AbstractThe purpose of this research is to prove that Eco-friendly Technology is one of the many steps to a better future and cleaner environment of Philippine. Eco-friendly Technology is commonly applied in transportation and these transportation with Eco-friendly Technology applied on them can help lessen the air pollution here in Philippines. Our research topic is Eco-friendly Technology in Transportation: An Analysis that aims to know how can eco-friendly technology help us, why do we need to use it, what are the eco-friendly transportation available at the present time, what are the disadvantages of eco-friendly technology, and what are the other potential eco-friendly technology that we will used here in the Philippines. In this research, we interviewed GET Ltd. Director Mr. Frankie Endriga about their product and to what kind of system they use in using this eco-friendly technology. During our endeavor to prove that Eco-friendly Technology is one of the many steps towards a better future and cleaner environment of Philippines, we were able to know the different pros and cons of using these vehicles. We also found out the different efforts of non - government organizations and sectors to introduce Electric Vehicles here in Philippines and that government support and cooperation is still needed to fully implement these nationwide

Introduction

As we all know, pollution in the world is very common and widespread. We are in danger of sickness and hazard from this pollution. Sicknesses are getting much harder to cure. Our physical and mental health is being affected from all these pollution around us. Not only us in the present are gravely affected but also mother earth is at risk. Natural disasters are getting deadlier these times because of the current condition of the earth. If this trend continues, the future generation wont have a world to enjoy, all because we are careless and ignorant to what we are doing right now. One step towards the restoration of our earth is with the use of e-tech. E-tech or Eco-Friendly Technology also known as Eco-Technology is the use of science and applying it that aims to fulfil human needs but with cost of lesser ecological destruction. With e-tech, there would be lesser damage to our environment while still being functional and productive. We can do something about these problems in our environment and its up to us to take action or not.The Philippines, although a little bit behind in terms of technology with comparison to other countries, have managed to get its hands on some precious Eco-friendly Technology with the help of some non - government organizations and sectors. Some examples of Eco- friendly Technology are the Electric Jeepneys, and the newly developed City Optimized Managed Electric Transport also known as COMET. These vehicles uses electricity rather than fuel that contributes into the emission of carbon dioxide which is the reason of our unclean air here in Metro Manila. These Eco-friendly Technology are said to be one of the steps towards a better future and a cleaner environment, and we have been gathering information to prove this. The goal of this research is to analyze and examine these Eco-friendly Technology which are said to be environment friendly and prove that these kind of newly developed type of transportation is a step towards the lessening of air pollution here in Philippines and that these vehicles can help us have a better environment.

Thesis Statement:Eco-friendly Technology Transportation, a step towards a better and cleaner environment in Philippines.

I. Why is there a need to use E-tech?Pollution is the presence of contaminants in the natural environment that causes adverse change. According to William R. Black (Black, 2010), the impact of pollution is already felt throughout the world. He said that a huge percentage of contributors to air pollution are smoke that comes from factories, cars, and others. There are more than one billion cars currently in the world today and the smoke from that huge numbers of cars is a very huge factor. According to B.P. Pundir (Pundir, 2007), these cars release tremendous amounts of pollutants in the air. The pollutants that come from cars are; particulate matters, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide. Particulate matters are particles of soot and metals give smog its color as they pose the most serious threat to human health, as they can penetrate deep into lungs. Diesel exhaust is a major contributor to PM pollution. Hydrocarbons are pollutants that react with nitrogen oxides in the presence of sunlight to form ozone which is present at ground level which is makes smog. Even though beneficial in the upper atmosphere, these gases are very dangerous at the ground level. Nitrogen oxides are pollutants that cause lung irritation and can weaken the body's defences against respiratory diseases. They also create ozone at the ground level. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, and poisonous gas formed by the combustion of fossil fuels such as gasoline and is emitted mostly from cars and trucks. When someone inhales it, it blocks oxygen from the brain, heart, and other vital organs. Fetuses, newborn children, and people with chronic illnesses are the most affected by this gas. Sulfur dioxide, power plants and motor vehicles create this pollutant by burning diesel. Sulfur dioxide can react in the atmosphere to form fine particles and greatly affects kids and old people. Greenhouse gases, motor vehicles also emit pollutants, such as carbon dioxide, that contribute to global climate change. William R. Black said, another effect of air pollution is the depletion of our ozone layer and one common implication of this is the greenhouses gases that heat up the world. These gases stay in the atmosphere for about 10 100 years and that is very long. It could greatly affect the present and the future generation (Black, 2010). According to British Geological, the consequences of these greenhouses gases are more droughts, more flooding, less ice and snow, more extreme weather incidents and rising of sea level. When the world temperature raises up, the ice and glaziers melts down very quickly. As a result of this, the sea level rises. When the sea level rises, low lying areas will be submerged in water. For example, some Pacific Island nations are expected to be partially or completely submerged by the end of the century. Coastal and shallow marine plants and animals will also be affected. The increase in standing water may allow more insects like mosquitoes and diseases spread by insects (British Geological Survey, 2014). William R. Black added that noise pollution is also a pollutant coming from the transportation sector (Black, 2010). According to Digital Records, the noise level in cities is rapidly increasing. This is due to heavier traffic and more powerful engines. On top of that there is a growing number of vehicles which are much louder and destructive to the ear. This is due to the fact that their owners install or modify mufflers and install large sound systems creating so-called "boom cars which can be heard from a kilometre away. With a little bit of science, the author described how these boom cars contribute to noise pollution. Standard car stereo systems have amplifiers capable of 5 W -> 50 W/channel. This is sufficient power, since most car speakers can produce 80 dB -> 100 dB sound with just 0.1 W of input power. Boom cars can have sound systems which have amplifiers with 700 W -> 2000 W/channel. With the same efficiency speakers they can produce about 143 dB sound, which is 10,000 times more powerful. This is also applicable to wang-wang which creates so much noise and just really gets on the nerves of people. Not only they are very irritating, they also have some bad psychological effects on us. The noise produced by these vehicles not only lowers the quality of life and work of the majority of people but also can result in permanent hearing loss for vehicle operators and people nearby. At high levels this noise can result even in tissue damage leading to serious health problems. The author stated, Walking on the street is a hazzard these days and is not at all enjoyable (Roland-Mieszkowski, 2014).According to GET Ltd., there are more than 5000 premature deaths in Metro Manila per year because of air pollution. The government spend almost P14 billion in treating diseases caused by air pollution. There 22,000 metric tons of soot emitted each year. 85% of air pollution comes from vehicular sources. 6,000 lbs. of a standard jeepney weight has great impact on city roads. 85,820 road accidents this past year. There is a 14% increase in road accidents from this past year. Also, over P2.4 billion lost income per day due to traffic. These numbers are indeed very scary to look at (Global Electric Transportation Ltd. Interview, 2014). These pollutions no doubt have bad effects on us, bad effects that can greatly affect our daily lives. Our health is at risk every day because of these pollutants that comes from cars and it is very wise to think of some alternatives for a better environment.II. How can E-tech help have a greener Philippines?First of all E-tech transportation is made to help reduce the emissions of greenhouse gas into our atmosphere. Which will help to prevent Global Warming. Having a greener Philippines means having less pollution, having more trees, more ecofriendly cars and cleaner bodies of water. E-tech transportation help in a way that replacing the high carbon emitting vehicles with Electric Vehicles or more advance e-tech transportation which emits less carbon or no carbon. E-tech also help have less traffic in Manila the COMET E-jeep has specific terminal which is where it charges and take passengers. One of the way E-tech help to have greener Philippines is the $300 Million dollar for green transportation revolution in the Philippines. Did you know that there are 3.5 million gas burning motorcycles and tricycles being used in the Philippines? The $300 Million Dollar will be used to replace a 100,000 gasoline burning tricycles in the Philippines with more eco-friendly electric tricycles. Tricycles cause a lot of pollution in Philippines. Replacing them with more energy efficient and cleaner electric tricycles is