Face to Face Workshop Descriptions
Close Reading: Analyzing Texts with Critical LensesClose reading is a term that educators are hearing more frequently. No longer is it enough for students to read a text at the surface level, they must read deeper. Even in early grades, students are learning to think deeply about text using higher level thinking skills. In this workshop, participants will explore the concept of close reading as defined by Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey. Text-dependent questions and strategies for promoting deep reading will also be discussed.
Getting Them on the Write Path: Writing in the K-2 ClassroomWhat does it mean to be a writer? By the time children enter kindergarten, they are writers! They come to us full of stories to share and ideas to express, but they don’t have the experience to put it in conventional print. This workshop will address strategies for recognizing the thinking process that goes into developing our youngest writers and supports to have in place as they begin their writing journey. Teachers will walk away with a better understanding of how to teach young writers through conversation, read-alouds, and share time, while nurturing them down the “write” path to discover the writer inside.
Face to Face Workshop Descriptions
Guided Reading and Beyond: Differentiation in the ELAR ClassroomGuided reading is a practice that has been proven to be effective, yet many teachers still struggle with implementing it in a meaningful way. This workshop will paint a picture of what guided reading looks like in an elementary classroom and how it changes throughout grades. Participants will gain an understanding of the components of a lesson that will guide readers to use effective strategies for processing text. This session will also highlight other forms of differentiation and how each can be implemented within a typical ELAR classroom.
Inquiring Minds: Using Essential Questions, Leveled Questions, and Socratic Seminar in the ELAR ClassroomCritical thinkers employ a series of questions to explore an issue, an idea, or something intriguing. In this workshop, participants will learn how essential questions impact the focus and direction of a lesson, discuss how to instruct students to develop quality questions, and explore how to use proper questioning to drive a Socratic seminar in the classroom.
Face to Face Summer Workshop Descriptions
Reading and Writing Across the Content AreasLiteracy across the content areas is essential if students are to succeed in the classroom. Secondary teachers, across the curriculum, face the challenge of helping students comprehend their subject area texts. This proves especially difficult if students lack the necessary literacy skills required in order to comprehend. This workshop stems from the urgent need to build reading, writing, and thinking across the content area classrooms. Teachers will explore research-based strategies that focus on ways for teachers to use reading, writing, speaking, and listening in the classroom to develop student literacy.
Reconstructing the Literacy BlockIs it possible to create a literacy block where teachers meet with students in small groups, provide daily explicit instruction in both reading and writing while maintaining an effective learning environment? The answer is an overwhelming YES! In this training, participants will learn how to reconstruct the literacy block in order to build balanced literacy into a daily 90 minute schedule.
