by a comma and a connecting word.• Irene works at the mall, and her brother visits

her store every day.

分詞構句• 分詞構句通常置於句首，但亦可置於句首中或句尾。

• 在分詞構句和主句之間，須加逗點。• A. 主句和副詞子句的主詞相同時。• While I was walking along the street, I came

across him.• = Walking along the street, I came across him.

分詞構句• As I didn’t know what to do, I telephoned to

the police.• = Not knowing what to do, I telephoned to

the police.• After I had seen my brother, I felt much

relieved.• = Having seen my brother, I felt much

relieved.

分詞構句• Though he hadn’t found his key, he still had

the money with him.• = Not having found his key, he still had the

money with him.• . Because the book is written in an easy style,

it has many readers.• = (Being) written in an easy style, the book

has many readers.

分詞構句• B. 主句和副詞子句的主詞不同時。• 此時的”分詞構句”稱為『獨立分詞構

句』。• 1. When school was over, the boys went

home.• = School being over, the boys went home.

分詞構句• As his life was threatened by the secret

police, the human-right activist can’t help escaping from his country.

• = His life (being) threatened by the secret police, the human-right

獨立分詞構句• C. 連接詞 + 分詞構句• 為了明確表示原來引導副詞子句的連接詞

的意義，所以將原本在” 分詞構句”中已去除的”從屬連接詞”予以保留。

• When he speaks English, he often makes mistakes.

• = When speaking English, he often makes mistakes.

獨立分詞構句• • If he is properly encouraged, he will do better.• = If (being) properly encouraged, he will do

better.•

Unit 6 Writing about the Future

• Beginning with the simple future tense:• Be going to: statements and questions• Incorrect: We are going to go to the store in a

few minutes.• Correct: We are going to go to the store in a

few minutes.

• Be going to and Will: Negative• Incorrect: I am going to not talk.• Correct: I am (I’m) not going to talk.• Incorrect: They will not to come to the party.• Correct: They will not (won’t) come to the

party.

Complex Sentences

• One way to combine two sentences into one is to use a connecting word that is part of the sentence. Some of these connecting words are after, before, because, if , although , since, and when. This type of sentence is called a complex sentence.

• Compound Sentence: Joe played tennis, and Vicky watched TV.

Complex Sentence

• Complex sentence: Joe played tennis after Vicky watched TV.

• Here are a few more examples of complex sentences.

• My Mom is going to make dinner when my dad gets home.

• As soon as we get paid, we are going to buy some new clothes.
