�is striking glass building was conceived by Yoshio Taniguchi, one of Japan’s leading architects. �e two baths, one looking towards the lake and the distant mountains, the other onto the forest, are switched between genders every day.Open: 6:00 to 22:00 Café: 10:00 to 17:00 (Closed on �ursday)

Yamashiro Onsen’s public bath is a 100% pure hot spring (no cool water added). �e inside walls of either bath room display hand-painted tiles by 28 of the area’s �nest Kutani ceramic artists.Open: 6:00 to 22:00Closed on every fourth Wednesday morning.

Kitaoji Rosanjin, a famous multifaceted artist stayed and worked in this cozy and beautiful cottage for a few weeks around 1915, beginning to work there as a potter, a �eld he would ultimately become famous in. �is splendid late samurai house was moved from Kanazawa to Yamanaka Onsen during the Taisho period (1912-1926). �is typical Taisho period western-style building was constructed in 1918 and registered in 1991 as a “traditional building for protection”. It now hosts a collection of artworks by the famous TV personality, actor and painter Kataoka Tsurutaro.Open: 9:00 to 16:30Closed on December 31st

Located in front of the railway station, this museum permanently displays a wide range of art and craft works from renowned artists of the area. �is museum displays through permanent and temporary exhibitions a large collection of works that embody the rich tradition of the Kutani porcelain. Besides the main gallery lie the remains of the oldest climbing kiln from the time of the Kutani revival. Matsuo Basho was the most famous poet of the Edo period and a master of Haiku. An untiring traveler, he roamed the roads of northern Japan at the end of his life, a journey which would give birth to a poetry masterpiece: “�e narrow road to the deep north”. �is building recalls through many documents Basho’s passage here while displaying �ne works from local Yamanaka lacquerware artists.Open: 9:00 to 16:30Closed on Wednesdays

Elegantly making use of the region’s �nest crafts such as lacquerware, porcelain and stained glasses, this is one of Yamashiro Onsen’s two public hot spring baths. �e Kosoyu was rebuilt exactly the way it was during the Meiji era. Although not equipped with usual separate spaces for shower, it is still a place worth going for relaxing and soaking in a nostalgic scenery.Open: 6:00 to 22:00

�e name of Yamanaka Onsen’s public bath, Kikunoyu (chrysanthemum hot water) refers to both a haiku poem by Matsuo Basho, one of the town’s most famous visitors, and to the healing properties of the waters, as the chrysanthemum symbolizes eternity according to the Chinese folklore. Men and women’s baths are in two separate elegant buildings facing each other. �e men’s bath displays an interesting narrative illustration of the town’s history. Open: 6:45 to 22:30

Kitamaebune was a trading vessels route along the western coasts of Japan that thrived during the Edo period, when Japan was almost completely isolated from the outside world. Connecting Osaka to the northern parts of Hokkaido, this shipping route gave birth to a very distinctive culture and life-style which is narrated in this museum through a large collection of documents.Open: 9:00 to 16:30

Set in a beautiful wooden house from the Meiji period, this museum is dedicated to the life and works of Kyuya Fukata (1903-1971). A native of Daishoji, writer and mountain enthusiast, Kyuya Fukata wrote a very popular book among Japanese mountain lovers and hikers; 100 famous mountains of Japan, a personal selection on criteria of grace, history and originality. �e town of Hashitate was once a port of call for the Kitamaebune vessels. Conveniently set half-way of the road connecting Osaka to Hokkaido, many shipping company owners built splendid estates in this area. Zorokuen embodies the particular architectural style of the remaining Kitamaebune residences. �is zen temple was founded in honour of Maeda Toshiha-ru, the �rst of the dynasty of feudal lords who ruled the area during the Edo period (1600-1868). �e temple’s adjoining garden still hosts the gravestones for each one of them. Cherry trees in the spring and bush clovers in the fall o�er splendid sceneries to the visitors.Open: 9:00 to 16:00

Matsuo Basho stayed in this zen temple and wrote a famous haiku inspired by the willow tree in the garden. In addition to the splendid main building, the temple is also famous for its 517 small sculptures depicting “rakan”, the disciples and followers of Buddha in a detached lodge.
