and got the problem corrected,” Iveson stated. Shortly after that incident, Josh expressed an interest in law enforcement to Joe Martin, who suggested he apply to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. He has now served as a Deputy with the county for the past 21

years.

Josh has been able to utilize the knowledge he has gained as a county sheriff into his role as the Chairman of the Security Committee, a job he has held since 1998. Josh has also served on the Cattle Drive, Parade, and Executive Committees. Additionally, he has served as a Director of the Association for almost 20 years. He has received multiple Awards of Merit during his rodeo career including three different merit knives, as well as the coveted merit buckle that he was awarded in 2001.

Josh, and his wife of 23 years, Jennifer, have two children, Jacob who is 19, and Julia is 17. As one might expect, both of his kids have been coming to the rodeo since they were very young. “It has been nice because I have always been able to bring the kids along. They have always been great about spending time down here helping wherever they can,” Josh said.

Josh always puts “family first” but also has multiple interests outside of work and the rodeo. “I enjoy hunting, fishing, and shooting. Anything I can do outside is special for me. I’m also a

‘gear guy,’ and I like checking out new types of improved gear for the sheriff’s office,” Josh noted.

Doug Nicholson Manpower Chair

NOMINATING/MANPOWER

The Manpower Committee reviewed each of the Wranglers who were potentially eligible to become Members of the Reno Rodeo Association and submitted 102 names to the Executive Committee for its review and recommendation.  Based on their review all 102 names were brought forward to the Board of Directors for final approval.  At its monthly meeting on Thursday, October 19th, the Board unanimously approved all 102 candidates.  Invitation letters were sent to the candidates who have until November 1st to exercise their option to become a Member.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

It takes at least two years of committed involvement before a Wrangler can become a Member.

If you have the opportunity to welcome one of the 102 new members, please do so. They are sure to continue to add their skills and enthusiasms to the mix. Our volunteers are the best anywhere, and we all know it!

JEN FISK – MISS RENO RODEO 2018

Jen Fisk is YOUR rodeo ambassador and is here to serve the association. If you are interested in scheduling her for an appearance, please contact Ann Quinn (775) 530-2235.

Clint ThiesseLegacy Committee Chair

LEGACY COMMITTEE

The Legacy Committee has continued meeting twice or more a month since the past Rodeo. As previously indicated, we have been concentrating on a “plan” that will work with our current home. After several iterations, modifications, and adjustments, we believe we have a plan that would not only meet the needs of the Reno

Rodeo, but works for a year round, top of the line, equestrian and livestock event facility. It would include a new up to date outdoor arena, a second indoor arena attached to the existing arena with a huge exhibit area above, an attached office/museum/event facility, and a parking structure over stalls. The intent would be to have total up to date utility, plumbing and ADA compliance. We believe we are near a point where we can seek Architectural Statements of Qualification for selecting an architect to help us with a final conceptual plan that flows and works with our constraints; and with preparing architectural renderings for future use in our planning and funding endeavors.

In the past we have discussed the potential of purchasing or leasing the Manha properties around Reno Rendering for helping meet our parking needs. George and I met with our realtor, Reed Simmons, and the Manha family on-site to review the site and this possibility. The site visit was very positive towards that goal. Rich Pettinari, George and myself then met with the City of Reno engineering and planning staff to discuss zoning issues or any other constraints. That was when the idea went south, at least for the time being. The current master plan designation of “open space” over a large portion would not allow much of anything including parking. Evans Creek, which crosses the property, is Army Corps jurisdiction and would require federal permits for any alteration. The remaining property has zoning that will

not allow open parking except for an on-site coincidental use; thus, providing parking for the facility across the street would not be an acceptable use. To make things worse, the City is going through a new master plan process for this part of the City. So even if we could get a variance for the current constraints, that variance may be voided under the new master plan designations. Thus, it would not behoove Reno Rodeo to pursue this property, at least until the new master plan and zoning are in place.

We also briefly discussed the church and vacant property across Sutro. The Reno Housing Authority is well into planning a Senior Apartment Complex and is close to purchasing the Church property, which would be part of the complex. Due to its close proximity to the Senior Center, we do not feel it is feasible to convince the Housing Authority to abandon their plans and sell the property to Reno Rodeo.

