By the way…

It is illegal in the U.S. to discriminate on the basis of • Gender, • Race, • Age

Therefore, U.S. resumes typically no longer include photographs or date of birth.

Page 8: English Writing Lecture 8: Resume Workshop John E. Clayton Nanjing University, November 11, 2004

Traditional Resume

• Your resume may be considered for 1 minute or less

• If it is not specific to a particular job or company, it may quickly be discarded

The “scattergun”

approach is not very effective

Page 9: English Writing Lecture 8: Resume Workshop John E. Clayton Nanjing University, November 11, 2004

Better Method: A Focused Resume

“Zero-in” on a particular company, a particular job

• More personal• More sincere (you are no longer saying “I’ll take any job”)• Recruiter can quickly see what your skills and job goals are.

Page 10: English Writing Lecture 8: Resume Workshop John E. Clayton Nanjing University, November 11, 2004

Resume Workshop

• Find your homework: “pool of experience”

• Take out a clean sheet of paper

• Identify a company and position that you might like to apply for

Page 11: English Writing Lecture 8: Resume Workshop John E. Clayton Nanjing University, November 11, 2004

1. Identify Yourself• Put your name,

permanent and campus addresses, permanent and campus phone numbers, and email address prominently at the top of your resume.

• Avoid using a nickname.

• E-mail addresses are acceptable.

2. State Your Objective

• One to three sentence summary of your area of expertise and career interest.

• Relate your existing skills directly to the job you are seeking. Demonstrate what you can do for the company rather than what they can do for you.

Page 14: English Writing Lecture 8: Resume Workshop John E. Clayton Nanjing University, November 11, 2004

Objective Statement

Avoid over-generalized statements: A position allowing me to utilize my

knowledge and expertise in different areas.

Avoid statements that focus only on what a company can do for you:A position where I gain experience in working on biological problems.

Make the statement as specific as possible:

A position which allows me to apply my background in engineering and high performance computing to biological problems.

3. Match Skills to Requirements
