Thanks for showing an interest in this role. We are a big, broad, national company that welcomes everyone with open arms. I hope the next few pages give you a sense of who we are and how we work.

We also work hard to ensure we remain open to everyone. That’s why we always sing in English and why we always have accessibly-priced tickets - free on Fridays, Saturdays and Opening nights if you are under 18, and lots of tickets at £10 for the rest of us.

But if we are to genuinely change lives through opera, as is our ultimate aim, we have to take our work to people who might not think going to the theatre is for them. So we perform in and with schools and communities through our extensive learning and participation programme, called ENO Baylis, reaching over 8,000 children a year.

As the national opera house specifically focussed on developing new talent, we offer training,coaching and professional development not only to ourperformers and the next generation of operatic professionals, but all staff across the wide range of roles in ENO.

Encouraging diversity is one of ENO’s strengths and it is our eclecticism that makes us a great place to work.

While our home is the incredible London Coliseum – the largest theatre in London’s West End - we are increasingly staging work outside the theatre walls and outside London. It’s a key part of the remit of being the national opera house for everyone.

We believe a national opera company has a duty to stage work that people outside the capital can enjoy. We partly do this by producing a range of digital content from our productions that can be accessed from across the globe; and we are now stepping up our ambition to perform work outside Central London.

Staging Distinctive world class work

ENO has always staged opera that is different. We are known as a place that embraces and encourages artistic daring and creative risk. We do this in tandem with employing British-based, British-trained talent (80% of performers last season). We develop British singers to learn opera in English, who work closely with our chorus and orchestra.

We work closely with other opera houses around the world, co-producing work. Our biggest Box Office success ever, last season’s Porgy and Bess, was co-produced with the New York Metropolitan Opera.

ENO’s Annual Revenue

We have a mixed business model with £12.3m a year invested by Arts Council England (we are an ‘NPO’ – a National Portfolio Organisation). Almost 60% of our revenue comes from fundraising, our endowment fund, ticket sales, merchandising and renting out the Coliseum to ballet and musicals.

The ACE investment goes to support a range of initiatives that we wouldn’t be able to support without government money such as:

• Reduced priced tickets for those with disabilities, for schools and other audience development schemes aimed at increasing and retaining the opera audience in the UK

• Annual upkeep and insurance of the London Coliseum

• Maintain a chorus of 44 singers for nine months a year and have an orchestra all year round

• Free tickets to under 18’s and community groups

• Stage opera that isn’t commercially viable but important for the industry and genre

• New talent development training and learning and participation programmes

• Employ full time in house craft departments such as sets, props, costume, wardrobe, hair and make up

We are looking for a Director of ENO Baylis to broaden out the reach of ENO to four audience groups:- Primary School Children, Secondary School children, OAPs and Disabled audiences.

This appointment will be made on merit, but we believe that diversity strengthens and enriches us, and that it is the responsibilityof everyone at ENO to make the arts and cultural sector a more diverse and equal place. Summary

The Director of ENO Baylis will report to the Artistic Director and work closely with the Music Director, Director of Communications, Director of Marketing and Audience Engagement, the Commercial Director and other senior colleagues. The role is a member of the Management Team.

The Director will line manage a team of around 5 people.

Key Responsibilities

The Director will need to devise and execute a national strategy in multiple areas

• Primary school kids – primarily through staging content targeted at younger audiences in the Coliseum and digitally

• Secondary school kids – via work in schools (such as Opera Squad) to work outside of schools (national singing competition, Baylis Youth Company) to audience attendance schemes in the Coliseum (Free tickets for Under 18’s, Baylis in the Balcony) to career development schemes on digital to a fully developed digital engagement strategy

• OAPs – via work in the Coliseum (ENO Sing-a-longs) to work outside the theatre (care home performances) to a digital strategy

• Disabled audiences – primarily via work in the Coliseum (such as “relaxed” performances)