On a positive note, the University Dean of Agriculture has once again expressed a desire to work with us in a joint use of the property across Wells. We requested a direct meeting with the University President to discuss this possibility which he indicated he would pursue. We will keep you informed on this front.

The next Legacy meetings scheduled are October 26 (which will have happened before you see this), November 9, and December 20. Our meetings are fewer due to the Holidays and the NFR. All of our meeting dates are posted on RIDE and anyone can come to our meetings and participate.

MAGGIE GREEN REPORTED:

I am not sure who in RR knows of the backgrounds of Robert Lefever, and his mom, Martharuth (aka MR). MR was a Red Cross Disaster Control Coordinator when they lived in California.  Son Robert was also involved in disaster control with the Red Cross.

I can’t remember when Robert headed over to the Napa area to help with the fires, but he has been gone a couple of weeks.  I think he is due back the end of the month.  Anyway, he took time off of his job with the State to help out.

CONGRATULATIONS

Past President Wayne Lund and his son, Wylie Lund, won the Buckles for the #4 Roping at the Carson Valley Roping Jackpot on August 26. Furthermore, he just missed winning a saddle by a hair!

MONTHLY LUNCHEONS

It becomes wasteful when the office staff does not have an accurate count for Reno Rodeo Association lunches and dinners. Not knowing how many members will attend an event can cause problems with budget and seating space.

To help ensure that the count is correct, the Board of Directors set the following rules.

If you do not RSVP, but show up, you will be charged $40, as well as having to wait for available seating.

If you do RSVP, do not call to cancel, and do not show up, you will be invoiced for $40.

If you need to cancel, please call and let us know.

Guest price is $40 for each event.

OCTOBER LUNCHEON AWARDS PRESENTED

During the October Luncheon at the Silver Legacy, Grant Dalen was presented with a plaque commemorating his 1st Place win in the 2017 Reno Rodeo Parade Multiple Horse Drawn Hitch division. The Reno Rodeo Parade Committee, headed by Colleen Cohan, gives awards based on the judges recommendation.

Scolari’s received a Silver Spur Award which was accepted by Jim Minor. Scolari's has been a main sponsor of the Reno Rodeo for several years, selling our Carnival wristbands. Their partnership provides a huge contribution to the Reno Rodeo.

2012 Reno Rodeo Poster – Rowdy by RowdyOver the years in my career at Reno Rodeo, I was lucky enough to serve as a representative to the PRCA convention and NFR eleven years in a row, from 2002 through 2012. All of the early years, I never went to Cowboy Christmas. Finally, in about 2008, I was coerced into going and it was the first time I saw any Rowdy Barry artwork. I was impressed with the bright color on black background.

Rowdy and his wife, Laura Lee, were icons of Reno Rodeo, Rowdy being a longtime bullfighter and Laura Lee the Wrangler Girl in the arena during timed events. They were truly part of the Reno Rodeo family.

In April 2009, I was elected for the presidential chairs and at the 2009 Cowboy Christmas I asked Rowdy if he would be my artist for the 2012 Poster. He said he would be honored. This was also the time frame

that Rowdy was replaced as a bullfighter at Reno, so my only opportunity to see him was at the NFR and convention. In 2010 I checked with him and he was still planning to do it.

Finally it was the 2011 NFR, during my presidential year, and Rowdy and I had not discussed any particulars about the poster. (I did have a back-up plan – Alyse Jenkins pencil drawing art which ended up being the cover and event title pages of the 2012 Program.) Rowdy assured me he was going to do the art and asked when I needed it. I said “Pretty darn soon. It is December and we should have it on the street by April.” He then asked what I wanted for a subject. I told him I would like Rowdy Barry bullfighting by Rowdy Barry. His response was “I don’t do art of myself.” I asked if he would make an exception. I thought Rowdy by Rowdy would be unique. Plus it would always be a part of Reno Rodeo, our longtime bullfighter honored on a poster. He said he would think about it or come up with something.

In mid-January I called Rowdy to check on the progress. He

said he had been quite busy and had not started anything but it was on his list. Then early one morning at work, I got a call from Rowdy. He said it was nearly done. He had gotten inspired the night before and the pieces came into place. He'd started it the early evening, and by 4:30 that morning it was nearly complete. He told me he had a couple of touch-ups to make but would send me a picture of it in a couple of days.

A couple days later I did get the email, colored chalk artwork on a black background

– Rowdy by Rowdy. The original hangs on my office wall.
