TITLE : REPORT ON THE GROUP DISCUSSION (TASK 1)
Task 1 is an assessment of the Listening and Speaking Skills component of
the course, and my friends and I are assessed individually. This task consists of two
parts. Task 1a is individual presentation of views while task 1b is a group discussion.
We are divided into five groups and each group consists of four members.
Kanagadewi d/o Achiah, Venisha d/o Jayaraman, Muhammad Ilham Bin Amri, and I
are in a same group.
As we planned, our task 1a and 1b held on 14th August 2014. Before the day,
my group were given a title that is ‘You are a group of environmentalists discussing
the solutions to global warming.’ We were given four points on the ways to overcome
global warming such as ban open burning, introduce more affordable environment-
friendly vehicles, carry out tree-planting projects and curb deforestation. For your
information, I’m candidate B. My task is to talk about one of the solutions to global
warming is to introduce more affordable environment-friendly vehicles. Our lectures
Mr.Retnakumar, Mdm.Pushparani and Mdm.Patricia explained us clearly about the
assessment. Besides, our lectures also guided us while preparing for task 1a and 1b.
Before the assessment day, I prepared my text for task 1a which is known as
individual presentation. At the same time, my group members and I had a group
meeting for three times to discuss about the points and its arrangements. The group
meetings helped us to clarify our confusions on the topics and get a chance to share
our points among each other. We had practised on the ways of presenting points,
style and register and spoken discourse.
On the assessment day, around 4.00pm my group discussion were started.
We were the last group who presented infront of two lectures that is Mr.Retnakumar
and Mdm.Pushparani. Our task 1 was started with task 1a which is known as
individual presentation and followed by task 1b that is group discussion. For task 1a,
my group were given 12 minutes to present. Each member of us was given 3
minutes to present our views on the issue which we had prepared before the
discussion. While one of us presents views, others are required to listen selectively,
critically and take notes in order to participate in task 1b. Therefore, the task 1a was
started by Kanaga Achiah who known as candidate A. She talked about ban open
burning to overcome global warming.
Then the second point was about introduce more affordable environment
friendly vehicles. In my talk, I just introduced environment-friendly vehicles such as
hybrid cars, electric cars, solar cars and so on. In addition candidate C gave her
opinion that carry out tree-planting projects is the best way to reduce global warming.
This is because trees can absorb odours and pollutant gases (nitrogen oxides,
ammonia, sulphur dioxide and ozone) and filter particulates out of the air by trapping
them on their leaves and bark. Furthermore, candidate D gave his opinion about
curbing deforestation. Everyone gave their elaboration about the issue.
In the second round candidate A agreed with my point that is introduce more
affordable environment friendly vehicles is the best way to overcome global warming.
On the other hand, candidate D was agreed with candidate C’s point that is carry out
tree-planting projects. As a candidate B, I tried to pursue my group members. I
explained the advantages of using hybrid cars, electric cars and the importance of
fixing catalytic converter in the car. From my explaination, candidate D started to
agree with my point. But candidate C remained with her own point. After a few
arguments, candidate D also agreed with my point. As a conclusion, we all agreed
that introduce more affordable environment-friendly vehicles is the best way to
overcome global warming. Our group discussion ended around 4.30pm.
