REPORT OF ENGLISH ON FRIDAY PROGRAMME

English On Friday Programme is one of a pioneer programme by English Panel of

Sekolah Kebangsaan Jelawat since 2008. The idea of running this programme was suggested

by our highly motivated headmaster, Tuan Haji Mat Ludin Bin Hasan who is very committed

and serious in reaching the target of achievement of English Language by the students of

Sekolah Kebangsaan Jelawat especially for UPSR 2009. Hence, all English language teachers

are responsibled to 5 classes formed and believe that when there is a will, there must be a

way. They are to help the pupils by giving extra information and knowledge in order to make

the childrens dream come true and not just building a castle in the air. Hopefully, everyone

involves in this programme would get their satisfaction in teaching and learning process,

    InsyaAllah.

The aims and main objectives of English On Friday Programme is to guide the

students in the use of vocabulary and the correct grammar in communication, writing essays

and aswering questions. Besides that, the other aims of this programme is to build their

confident in using English Language in their daily life and to make teaching and learning

    English language fun and enjoyable.

This programme is organized for seven months, starting from February until August.

The programme will take place from the early year until standard six pupils sitting for the

UPSR. This programme is conducted once a week, which is on every Friday. It started at

8.15 am and ended at 11.30 am.

The target group of this programme is the level two pupils which are standard four,

five and six. The main focus of the programme is given to the level two pupils in order to help

them increase their perfomance in mid-term examination, final examination and in UPSR.

Through this programme, English language teacher will be able to identify their weaknesses

and remedial actions can be performed immediately. Therefore, these students will not be left

out in the lessons taught by the English language teacher.

A Launching Ceremony for the English On Friday Programme was held at the hall of

Sekolah Kebangsaan Jelawat on 4 February 2010. All the students and teachers were asked to

gather in the hall at 8.00 in the morning.

proficiency among the students. All the teachers in this school is trying their best to increase

the achievement in UPSR through this programme. He also hopes that the programme is

After the opening speeches, guests were entertained with several perfomances from

the pupils such as storytelling, poem and Coral Speaking. Spontaneous quiz was also held by

the English language teachers to test the students understanding. Before the ceremony ended,

Mr. Saupi Bin Majid was given some souvenirs by the headmaster of the school as a sign of

appreciation and gratitude for being the special guest for the opening ceremony of the English

Before being accepted to join this programme, students must get the permission from

the parents first. This is because each student is charged RM 10.00 per month. Therefore,

students must complete an application form to avoid any problem arises later on. The fee of

the programme is charged to the students to cover the cost of buying the paper and printing

    worksheets.

Every teacher who teaches has a strong commitment to launch the program.

Distribution tables were fairly distributed by Madam Rodziah Binti Mohd Noor, head of the

English Language Committee. Each teacher will teach two classes containing a total of 15

students. Due to the lack of English language teachers, head of the English Language

Committee have to take some teachers from the level one pupils if the teachers from level two

pupils encounter with a problem that cannot be avoided on Friday.

Classes for this programme begin at 8.30 am until 11.30 am. Therefore, students are

required to arrive early and wear a school uniform. Attendance is compulsory and will be

taken by the teacher on duty. Appropriate action will be taken to the students who cannot

obey the rules of the programme.

The response and participation of students was very encouraging. In addition, school

administrators and parents also given their support for this programme. Therefore, this

program has been successfully implemented throughout 2010. Before standard 6 students sit

for the UPSR, a closing ceremony has been held for this program. In this ceremony, Student

Presentation Awards was given to the students who have the excellent results in test and mid-

term examination for English language subject.

A total of 9 students were selected to be given awards. A representative for each class

in this programme will be chosen to take the awards. The award was presented by the

headmaster of Sekolah Kebangsaan Jelawat. Each student would receive a set of reference

books in English and a bilingual dictionary.