the agenda of this project. This project will also lessen the import of oil of the Philippines because many Public transportation will be change to electric vehicles, having less use of oil is having a greener Philippines. Another way of E-tech for a greener Philippines is the E-jeepney, I have once rode an electric jeep in my hometown which is very refreshing to ride. E-jeep doesnt create that much noise and is not very rough like the regular jeep, the ride is very smooth and not hot even in the middle of the day. There was a new kind of electric jeep which is called COMET although it was American designed, it was really designed for the roads of Manila. It was also primarily built to replace the original jeepneys which are a great contributor in noise and air pollution and also traffic. COMET has a very unique path like bus it has stops which will reduce the traffic, traffic is another contributor in Global warming. Having a greener Philippines means having a reliable transportation. COMET has very small amount of carbon emission which is the opposite of the regular jeepney. E-tech transportation has many ways including the solar powered jeepneys, and it will be discovered in some time according to the source in COMET.The Philippines is setting the trend for electric vehicles, having many types of vehicles in electric form is a success for E-tech. E-Tech transportation will be the main transportation reducing the CO2 emissions. But replacing the old types is not that easy but worth an effort for the sake of the country.United Kingdom pushes for green transport in the Philippines by using Electric vehicles. Transport Chief Operating Officer Garret Emerson says In terms of air quality, there are a number of ways of reducing the emissions that come from vehicles. They reduce the emissions while maintaining the quality of transportation. Hybrid Bus Development, it combines diesel engine and electric motor reduce the emission. Another type of Bus development which produces 0 emission is the Hydrogen bus project. These buses is another way of E-tech to help have a greener Philippines. III. What are the different E-tech transportation being used today in Philippines?Although the Philippines doesn't have the latest nor the most high - tech equipments, different non-government organizations and sectors made a move to cope with the pollution that our country is suffering from (Gonzales, 2014). Electric Vehicles, the solution that gave way for Metro Manila's air to be clean again (Gonzales, 2014). These Electric Vehicles are environment - friendly and at the same time helps our beloved drivers to save more money compare to when they are using the fueled vehicles wherein 80% of their profit is spent for fuel ('One million electric vehicles in PH by 2020', 2014). With Electric Vehicles there is no more need to spend so much money for fuel because Electric Vehicles are chargeable by electric and charging stations were made available through the help of other companies (Rivero, 2013). The different eVehicles that are being used today in Philippines are known as, Electric Jeepney (eJeepney), Electric Tricycle (eTrike), Electric Shuttle (eShuttle), and Electric Quadtricycles (eQuad) ('One million electric vehicles in PH by 2020', 2014). The first charging station for Electric Vehicles was first unveiled by MERALCO last August 21 2013 (Rivero, 2013).

The use of eVehicles to help preserve our environment was being pushed by different associations and organizations for a long time. The Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (eVAP) have been promoting the use of these eVehicles, they have been conducting summits and introducing different kinds of eVehicles to other people to let them know that using eVehicles is a step to preserve our environment (Electric vehicle makers, eco groups from PH, Asia plug in for annual meeting, 2014). Through hard work and determination Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (eVAP) had achieved their goal and LTFRB issued the country's first commercial electric jeepney franchise last February 27, 2012 (First commercial eJeepney franchise to be launched in Makati, 2012). As of today, Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (eVAP) still continue on conducting summits and involving eVehicles into many activities and competition to prove their worth in the industry (Electric vehicle makers, eco groups from PH, Asia plug in for annual meeting, 2014).Electric Jeepney is a variation of our regular jeepney but it is environment friendly and uses electricity rather than fuel (Roque, 2012). The revolution of Electric Jeepneys and the move to integrate sustainable transport with clean energy generation was pioneered by the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (iCSC). The Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities is a non-profit group working on sustainable energy solutions and fair climate policy (iCSC: Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities, 2014). The first fleet of Electric Jeepneys were launched in Makati last February 27, 2012 (First commercial eJeepney franchise to be launched in Makati, 2012).Like