    2. Smokey's slogan oversimplifies the larger situation; most forest fires are actually caused by lightning orrailway trains. source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smokey_Bear

Show transcriptBobHi, it's the Bob and Rob Show. This is Bob.

    RobAnd this is Rob.

BobO.K. Just when you thought you could never study English again, you've got the Bob andRob Show.

RobThe Bob and Rob Show. That's right. How are you today, Bob?

BobI'm doing great. I'm feeling really good. Summer break is just around the corner1.

    RobYes, it is.

BobJust around the corner means soon.

RobSoon. Yes, that's right. That's an idiom, really.

BobAn idiom. It's just around the corner and I'm feeling pretty good, pretty good. How aboutyourself?

RobYeah, I'm fine, thanks. Nearly finishing up at university and looking forward to the summer.Which is, just as you said, "right around the corner."

BobAre you going to do any rock climbing or camping or outdoor activities?

  • 3RobDefinitely. In the U. K. I'll do some rock climbing.

BobOh, so youre going to the U.K. When are you going to go?

    RobTowards the end of August.

    BobEnd of August?

    RobYeah.

BobO.K. Because ticket prices - airline ticket prices - are cheaper.

    RobThey are. Yes, that's right.

BobIt's expensive isn't it? So, you go camping ever?

RobI haven't been that often actually. I usually tend to go climbing.

    BobDo you ever climb trees?

    (laughter)

RobWhen I was a boy, sure. Yes definitely. And you?

BobYeah, I used to climb trees a lot. I guess I'm a tree climber, not a rock climber.

    RobPapers from trees, isn't it?

BobVery good, Rob. What a connection2!

    (Laughter)

    RobYes, trees...incredible.

    BobI like trees.

  • 4RobThey're very nice.

BobAnd I think that with global warming3, trees are going to become even more important. I'dlike to ask a favor of you, Rob.

    RobSure, by all means.

BobCan you plant a tree this summer?

    RobI could try.

    (laughter)

    BobFor the earth.

    RobFor the earth, well yeah.

BobWould you do that for me, Rob?

    (laughter)

RobI'll have to see what I can do.

BobAnd I'd just like to just ask all our listeners out there4 to plant a tree or two.

    RobYeah, that's a good idea.

    (laughter)

BobIt's interesting. They say that, well, we all produce carbon5 - driving and using electricityand gas. They say that maybe the average American, or, maybe a person living in anindustrialized nation6 uses....well, basically needs to plant about 40 trees to offset7 theamount of carbon they produce in their lifetime. The carbon - as we know with globalwarming - it goes up in the air and stays in the atmosphere. Anyway, so I don't know howwe got off on this topic.

    RobTrees, they are very important.

BobI like trees. And I like old growth8. Old growth trees mean, old trees....big, big trees.

  • 5RobIs there something about the cedars9 at the moment on the West coast of America?

BobI don't know, what have you heard? Cedar trees.

    RobThey're, basically dying out.

    BobOh no!

    RobYeah.

    BobYour kidding!

    RobThat's what I heard, yeah.

    BobOh that's terrible.

RobMaybe you should look into it?

BobWhen I go back to the States10...this week.

    RobPlant some seeds.

BobWell, I'm going to check into it. Will you plant a cedar tree, Rob?

    (laughter)

    RobI'll try, if I can.

BobPlant one for your son - or your sons.

    RobGood idea.

    BobO.K.

    (transition music)

  • 6BobListener email.

    RobListener email, yes.

BobYea, we had a question about a movie - or a movie question.

RobYea, from Alla. Alla asked us if people are visiting America or Britain....Alla seemed thinkthat he discovered that...

    BobHe or she?

RobI believe it's he, sorry Alla, if youre a lady..

    (laughter)

    BobHow about a he-she?

RobI'll refer to you as, a he, just in case.

BobI don't know. I seem to remember it being a woman. I could be wrong.

RobOh, is it lady? I'm sorry Alla.

BobI don't know. I could be wrong.

RobI'll say you. Is that okay Alla, just in case? If you can verify it for us.

    BobO.K. Anyway

    RobWhen she....

    BobShe or he.

    (laughter)

Rob...went to Britain, or, goes to Britain. She said that she was surprised by the factthat British cinemas....movie theaters in America.

  • 7BobYes

RobBritish cinema have a main picture and a support picture.

BobA support picture - I've heard that term before.

RobShe's actually asked if this is true. And, if so, is it the same in America? Well, in Britain wedon't really have a support movie.

    BobYou mean, a preview11?

    RobWe have previews and trailers12.

    BobOh, advertising upcoming movies?

RobWe really only have just the main movie in Britain. At least just these days.

