History of the ProgramHanwood started the program in Canada in 2003
Hanwood partners with EduChosun, a subsidiary of the Chosun newspaper, the largest in Korea
Twelve Manitoba School Divisions have hosted 650 students
HANWOOD INC.
Program DetailsHanwood places students in Canadian schools with same age and gender classmates
Students live with Canadian students’ families
Eligible Koreans are 10-14 years, in Grades 4-8
Students must have taken extra English classes and are recommended by their Korean English teachers

Program SessionsStudents stay for short-term (approximately 8 -16 weeks) or full-year and participate in one of the following sessions:
Fall (starts bebinning of September)
Winter (starts beginning of January)
The Winter session is the most popular, as this is the Korean two-month school break.

A Profile of Korean ParticipantsSouth Korea, with a population of 48 million, is about the same size as Lake Superior
Most students are from Seoul, a city of 10 million
Students eligible for the Hanwood program take additional private classes, several times a week
Students are academically focused and above average in Math and Computer Science

Roles and ResponsibilitiesHanwood will
recruit and interview Korean students
pay tuition fees to participating school divisions
organize the program with Korean students, schools and homestay families
provide support for students, schools and families
give homestay families resource materials and advice

Roles and ResponsibilitiesSchools/School Divisions will
promote the program to schools, staff and parents
identify and recruit potentially interested families
place only one student in a class to reinforce language immersion
include students in regular classes
prepare subject reports for students to submit to their Korean teachers

Roles and ResponsibilitiesHomestay Families will
act as a substitute family and include the student in all activities
foster and praise use of English
ensure child attends school and completes homework
provide accommodations and three meals daily
be present for student airport arrival and departure
