1) Identification of project sites

Ea Kar, DaklakThis hilly district is a transit way for livestock trading from Thailand and Cambodia to HMC.Due to its close location to the growing markets of HMC and other urban centres meat production offers good income opportunities.

Ky Anh, Ha Tinh80% of the population employed in agriculture.Rice based multi-purpose smallholder systems dominate.The growing industrial development opens market opportunities for meat and vegetables




2) Evaluation of actors, linkages, practices and habits related to fodder innovations

• National Research partners: – National Institute of Animal Science

(NIAS), Hanoi – Tay Nguyen University, Daklak

• Implementation & Extension– Local authorities– Provincial stakeholders– National level support

• Baseline survey on smallholder systems in the region• Multi-stakeholder group discussions to identify linkages

Results from stakeholder analyses

• Major stakeholder analyses in 2007 and 2009

– 20 different stakeholders involved in cattle value chain improvement in the area were identified

– Their role in the value chain was analyzed– According to their role they were grouped into 7 major

categories (beneficiaries, decision makers, etc.)– The roles of existing policies and previous projects

were identified




Results from baseline survey

• Baseline survey in 2008-09– Detailed household and land use characterization

(production systems, income, age distribution, gender issues, education)

– Very diverse cropping and livestock systems– Cattle kept for multiple purposes: breeding, draught and

fattening– Mainly extensive, free grazing and low input cut and

carry and gathering systems using local breeds– Consequently high labor requirements– Lack of improved breeding systems




Results from cattle production survey

• Cattle production survey in 2008– Identification of existing cattle production systems:

intensive fattening, intensive cow-calf production, extensive mixed systems

– Survey on feed resource use and feeding practices for each system

– Production performance and options for improvement




Results from RMA

• Rapid Market Appraisal in 2008-09– The market for beef cattle produced in Ea Kar

expanded from local markets only (RMA 2004) to most big cities in South Vietnam: Da Lat, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh.

– The quality of beef from Ea Kar met the trader and customer demands in these new markets.

– The productivity of the production system increased markedly through system change




Results from participatory market study

• Participatory market study in 2009

– Identifying opportunities and creating linkages between producers and other market chain stakeholders

– Resulting in supply contracts

– Detailed livelihood and production system information on community level employing GIS (and FEAST)