BobSame in the U. S. You go in and there is only one movie. They used to have doublefeatures, which were popular. You could watch a movie and then there would be anintermission, then there would be another movie. Especially, when they had drive-ins13.Drive-in theaters are kind of an American invention. They're pretty much gone now....but,drive-in theaters, you drive in with your car, in a field, and watch the movie on a big screen. Those used to have double features. But yea, we don't really have...what, what did you callit?

RobA support film, followed by the main picture.

BobNo, it's just the main picture. Although, if your going to a concert, a lot of times they have anopening act.

    RobOr a support act.

    BobWe would say opening act.

RobWe would say supporting act. Who are usually very good actually. They get the crowdreally....lively.

    Bob

  • 8A warm-up type. I mean that's your job on The Bob and Rob Show. Yes, you get meworked up.

    (laughter)

RobYea, so I don't think there's any support films in Britain or America. But in Britain we havesome cinemas which offer late night showings and sometimes, usually cult-type14 cinemas, will have screen one, two and three back to back.

BobO.K. Another email we got is kind of nice...this morning from a Frenchman. Said that heuses the Bob and Rob Show to wake his wife up in the morning.

    RobWow, hey.

BobI can't imagine anything worse in the world then being woken up...

    (laughter)

    Robby us.

Bob..by us. He must really hate his wife..right?

    (laughter)

BobHow can he do that to her? Anyway, apparently on the days that she listens to the Bob andRob Show.....he says, and I'm quoting him here, he says that she walks around with a smileon her face.

RobWow. Hey, that's a nice email.

    BobOh yeah.

    RobThank you very much.

BobIt just makes what we do seem so special.

RobRight. Wow, unbelievable, but well, yea.

BobAnyway, we don't advise you ever doing this at home - waking someone up using the Boband Rob Show. They might turn violent.

  • 9(laughter)

BobIt might be good torture, though. If you wanted to get some information out of someone. Ifthey had a secret and you wanted to torture them...

    RobPlay our show.

    Bob...play our show.

    (laughter)

BobLoop it15, loop....over and over....and I think you could get the information very quickly.

    (transition music

BobO.K. Let's move on to phrasal verbs.

RobPhrasal verbs. Okay, this week we're going to look at the phrasal verb...to break up.

    BobTo break up.

RobYea. Breakup, has a several meanings actually...three meanings. And one is literally theliteral16 sense, to break something up into pieces.

BobLike...the ship broke up at sea. Broke into pieces. Break up a cracker into pieces.

RobYea, right. Break a cracker up into pieces.

BobOr, like, if you....let's say we had a big fight, we might break up our relationship....The Boband Rob Showso we might break up our....

    RobYea, friendship, relationship, yea.

Bob...our friendship broke up, because Rob was jealous that I'm such a funny guy.

    (laughter)

RobYea, so that of course, can also refer to....say, for example, dispersing a crowd. In a riot the

  • 10

    police broke up the demonstration.

BobYea, I should also say, beforeend a relationship...break up is often used with a romanticcouple. So, I broke up with my girlfriend.

RobYea. Oh, sorry to hear that Bob.

    (laughter)

BobCute, Rob. Anyway, I think that's pretty clear. Ancient Japanese English studySecret.

    RobAncient Japanese English study Secret.

BobOn a prior show, I thinkI can't rememberwe did a little interrupting.....how to interrupt. And I guess this would be Part 2......kind ofinterrupting or contributing to adiscussion....adding something of your own. And what are some expressions we can say,Rob?

RobYou could say, "Can I say something"?

BobYea, or you could say, "Can I add something here"?

RobOr, "I'd like to say something, if I may?

BobOr, you could just as a general question as a way to interrupt. For example, "Can I ask aquestion"?

RobOr, "Excuse me, may I ask something"?

BobOkay, so these are ways to either interrupt or contribute to what people are talking about.Without coming across as rude

RobRight. Yea, this is a natural way to do this.

BobYou wouldn't want to just cut in17 with your opinion.

    RobOr butt in18.

  • 11

BobButt in. Butt in is a good word. Butt in means to interrupt. B-U-T-T.

RobYea, we did that a few weeks ago.

BobYea. O.K. Ancient Japanese English Study Secret.

BobAnyway, today we're going to do a public service announcement. And since we're talkingabout trees, summertime, and whatnot...this is a public service announcement aboutcampfires and being careful not to start forest fires.

RobRight. Are you going to go camping in the summer, Bob?

BobI probably will, but I usually don't use a campfire. I use a camping stove. But, you still haveto be careful. And this commercial...this PSA has Smokey the Bear in it. And I shouldexplain that Smokey the Bear - Smokey means smoke. Smokey the Bear is a verypopular mascot19 for the United States Forest Service. It's a government agency and theyuse Smokey the Bear - it's kind of a cartoon charactersometimes you see Smokey theBear - someone dressed up as Smokey the Bear - trying to educate people aboutpreventing forest fires. Or using fires safely. So, this is kind of a kids public serviceannouncement warning people to be careful with fire. So it's Smokey the Bear. Only youcan prevent forest fires.