the regular jeepney, Electric Jeepney passenger will also pay the same amount as they would on a regular jeepney, but the difference to that of regular jeepney is that Electric Jeepney drivers doesn't have to follow the boundary system applied on regular jeepney (Roque, 2012). Because of not following a boundary sytem, it is expected that traffic congestion will be avoided. Also Electric Jeepney Drivers will have a fixed monthly salary, full benefits, and 13th month pay, compare to regular jeepney drivers that follows a boundary system wherein the driver has a quota to meet and that quota will be for the owner and the rest of the profit will be for the driver himself (First commercial eJeepney franchise to be launched in Makati, 2012).Furthermore, the Electric Jeepney provides convenience not only to the driver and passenger but also to the environment because it uses electricity rather than fuel that generates smoke that causes the worsening of our environment. Compare to the regular jeepney, a full charge of Electric Jeepney only costs 250 pesos while a whole day of labor using a regular jeep spend almost 80% of the driver's profit. To say it short, regular jeepney drivers would spend more money for their vehicle's gas that depend on the changing oil prices, while Electric Jeepney drivers have more opportunity to earn more money (First commercial eJeepney franchise to be launched in Makati, 2012).Up to today different organizations are still coming together to further promote the use of Electric Jeepneys. The cost of Electric Jeepney is quite expensive compare to that of a regular jeepney which costs 350,000 pesos to 400,000 pesos, but an Electric Jeepney provides convenience that a regular jeepney cant offer (Roque, 2012). A brand new unit of Electric Jeepney costs 600,000 php to 700,000 php, and a single unit can accomodate up to 24 passengers and can run up to 40 - 50 kph, its charging time is 6 - 8 hours and can go up to 115 km, with the help of the Battery Swap Program, replacing a depleted battery to a newly charged one can take only ten minutes (First commercial eJeepney franchise to be launched in Makati, 2012).

As soon as 2014 enters, the government has introduced a new vehicle that will help lessen the pollution here in Philippines, Metro Manila in particular. It is a more advanced version of Electric Jeepney, it uses advance technology that was developed with the help of American analyst and was designed for the Philippines, it is based from our traditional Jeepney and it is build to provide the needs of people, in terms transportation, especially here in Metro Manila. This newly introduced vehicle is known as "City Optimized Managed Electric Transport" or "COMET" for short (Ranada, 2013).The City Optimized Managed Electric Transport (COMET) was introduced to us by Americans, US-based Pangea Motors, LLC, which is responsible for its design and technology. Its exclusive distributor is Global Electric Transportation (GET) which is a partnership of both American and Filipino private investors (Luces, 2014). Its battery is made up of Lithium Cobalt that helps in producing maximum performance and efficiency. It only weighs 3520 lbs. compared to a regular jeepney that weighs over 6000 lbs. This 6000 lbs. can damage city roads that leads to early destruction of roads. But with COMET, it doesnt weigh heavy enough that can damage the road (Global Electric Transportation Ltd. Interview, 2014).IV What are the potential E-Tech Transportations to be used in the Philippines?Studies have shown that the environment has been slowly deteriorating during the start of the 21st century. Since then, scientists have been inventing and improving certain transportations that can be quite useful in preserving the environment. Today, many innovations strive to develop E-tech research that applies to everyday transportations , many are which cars, trains, motorcycle bikes, scooters, etc. In the Philippines, heat is a major disadvantage because E-tech engines produce heat substantially as diesel engines, so, a reliable cooling system is needed. Many factors depict what kind of vehicles are needed and are complimentary through Filipino lifestyle. We need to consider that these transportations need to be cheap, efficient, and recommendable. Like e-tech motorbikes, jeeps, and compact cars, these meet the standards of our need to change our land transportations, need not to mention the LRT's and MRT's, of course. Also, a new breed of race cars are suited to E-technology which is the F-E or Formula-E race car; although it can replace F-1 racing, the F-E takes a whole lot of electricity and can affect the supply and demand for electrical power. Also, we need to list the pros and cons for using these kind of transportations. The advantages include: using electricity instead of gasoline reduces the chance of fires throughout the country, it also lessens city smogs that cloud the horizon which usually occurs in the morning, it makes vehicles easy to start due to 1-battery dependence E-tech vehicles also have disadvantages that include: using E-tech transportations takes up electricity instead of fossil fuels, so our demand for electricity heightens, it also needs time to charge instead of the "1-2-3-go!" fueling of diesel engines, and, the more people switching to E-tech vehicles, the more power stations, dams, and even nuclear power plants we have to build to cope up with the supply of electricity. The Philippines need to be a lot less independent from diesel and gasoline, stated in the previous paragraph, because our vehicles emit smoke which not only is bad on the environment but also belches dirt and unburned carbon that blackens are streets and makes us prone to sickness and disease. According to ddiele (ddietle, 2009) Many potential E-technological transportations await to be on our disposal, maybe we really need it because of the rising prices of gasoline today. Some inventions have been proven to be quite useful. Examples of these are Vactrains, NOAH,Segways, A2s and electric vehicles. The Vactrain is a train placed in a subway which has less air resistance thus allowing the train to move at higher speeds and also lessens its energy consumption needed to be mobile. A NOAH is just a type of segway, it helps in minimizing air pollution, it helps lessen the space needed for automobiles to pass and is most certainly eco and user friendly. An A2 is a type of aircraft that is less energy consuming. It also lasts longer in flight because it uses liquid hydrogen for its fuel and has a coolant for its engines making it more energy saving. Electric vehicles are the most popular kind of E-Transportations because they are one of the most commonly used types of technology in the world. Electrical vehicles can save a lot of energy because it doesnt use any petroleum elements which can be quite harmful for the environment. It also saves on money because it is battery/ electricity operated. These newly invented technologies are available in most of the countries in the world. These types of E-Transportations can provide fast and convenient travels for the daily commuters and it can help in improving our environment as well. These types of advanced technology can be quite useful for the progress of the country. With these types of E- Transportations here in the Philippines, we are sure to prosper, not only our economy but our environment as well. This can also teach the future generations to save the environment and at the same time, be conservative and creative. These types of inventions may only help quite a few right now but after time passes by, not only will they prove to be quite the powerful type of weapon that we need in order to fight pollution and poverty but they have also done a lot in preserving the environment during the previous years.V What are the disadvantages of Eco-friendly Technology?Even if E-Tech transportation is being improved to help reduce air pollution. There are still disadvantages in using it. Maybe the ratio of the advantages against disadvantages is higher, there are still disadvantages that are in need of help to remove . Even if we try to remove this disadvantages there will new disadvantages that will appear. But at least we can make the project near perfect. We all know that there is no such thing as perfectness like in machine efficiencies no one can obtain the 100% efficient machine. We can only make it better and better (10 Minute Charge for Student-Built Electric Car, 2009). E-Tech nowadays circulates in Electric Vehicles turning the gasoline burning vehicles into electric vehicles which is less polluting. One of the disadvantages of electric vehicles is its charging time (Advantages and Disadvantages of Electric Vehicles, 2011). Unlike the old type of vehicles which uses gasoline, when you need gasoline you can refill it in a minute but with electric vehicle you need to charge it for like 6-8 hours for it to be fully charge again. It is like your transportation is limited because the hours it take to charge is very long. So you are required to limit the use of your electric vehicle if you dont want to waste time waiting for it to be charged. And at the time being the charging stations for electric vehicles are limited, unlike the gasoline station they are everywhere when you turn in a street there is another gasoline station to serve you. But after sometime charging stations for electric vehicles may pop out everywhere for convenience (Cabalonga, 2013). There is an alternative Electric Vehicle which is hybrid, it uses electricity and gasoline, if you ran out of charge you may use gasoline for convenience. But still you use gasoline so large amount of pollution is again being produced (Advantages and Disadvantages of Electric Vehicles, 2011).Electric vehicles' disadvantage is it still produce pollution in another way when it use electricity that came from Electricity plants which is thermal and produce air pollution. There are electric plants which dont produce pollution which is the one we need to use. But still it is limited in some places. Some developments are being made like the electric vehicles that can be charge using solar power, which is 100% ecofriendly and dont produce greenhouse gases (Advantages and Disadvantages of Electric Vehicles, 2011).

E-Jeepney an example of electric vehicle has disadvantages too. Which is it cost a lot more than the regular jeepney, around 800,00 pesos according to my source paper. Which is really expensive for a regular Filipino who wants to drive an e-jeepney. But this disadvantage may disappear as time pass by. Because many researchers and inventors are finding a way to create more advance and cheaper electric vehicles. And the E-jeepney will be mainstream at some time so its price statistically will also decrease. Another disadvantage is they are slower than the regular vehicle which uses gasoline, their average speed is around 40km/h-80km/h (Cabalonga, 2013).

ConclusionFrom the research, we are indeed at a great risk with the current state of the world. Pollution levels are very high and its wide spread throughout the whole world. Our world is poisoned with all the pollution and dirt. These poisons came from us. These poisons came from all of our activity here on earth. As we progress towards enhancing our lives, we are starting to forgot about Mother Earth. We are starting to kill her will all of our waste and at this current rate, the future ahead of us is not so bright. We must start doing things now, or else, the future wouldnt get any brighter.Since the world, as we all know, is polluted and mainly because of air pollution. The air we breathe right now is actually much polluted and this is dangerous to everyone. Cars in the world are the main contributor of this air pollution. One billion cars is so many and it is a very huge factor on why we have high level of pollution nowadays. These cars produce harmful pollutants that are endangering our lives. Noise pollution too greatly affects us and harms us. It is a must that we must take action now. E-tech can help have a greener Philippines many ways. One of it is E-tech transportation will decrease the CO2 emissions. One article I read is removing the old gasoline burning tricycles and replacing them with E-Trike which uses electricity as main source for power. According to Neeraj Jain of ADB E-Trikes are a cleaner, greener transport solution for the Philippines, and provide a better quality of life for trike drivers, The E-Trikes help have a greener Philippines according to the article when 100,000 gasoline powered vehicles were replaced the Philippine government or the country will save more than $100 million a year by saving imports of fuels. While doing so $100 million worth of fuels will be save having less consumption means less CO2 emission. Another E-tech transportation that contributes is the E-Jeep or more specifically the COMET. This E-Jeep also uses electricity as main power source making it another ecofriendly vehicle. The old class of Jeep produces noise pollution and air pollution. The COMET E-Jeep doesnt produce air pollution and noise pollution making it a contributor in making a greener Philippines. E-Techs main purpose is to reduce the Air pollution and noise pollution.During the research we have found and introduce the different eco-friendly technology in transportation that are being used in PH. We have found the Electric Vehicles, which are being used in PH for about 2 years now. We have also introduced the modified Electric Jeepney which is known as City Optimized Managed Electric Transport. We have found solid information that proves the great improvement that these technology can do in our environment here in Philippines. As a conclusion, we were able to know the different technologies that the Philippines can afford. We were also able to know what more we can do in order to help our innovators in thinking of new technologies that can both help us humans and the earth. We also knew the different people that we should really give credits to because of their unwavering perseverance on developing new ways to help improve our life and at the same time preserve our environment. Those newly invented technologies that were stated are available in most of the countries in the world. These types of inventions may only help quite a few right now but after time passes by, not only will they prove to be quite the powerful type of weapon that we need in order to fight pollution and poverty but they have also done a lot in preserving the environment during the previous years.Indeed that there are some still some disadvantages of using eco-friendly technology transportations. It is very expensive to be mass-produced so local drivers are able to use it. Not all drivers out there are gonne be able to afford that expensive thing. Also, its charging time is slow that it can affect its efficiency on the road. Instead of going on the road, sometimes you wait doing nothing just getting the battery to charge up again. Although it is eco-friendly, it also has its downfall in some aspects. The Philippines had already made deals with private agencies to finally integrate e-tech with the transportation sector here. GETs GETMO is one of the important thing that may happen here in the Philippines. This wise and strategic plan is well researched and ready to go here in the Philippines. The use of COMET and cashless transaction is one huge step in the transportation sector using technology. Along with the GETMO is its features of stops and hot line services that will greatly serve the Filipinos. After that, there are also news of other kinds of electric vehicles to be used here in the Philippines. This information is great news to us, that with all these pollution here in the world right now, there are actually some answers on how to treat them. Truly, it is indeed that the use of e-tech is a solution on how to control pollution in the world right. But how can we truly stop the pollution and make it go away?
