ENGLISH VERBAL TENSES(Tiempos verbales en
inglés)
![Page 2: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
How do we build verbs in English?¿Cómo hacemos los verbos en
castellano?Aunque nos parece que en castellano todo es más fácil, un
estudiante inglés que está intentando aprender castellano te
diría que no, y si no, fíjate:
Spanish
Presente simple del verbo comer:
Yo comoTú comesEl/ella/eso comeNosotros comemosVosotros coméis Ellos comen
¡6 conjugaciones distintas!
English
Present simple of the verb to eat:
I eatYou eatHe/she/it eatsWe eatYou eatThey eat
Only 2 forms!2Cristina Aranda Barandiain

Sin embargo, mirad la diferencia de las preguntas y las negaciones:
Yo comoYo no como
Él bailaÉl no baila
Yo como¿Yo como?
Ella baila¿Ella baila?
¡FACILÍSIMO!
I eatI don’t eat
He dancesHe doesn’t dance
I eatDo I eat?
She dancesDoes she dance?
VERY DIFFICULT!3Cristina Aranda Barandiain
![Page 4: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
CONCLUSIÓNAFIRMATIVAS:Castellano: 6 conjugaciones distintas, 1 o 2 pal.English: 1, 2 ó 3 formas máximo, 1 o 2 palabras
NEGATIVAS:Castellano: le ponemos un NO y nos quedamos tan panchosEnglish: hay que utilizar un AUXILIAR
QUESTIONS:Castellano: con darle un poco de entonación nos valeEnglish: hay que utilizar un AUXILIAR

![Page 5: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
¿QUÉ ES UN AUXILIAR?Un auxiliar es el que nos da auxilio, el
que nos ayuda a algo.
En este caso, es una palabra que nos ayuda a hacer negativas y preguntas
en inglés.
Ya hemos dicho que en castellano con poner un NO en las negativas y con darle un poco de ENTONACIÓN a las
preguntas, nos vale.
Pero en inglés necesitamos algo más, una ayuda, UN AUXILAR.
¿Qué palabras son los auxiliares estos?
5Cristina Aranda Barandiain
![Page 6: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Y vosotros diréis…
¿Pero el DO no era HACER,
el TO BE no era SER O ESTAR
y el HAVE no era TENER?
6Cristina Aranda Barandiain
![Page 7: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
¡EFECTIVAMENTE!
Pero es que, además de significar SER O ESTAR, TENER y HACER, también pueden hacer de auxiliares.
Es decir, que pueden ser 2 COSAS DISTINTAS.
TO DO HACERAUXILIAR (para las formas simples)
TO BE SER O ESTAR
AUXILIAR(para las formas continuas)
TO HAVE TENERAUXILIAR(para las formas perfectas)