    RobExcellent

BobO. K. So let's listen to it.

(Owl hoots, steps crunching in dry leaves)DAD: Come on honey, suns setting, lets get the campfire startedCHILD: Okay, Ill get my shovel and a bucketDAD: Umm, dont you think its a little late to go to the beach?CHILD: Smokey Bear says, that before we start a fire, we should have a bucket of waterand shovel in case our fire gets out of control.DAD: Fine, Ill gather the wood thenCHILD: And Ill gather the rocksDAD: We cant burn rocks, silly20

CHILD: Theyre not for burning, theyre to make a fire ring. And lets build our fire over here, not so close to our tent.(Owl hoots)DAD: So whered you learn so much about making campfires safe?CHILD: From Smokey Bear, dad. He says [low voice] Only You, Can Prevent Wildfires

  • 12

    RobO.K. Yea, very informative.

BobSo I really hope that youre careful Rob. Because if you start a forest fire, that means youare going to have to plant a lot trees....to make up for your irresponsibility.

    (laughter)

RobI'll be careful Bob, don't worry.

BobSo please, don't start a forest fire.

    RobI'll try not to.

    BobO.K.

    (transition music)

BobAll right - Both Sides of the Pond.

RobAll right - Both Sides of the Pond. Today I thought we could look at a few vocabularydifferences between Britain and America. In Britain we callfete, something where...

    BobA fete?

RobDo you know what a fete is?

BobI don't think so. I'll have to look at a list that you prepared here. Field day? I still don'tunderstand.

    RobA fete is something.....

    BobF-E-T-E ?

RobYeah. This is something where...perhaps which a school organizes, and there may besome games, and activities for the staff and children.

    BobA festival?

  • 13

RobYes, it's kind of like a festival.

BobI guess we might say a field day...or a

RobOr maybe the town has a little fete on it's lawn selling bits of food.....a community type...

BobYeah, I guess, uhh.. field day or carnivals. Or, if their selling things we might call it abazaar. B-A-Z-A-A-R But that's all I can think of. O.K. If you go gambling at a casino, a lotof people like the slot machines. How would you say a slot machine in the U.K.?

    RobYes. We said, fruit machines.

BobWell that's interesting because of the fruit. That's why....

    Rob..they call it fruit machines.

    BobO.K. what's next?

RobWhen a guy in Britain gets married - rather just before he gets married - he has one lastnight of freedom, and we call that a stag night. Usually organized by his friends.

BobYou know, we would probably saya bachelor party. B-A-C-H-E-L-O-R...or, stag party isalso common. But I think the most common way is saying bachelor party. And of course, ifit's the bride, or the female, we call it a bachelorette party.

    RobOh, that's interesting.

BobDo you call it bachelorette party?

RobNo we don't use that expression in Britain. We say a hen night. She's having a hennight.

BobLike a chicken, a hen? Oh that's great. I like that a lot better. A hen night.

    RobAll the girls together.

    Bob

  • 14

    Like a female chicken. Hen.

    RobYea

BobOh that's much better. I'm going to start using hen night. It could also be Japanese...hen 21 means strange.

    RobThat's right.

    BobSo, it's a strange night.

RobOf course. Which they usually do end up getting pretty strange, don't they?

    (laughter)

BobYes, yes. O.K. That's pretty good. Thanks Rob.

    (transition music)

BobAll right. Well, I guess we're going to wrap things up22 here. Thanks so much to everyonewhos donated.

    RobYes, yes.

BobWe really appreciate it. And if you listen to the show regularly, please consider making adonation.

    RobThat would be great.

    BobIt's very motivating.

RobAll your support is greatly appreciated.

BobYes, well said, Rob. The song today that were going to end with is called "Trees." Wetalked a little bit about trees, Smokey the Bear, camping

    RobTry not to burn any...

    Bob

  • 15

Rob's going to plant a tree this summer.

    RobAre you, Bob?

BobI already did. I planted forty. I actually donated money to an organization that plants thetrees for you. So I gave them $50. And they go out and plant forty trees for you

    RobThat's great.

BobYea, would you like to give me some money and I can give it to them?

    RobI'll do it directly.

    (laughter)

BobAnyway, the song is called Trees, by T. Nile, and we got the song from podshow.com. Gothere if you'd like to learn more about this artist, and check the show notes for a link. Solet's wrap this up and hope you enjoyed the show. And well talk to you next week. Byeeveryone.
