ENGLISH GRADE SEVEN------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ PRE-HONORS ENGLISH 7 Full Year

Purpose: The English program is designed to formalize the basic skills in language, mechanics and composition acquired in the elementary years and to establish a foundation for the secondary years.

Description: The seventh-grade English course of study focuses on the following: grammar; writing (informational, narrative, and opinion/argumentative); informational text; effective discussions; text structures; and analysis of how particular literary elements of a novel interact.

Requirements: Each student will employ proper grammar, spelling, and vocabulary skills in writing sentences and compositions and in completing book reviews/reports. Composition will include formal lessons in the writing process: prewriting, composing, evaluating, revising, editing, and publishing. Students will respond to specific topics through descriptive, narrative, persuasive, and expository writing and creative assignments and will practice for the Pennsylvania State System of Assessment (PSSA) test.Presentations in both formal and informal speaking can be expected, along with reading nonfiction texts and novels. The Pre-Honors curriculum explores topics in greater depth and in a broader format than in the College Bound English 7 course, in order to prepare students for work in Pre-Honors 8, should they qualify for the course.

Purpose: The English program is designed to strengthen and broaden a student’s thinking, reading, writing, and speaking skills. Students are expected to have an understanding of fundamentals, as eighth grade will build on work done in previous school years.

Description: English focuses on five basic components: grammar/usage, spelling/vocabulary, composition, literature, and public speaking.

Requirements: Students will employ proper grammar and vocabulary skills in their speaking and in writings; both grammar and vocabulary are taught directly through given texts. Literature will include selections from the class anthology as well as novels (both self-selected as part of the Accelerated Reader program and teacher-assigned). Writings may include both assigned and self-selected work and will include research, projects, book reviews, and responses to specific topics through descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive writing. Students will also complete several practice writings to prepare for the Pennsylvania State System of School Assessment (PSSA) test in writing. Public speaking will require a number of both formal and informal presentations. The Pre-Honors English curriculum is more demanding as its goal is to prepare students for success in Honors English 9, if the student chooses that course and meets the requirements for it. Topics are explored more deeply and broadly in Pre-Honors.

Prerequisites: College Bound English 7 with a minimum of 95% average at the end of the third marking period or successful completion of Pre-Honors English 7.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ COLLEGE BOUND ENGLISH 8 Full Year

Purpose: The eighth-grade English program is designed to strengthen and broaden a student’s thinking, reading, writing, and speaking skills. Students are expected to have an understanding of fundamentals, as eighth grade will build on work done in previous school years.

Description: Eighth grade English focuses on five basic components: grammar/usage, spelling/vocabulary, composition, literature, and public speaking.

Literature will include selections from the class anthology as well as novels (both self-selected as part of the Accelerated Reader program and teacher-assigned). Purpose: Health education is designed to provide for the social, mental, emotional and physical development of each child. At the completion of this course, the student will be provided with health information and decision making skills that will assist him/her to make mature judgments about both present and future health decisions.

Course Description: The scope of Health education will cover; Peer Pressure, Alcohol, Drugs and Tobacco, Decision-making and Refusal Skills, Basic First Aid, and AIDS Awareness.

Requirements: All students will be required to perform satisfactorily on objective and essay tests and quizzes. Homework will be assigned and will include text readings, outside readings, as well as written assignments. The student is also expected to participate in class discussions, oral reports, co-operative learning groups, and role-playing situations. Students may also be assigned independent or group projects and written exercises and essays.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------PHYSICAL EDUCATION 4 periods weekly / all year

Purpose: The program exists to help develop each students’ neuromuscular system, cardio-respiratory fitness, endurance, flexibility, agility, balance, muscular strength, speed, power, coordination, self- confidence and social skills, through exposure to a greater variety of physical activities, sport skills, lifetime skills and a knowledge of various sports and recreational activities.

Description: The scope of Health education will cover: Alcohol, Drugs and Tobacco, Mental and Social Health, First Aid, Human Sexuality, AIDS, Nutrition, Cardiovascular Health, Communicable Diseases, Fitness Concepts, and Body Systems.

