LSC SAFER RECRUITMENT POLICY

THE STUDENT’S JOURNEY

Language Study Centres operates a strict safer recruitment policy and all staff will have checks on their suitability to work with children.

All applicants will be required to supply an up-to-date CV (any gaps in employment history must be explained satisfactorily) and the contact details of 2 suitable referees (including former employees) which will be checked prior to employment. The referees will be asked specifically about your suitability to work with children.

All employees will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) check unless they provide details of their DBS Update Service subscription. Appropriate local police checks will be required from applicants living overseas.

All employees will be expected to provide proof of identity and all relevant qualifications (originals only) – copies will be taken for our records.

There is much more to an LSC course than just the Academic Programme. Below you will find an example timetable of what the students will be doing on their stay.

While you are only responsible for delivering the English lessons, it’s a good to be aware of what else is happening in the centre. This will give the students a more complete experience and you can speak to them about what they are doing.

As you can see, students are only in lessons for half of each weekday. Even though the students only have their lessons in the morning or afternoon, we usually have classes running throughout the day (as a new set of students will come in after lunch).

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A TEACHER

EXAMPLE TEACHING TIMETABLE

As a teacher you will be expected to use the LSC curriculum to teach interesting and dynamic classes throughout the weeks. Below you’ll see a typical day in the life of a teacher for LSC. During this time you will also be observed two or three times by the Director of Studies (first as a drop-in and then with a second

more formal observation). You will also occasionally be expected to help with admin and to attend CPD sessions. Of course, on a summer school programme, your schedule can vary from one day to the next, so this timetable is an example and may not ultimately reflect an average day at your centre.

OUR CURRICULUMAt LSC we use our own in-house coursebooks. Each student gets given a copy that they write in and get to take home, meaning there won’t be endless photocopying for you. The coursebooks will form the basis of your lessons and each comes with a teacher’s book with lessons plans and additional ideas.

Where is head office? Language Study Centres head office is based in Highbury, London. Please see our website for more information.

I have only just obtained my TEFL qualification. Can I still work for you? Yes, you can! We’re always looking to recruit first time teachers who are motivated, dedicated and responsible.

I am available in August but not in July. Can I still work for LSC? Our peak period is in July, so we require you to be available for most of the month. The greater your availability then the greater your chance of being offered a summer contract!

Will I need to have a DBS check to apply? What is the process?Yes. If you aren’t already on the DBS update service, then we will process a check on your behalf. We will split the cost between us 50-50, meaning your contribution is £24.40. The cost will come out of your first pay check.

I am not an EU citizen - can I still work for you? If you have a working visa and permission to work in the UK, then yes. We will need to see proof of your right to work in the UK prior to offering you a contract. We’re unable to sponsor Visa applicants. You’ll also need a valid National Insurance number and a UK bank account.

How long will my contract be? This will depend on the centre. All of our centres have different opening and closing dates due to campus availability and student availability. Contracts will vary from 2 – 9 weeks.

How many hours a week will I work? You will either be working on a part-time or standard timetable: Part-Time Timetable: You will have on average 15 contact teaching hours per week Monday to Friday (mornings or afternoons only). Standard Timetable: You will have on average 30 contact teaching hours per week Monday to Friday (mornings and afternoons).

Can you provide me with accommodation? We have very limited residential positions available. If you stay in accommoadtion you will receive full board and an en-suite room. There will be a deduction from your wages of £7.55 per evening.

Will I be able to use LSC as a reference for future employers?Yes, absolutely!

TRAINING Will I have to attend a training day before my centre opens? Yes, you'll need to attend training before you start work. We will hold training days in:

London - 16th JuneBournemouth - 18th JuneHastings - 25th June

If you can't make any of these days, then please let us know as soon as possible.

Will I need to prepare anything before attending the training day? You will need to complete an online safeguarding course before the training day.Details will be sent out nearer the time.

What do I need to bring to the induction? During the recruitment process we will ask you to email copies of your degree, TEFL qualification/s and ID (passport or driver’s licence) to us. It is essential that you bring the originals to the induction day.

Will I be observed teaching during the summer? Yes, you will be observed teaching twice. You will then be given oral and written feedback on the observation. Observations are carried out by a qualified Director of Studies as a means of quality control and to help in your teacher development.

Do you carry out teacher training/development sessions while at the centres? A teacher development workshop is held during your induction day. To supplement this during your time working with us we will also be running paid teacher development sessions at the centre. These sessions are voluntary and you don’t have to attend, but this is the perfect opportunity for you to hone your skills and share your ideas with other teachers.

WORKING AT A LSC CENTREWho do I report to?You report to your Director of Studies.

What happens the day that I arrive at the centre? Typically, you will meet all the Management staff and become familiar with your centre surroundings. Your DoS will hold a meeting to introduce you to the team and get you set up and ready to start teaching.

Where do the students come from and how old are they? Most of our students come from Italy, Sweden and China, but we welcome students from: Spain, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Chile, Greece, Russia, Turkey, Poland, Ukraine, Norway, Romania and more. The mix of students you have will depend on which

centre you are in and what period. You could have a mix of twelve different nationalities, or just one or two. The majority of our students are aged between 12-17, but in St Albans there will be some 8-10-year olds.

How many students will there be in my centre? There will be between 40-500 students in your centre at any one time. The number of students will depend on the centre you are working at.

How many teachers will I be working with? This will depend on the centre but there could anywhere from 2-20 teachers working alongside you.

Will I have to write my own lesson plans? Lesson plans/guidelines have already been written for you to use in class. You will, however, be required to write formal lesson plans when you are observed by your Director of Studies or the LSC Academic Manager.

How many students will I have in a class? There is a maximum of 15 students per class.

Will there be an interactive whiteboard/internet access in my classroom? Yes, all our centres will have an interactive white board and access to the internet in each classroom. If for any reason our room allocations are changed and we no longer have access to an interactive whiteboard, a standard white board and CD player will be provided.

What teaching resources will we be provided with? The course book will be the primary resource for teachers. It provides adequate and varied material for students staying for a three-week course. We also provide supplementary materials for teachers on their USB stick, which they can use on the whiteboard without the need for any printing. You will be shown how to effectively use your USB stick during training.

Will we have access to a photocopier? We don’t have access to the photocopying facilities of the schools/universities we use. Your DoS will have access to a printer, so if there is anything you need printed out for your classes then you can email it to them. Because you’ll be using our in-house materials, there shouldn’t be the need for lots of photocopying/printing.

What is the dress code? As an employee of Language Study Centres you will be representing the company so please be presentable in appearance. Professional, smart-casual dress is expected.

Can I park at the centre? This will depend on the centre. Limited parking may be available and can’t be guaranteed. Please let the

recruitment team know if you require parking when you are interviewed.

PAYMENT How and when will I be paid? You will be paid weekly in arrears. Teachers work Monday-Friday. You should collect your weekly timesheet from the DOS on a Monday. It is your responsibility to complete and hand your timesheet back to the DOS on a Friday. Your DOS will then submit your timesheet to head office and your wages will be credited to your bank account on the following Friday.

Do I receive holiday pay? Yes, we pay statutory holiday pay.

I am a student in full time education. Will I be taxed? When completing your employee details form you will find a section relating to TAX DETAILS – STUDENTS ONLY. You must complete this section stating that you will be attending full time education until after 5th April next year. If this section is completed correctly you will not be taxed whilst working with LSC. Please note that National Insurance contributions will still be deducted.

Do I get paid for attending Assessment/training days?Yes, you will be paid £50 for attending training.

What deductions will there be on my pay?You must return all materials, LSC lanyards and any university campus passes to your DoS. Failure to do this may result in a delay in your wages and may result in deduction being made from your final payment.