However, there are some benefits and weaknesses identified in this programme. All

the weaknesses will be used to improve the program later on. The benefit of the

implementation of this program is that students are able to improve their skills and able to use

correct grammar when answering questions, writing essays and the use of this language in

communication also improved. A lot of new vocabulary was used by them when

communicating in the classroom. They also have more confident to speak in English. Thus,

there was an increasing passing percentage in UPSR 2010. The passing percentage for the

English language rose by 91.0 percent over 2009, which is 74.3 percent. From that, we can

see clearly the effectiveness of this programme, English On Friday Programme.

There are also several weaknesses and should be acted upon by English Language

Committee. One of the weaknesses is the time spent by the level two pupils in this

programme. They had to sacrifice their time with family on weekends. This put them in

pressure as they have to attend school even on Fridays. Although this programme was

conducted in school, students unable to obey the school rules because they were assuming the

program does not involve the time of their schooling. Some of them tend to come late to the

class and also absent without giving the rational reasons. Since each student was charged with

the fee, so they tend to act freely and do whatever they want. The program also did not

include all the level two pupils. It was not compulsory to all student and only opened to those

who were interested. Besides that, students who were from the poor family tend to think that

the payment for the programme, which is RM10 was a budern to them. Thus, the teaching and

learning was only given to those who were able to pay the fee of the programme.

Some positive steps have to be carried out by the English Language Committee to

address these problems. The teaching process should not only be exam-oriented. Teachers can

organize some activities such as quizzes, find the hidden words, and crossword puzzles during

the teaching and learning process so that the students will feel more relaxed and not stressed.

Too much exercise books and sets of questions in the classroom will only give stress to the

students and thus affect their perfomance during tests and exam. Teachers can also use

various methods so that teaching and learning will not be bored. For example, organize

activities for communication using acting techniques.

Strict action should be imposed on students who cannot abey the rules of the

programme such as not allowed them to participate in the program. The PIBG also should

play their role by providing financial support to students who can be categorized as

poor. They also can be given opportunity to attend this programme but no payment will be

charged to them. PIBG can help these students by paying the fee of the programme for them.

In conclusion, although this programme, English On Friday Programme is just

introduced in 2010, it has shown a big changes to the achievement of this school by increasing

the passing percentage during UPSR 2010. Therefore, it is recommended that this programwill still continue in 2011 to help the students who are weak in English language subject. The

    8

efforts shown by the English Language Committee should be appreciated as it is actually help

in realizing governments aspiration to strenghthen the use of English language among

    students in schools.

    REPORT OF STORYTELLING COMPETITION

Strorytelling Competition is the activity in which an individual compete with each

other by showing their skills and talents to deliver a story that was read from the reading

materials whether books, magazines or non-print materials. All the participants will be

evaluated by a panel of judges based on several criteria. The candidate with the highest

score will be declared as the winner. Typically, each participant is given 15 - 20 minutes

to deliver the story of his choice.

Storytelling competition was held in Sekolah Kebangsaan Jelawat during English

Language Month. The purpose of this competition is to find the talented students in thisfield and to train students to be more confident when speaking in public. In

addition, it can also train students to use English language as a medium of communication

when communicating with friends, teachers, parents and community. They will know the

correct grammar and learn new vocabulary while reading the story during competition.

The time taken for this competition is a month. It was held in August. The target group

for this competition was the level one pupils. It involved pupils in standard one, two and

three. Each class was required to provide three participants. This competition would be

judged by the level two teachers. English language teachers for the level one pupils were

given 4 weeks to train the participants. Stories were selected based on the theme which is

moral stories. Stories selected by the participants should contained good values that can be

    emulated by the audience.

Before the selection of participants, a launching ceremony was held for Language

Month. It was held during the weekly assembly on the morning of Sunday, 1 August 2010.