![Page 9: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Ahora que ya sabemos lo que es un auxiliar y para qué lo necesitamos, vamos a ver qué
TIEMPOS VERBALES tenemos.
PASADO PRESENTE FUTURO
CASTELLANO: tenemos formas para los tres planos del tiempo:
TRABAJÉ TRABAJO TRABAJARÉ
ENGLISH: tenemos formas SÓLO para el pasado y presente:
I WORKED I WORK -
(El futuro en inglés necesita otras formas de expresión (WILL, GOING TO, MIGHT…) que ya veremos más adelante)
9Cristina Aranda Barandiain
![Page 10: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Como ya hemos visto que el futuro se hace de forma especial en inglés, nos vamos a centrar en el presente y pasado.
Tanto el presente como el pasado pueden tener tres formas:
SIMPLE / CONTINUO / PERFECTO
PRESENT
SIMPLE
CONTINUOUS
PERFECT
PAST
SIMPLE
CONTINUOUS
PERFECT
UNIT 1
UNIT 2
UNIT 3
10Cristina Aranda Barandiain
![Page 11: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Para conjugar los verbos en inglés nos tenemos que fijar siempre en la forma positiva del verbo.
Vamos a coger un verbo de ejemplo: TO WORK. ¿Cómo serían las formas simples, continuas y perfectas del verbo TO WORK? Veamos.
11Cristina Aranda Barandiain
![Page 12: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
¿Por qué se le llama simple? Porque es tan simple que sólo
tiene 1 palabra:
Present simple: I/we/you/they WORK
he/she/it WORKS
Past simple: I/he/she/it/we/you/they WORKED
12Cristina Aranda Barandiain
![Page 13: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
¿Por qué se le llama continuous? Porque es una acción que continúa ocurriendo durante un tiempo.
Tiene 2 palabras: TO BE + ING
Present continuous: I AM WORKING
he/she/it IS WORKING
we/you/they ARE WORKING
Past continuous: I/he/she/it WAS WORKING
we/you/they WERE WORKING
13Cristina Aranda Barandiain
![Page 14: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
¿Por qué se le llama perfect? Porque se hace con el auxiliar TO HAVE, tener, y si tienes de todo, es perfecto.
Tiene 2 palabras:
TO HAVE + PARTICIPIO (-ED o 3rd column)
Presente perfect: I/we/you/they HAVE WORKED
he/she/it HAS WORKED
Past perfect: I/we/you/they HAD WORKED
he/she/it
14Cristina Aranda Barandiain
![Page 15: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Entonces, hemos dicho que…
SIMPLE CONTINUOUS PERFECT
1 palabra(I work)
2 palabras(I am working)
2 palabras(I have worked)
Entonces, antes hemos dicho que en inglés para hacer negativas y preguntas necesitamos un auxiliar, no podemos poner sólo un NO como en castellano. ¿Qué auxiliar necesita cada uno?
Si tenemos 1 palabra, el auxiliar es DO/DOES/DID.
Si tenemos 2 palabras y una es el verbo to be, pues ése es el auxiliar, AM/IS/ARE/WAS/WERE
Si tenemos 2 palabras y una es el verbo to have, pues ése es el auxiliar, HAVE/HAS/HAD.
15Cristina Aranda Barandiain
![Page 16: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)

Claro, porque os recuerdo que tanto el TO DO, como el TO BE como el TO HAVE significan HACER, SER O ESTAR y TENER además de ser auxiliares.
I don’t do (presente simple negativo: yo no hago) I am being (presente continuo del to be: estoy siendo)I have had (presente perfecto del have: he tenido)

¿Cómo se hace?
Como es un tiempo simple, ¿cuántas palabras tendrá? 1
Esa palabra tendrá o no una –S. ¿Quién lleva la –S? HE, SHE, IT
¿Por qué? Míralos, qué solitos se encuentran…
Pero si les ponemos una –S…
…ya no están solos y mira qué contentos se ponen…

OR
Normalmente se añade –S a los verbos con HE, SHE, IT.I cook / he cooksI love / he loves
Pero cuando los verbos tienen una terminación de éstas:
-s, -ss, -z, -sh, -ch, -x
hay que ponerles –es, porque si no, solo con –s no se pueden pronunciar.
Intentad pronunciar washs… IMPOSSIBLE!Pero si le ponemos –es, washes, sí se puede pronunciar.
![Page 31: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Cristina Aranda Barandiain 31
¿Y si acaba en… ?
Depende de la letra que vaya antes de la –Y…
Si antes de la –Y va una vocal, como en el verbo PLAY, se añade –S y ya está.I play / he plays
Si antes de la –Y va una consonante, como en el verbo CRY, se quita la –Y y se añade –IES.I cry / he cries
![Page 32: English verbal tenses](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022102513/555d361cd8b42ad8698b4c90/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Bueno, ya sabemos cómo se hacen las afirmativas:
Verbo o verbo con -S
Y si es una palabra sola, ¿qué necesitamos para hacer preguntas y negativas?
¡UN AUXILIAR!
OK! pero ¿cual? Si es una palabra sola y no hay ni TO
BE ni TO HAVE…
¡TO DO!
Don’t / Doesn’t para negativas
Do / Does para preguntas

La mayoría de las veces encontramos un past continuous combinado con un past simple, como poníamos en el ejemplo del principio:
“Yo estaba leyendo en el jardín cuando empezó a llover”
(descripción con past continuous: yo estaba leyendo en el jardín ; interrupción con past simple : cuando empezó a llover)
En esta combinación de tiempos (past simple y past continuous) son típicas dos palabras clave:
