7What a day!Alison Rogers lCGi walked away with the title of Groomer of the Year for the second time at the 2012 British Dog Grooming Championship on sunday 28 october, winning with a Purebred scissor Bichon Frise and a clipped/stripped springer spaniel. The runner-up was linda Barker, with third place taken by Mike Wildman.

With just under 120 competitors, and almost 150 dogs to be groomed,

the competition was the biggest ever in its history. Over 600 visitors to the show soaked up the vibrant atmosphere, watching the variety of classes and display of grooming prowess in the competition ring, as well as picking up bargains from the trade stands.

Groomer of the Year, Alison, on receiving her trophy said: “i’m a bit shocked actually, and in a bit of pain as i only came out of

hospital a week and a half ago! “i wanted to win so that i could semi-retire and concentrate more on showing and grooming abroad. My dogs were brilliant; they didn’t put a foot wrong all day. i’m so proud of them”.

A real triumph this year was the inaugural Student Team Challenge, which saw six grooming school teams competing against each other to take home the BDGA Memorial Trophy. London-based Dog’s Delight were victorious on the day, with the AbbFabb Academy of Dog Grooming Training and Evesham Grooming Academy taking second and third places respectively.

This year’s judges each brought a wide range of experience and expertise to the Kennel Club Building: Joanne Botwood LCGI (Handstrip & Clipped Gundogs/Pot Pourri Scissor); Bill Browne-Cole (Handstrip Non-Gundog/Purebred Scissor), Corinna Verschuren (Clipped Terriers/Poodle Scissor) and Lee Lister (Junior Group).

“The feedback from this year’s show has been really positive and we were thrilled at the record turnout and fantastic atmosphere generated throughout the day,” said Meriel France, Education & Animal Welfare Manager. “With packed seminar rooms, and the trade stands reporting roaring trade, we couldn’t have asked for more”.

LEIGHTON DENTIST WINS TOP INDUSTRY AWARD A Leighton Buzzard dental team has been all smiles this week after its unique education scheme for children was officially recognised and praised at the highest level of the profession. Cherry Trees Dental, which is based on Soulbury Road, won the ‘UK Best Children’s Dental Health Initiative’ accolade at the Private Dentistry Awards, for its scheme that has won praise from dozens of local schools. Representatives from the practice were presented with a trophy during a glittering awards ceremony in London. Dr Debbie Ganguli, practice principal at Cherry Trees, says: “The whole team is over the moon. We were highly commended in this category last year and have worked hard since then to spread the dental health message even further among local children, so it’s fantastic to receive this national recognition.” The scheme is a free service to local schools which promotes dental hygiene in an interesting and informative way, linking to the national curriculum and subjects including history and science. Slide presentations, interactive discussions and children’s goody bags (fully funded by the practice) are included at each event. Nearly 30 local schools and other organisations such as Rainbows, Brownies and Beavers have benefited from the visits made by Debbie and her team. Among the many very positive comments, one head teacher said the visit had “transformed the confidence in children going to the dentist.” The awards judges of the national competition were especially impressed by the team’s innovative ideas such as game show formats that engage and inspire the youngsters and added: “The practice told us that the children must be the real winners of the scheme. However, (in our opinion) the practice’s commendable efforts make them true winners.” Cherry Trees is no stranger to national awards, having scooped the ‘UK Best Community/Charity Project’ last year. To find out more about the scheme, please contact the practice on 01525 384894 or email: [email protected] ends Caption: Jubilant team members from Cherry Trees Dental in Soulbury Road with their national trophy.