The ceremony involves all the school community. In the event, the head of the

English Language Committee, which is Madam Rodziah Binti Mohd Noor has given her

speech. She hopes that this competition, Storytelling Competition will get good responses

from the level one pupils. Besides that, there were also some acting performances in English

language. After that, the headmaster of the school gave his speech, and launched the

    ceremony of Language Month.

At first, participants were trained to talk in their respective classes. After two weeks,

they were given the opportunity to convey and present the story at the weekly assembly. This

kind of training was conducted so that the participants would have more confident on the

    stage later on.

The most important event of the competition was held on 30 August 2010 at 8:00 in

the morning. It was held at the hall of Sekolah Kebangsaan Jelawat. Before the competition

took place, some of the teachers tried to make suitable masks and clothing for the students sothat they could act out their characters action perfectly. Parents of the participants were

  • 7/29/2019 English Report Fuziah

invited to see the talents showed by their children in this competition. Before the competition

took place, the headmaster of the school was invited to deliver his speech. He was very

impressed with the commitment shown by the participants and the cooperation of the English

language teachers. He also hopes that all these efforts showed by the teachers are able to help

them to find the talented students in this field and achieve the objectives of this competition.

After that, the competition took place. The first participant who deliver the story was

the standard one pupils, followed by the standard two and standard three. They could

convey a story with a variety of styles. There were also some participants unable to memorize

the story correctly. The creativity shown by the teachers in decorating the stage and creating

the costumes for the participants has made the competition became more interesting.

The competition ended at 1.00 pm. All the panel of judges took around 20 minutes to

calculate the scores and determine the winners of the competition. Only three winners will

selected for each year. The first winner will receive money which is RM50.00 and a set

of storybooks, runner-up will receive money which is RM25.00 and a set of storybooks, while

third place receives RM 15.00 and a set of storybooks. The other participant will receive a

certificate of participation. The competition results is shown as below:

During the Storytelling Competition, several benefits and weaknesses have been

identified. One of the benefit is students are able to memorize and remember the story very

well. Therefore, it can expose them with the use of vocabulary in English. Each participant

showed their confident when performing on the stage and this experience actually will help

them to become the successful speakers later on.

    12

Some weaknesses that can be seen during the competition are firstly, there were some

students who neglected their studies because too much focus was given to the training for the

competition. Secondly, there were also some students who were still unable to use the proper

pronunciation and vocabulary although they have received guidance by their respective

teacher. Thirdly, selection of participants was also for the talented student only. Thus, skills of

the storytelling unable to be mastered by all students in Sekolah Kebangsaan Jelawat. Only

two people were chosen as the representative of the class and did not involve all students in

    the class.

A few improvements should be make by the English Language Committee if

the competition want to be held once again later on. One of the suggestions is teachers should

be given more time to train the students for the competition so that they can deliver the story

smoothly and can avoid making the vocabulary errors.Teachers are also suggested to do the

training in the evening so that it will not affect the teaching and learning of the students in the

classroom. Thus, students can give more attention during the training. Teachers can also use

the acting techniques while teaching in the classroom to replace the skills of storytelling as it

can involves all students in that class. Therefore, all the students can master the skills even he

or she is just played a small character.

    CONCLUSION

Allparties must play their role in realizing the governments aspiration to uphold the

use of Malay language and strengthen the use of English language. The success achieved by

the school indicates the efficiency of the school administrators, teachers and students.

A creative teacher will try his best so that each student can master all the skills taught during

teaching and learning process. A creative teacher also should be able to use various methods

to attract students attention to the teaching and learning process. Learning not only occurs in

the classroom, but also outside the classroom and school session. Therefore, each programme

planned should be appropriate so that the objective of the programme can be achieved.

Programmes organized and conducted by the English Language Committee is suitable to be

practised in the school as it helps to improve the use of the English language among students.

This program should be continued in 2011 as it gives a lot of advantages to the

students. Besides that, some of the weaknesses that have been identified during the

programme need to be improved so that the achievement of pupils can be improved further.