Requirements: All students will be required to participate in the physical education program. They will be required to wear an authorized Physical Education uniform, and provide a written doctor’s excuse or an excuse from his/her parents when unable to participate in class. Student grading will be based on daily class participation, daily preparation (uniform), and knowledge and skill testing for each unit. A complete uniform of regulation gray T-shirt, navy shorts, white socks and sneakers is required. Points will be deducted for missing uniform or parts. (-2 no socks,-10 no Sneakers, -10 no Uniform and -5 No T-shirt or shorts) On the third time no uniform, anytime during the year; the result is one night detention.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 2-3 periods weeklyPurpose: Physical Education is designed for all students who attend junior high regardless of physical, mental, or social skills. Students will be able to participate in various activities which will develop them physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally.

Course Description: Students will spend a major part of class time learning physical skills and participating in game situations to practice these skills. Also rules of various games, proper etiquette, proper execution, and proper scoring will be stressed. The physical education program will consist of instruction in and knowledge of a variety of types of activities such as individual sports, individual and conditioning exercises, selected combative team sports and lifetime sports. The course will also involve learning the fundamentals and rules of these activities.

Requirements: At the end of the year, the students will have acquired a working knowledge of the fundamentals and through participation will have improved the performance of these fundamentals and skills. They will also be able to demonstrate team-work, cooperation and observance of safety rules. A complete uniform of regulation T-shirt, shorts, white socks and sneakers is required. Points will be deducted for missing uniform or parts. Purpose: Algebra 1 is an acceleration course which provides the necessary background needed for future math courses.

Description: Algebra 1 is a highly accelerated course designed for students with exceptional math ability for their age and grade level. The course includes the following topics: Exploring Expressions, Equations, and Functions, Rational Numbers, Solving Linear Equations, Using Proportional Reasoning, Graphing Relations and Functions, Analyzing Linear Equations, Solving Linear Inequalities, Solving Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities, Exploring Polynomials, Factoring Polynomials, Quadratic Functions and Rational Expressions.

Requirements: Tests and/or quizzes will be given and homework will be assigned regularly. Students will be expected to take an active role in daily classroom activities and to complete all assignments.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ PRE-ALGEBRA

PURPOSE: Pre-Algebra is a course designed for those students preparing to take Algebra 1 the next school year and preparing for college level math courses.

DESCRIPTION: The course includes the following topics: Problem Solving, Applications with Decimals, Statistics and Data Analysis, Patterns and Number Sense, Applications with Fractions, Introduction to Algebra, Integers, Geometry, Area, Surface Area and Volume, Ratio, Proportion, Percent, Applications with Percent.

REQUIREMENTS: Tests and/or quizzes will be given and homework will be assigned regularly. Students will be expected to take an active role in daily classroom activities and to complete all assignments.

REQUIREMENTS: Tests and/or quizzes will be given and homework will be assigned regularly. Students will be expected to take an active role in daily classroom activities and to complete all assignments.

PREREQUISITES: Students must have completed Algebra 1 with at least an 84% average.

PURPOSE: CB Pre-Algebra is the first course within a sequence of rigorous academic Algebra courses. CB Algebra 1 is the required course following CB Pre-Algebra. This course prepares students for future college level academic math courses.

DESCRIPTION: The course includes the following topics: Real Number System, Rational Numbers, Irrational Numbers, Exponent Properties, Algebraic Properties, Scientific Notation, Exploring Expressions, Equations, and Functions, Solving Linear Equations, Using Proportional Reasoning, Graphing Relations and Functions, Writing Linear Equations, Analyzing Linear Equations, Solving System of Equations, Finding Volume of 3-D figures, Pythagorean Theorem, Transformation of figures and Functions and Data Analysis and Probability.

PURPOSE: Algebra 1A is an introductory algebra course. This course will provide basic algebraic principles and fundamentals. Students enrolled in this course will also be enrolled in PSSA 8 simultaneously.

DESCRIPTION: The course includes the following topics: Data and Graphs, Variables, Expressions, Real Numbers, Solving Linear Equations, Functions and Graphs, Linear Inequalities, Linear Functions and Graphs, Systems ofLinear Equations.

REQUIREMENTS: Tests and/or quizzes will be given and homework will be assigned regularly. Students will be expected to take an active role in daily classroom activities and to complete all assignments.

PREREQUISITES: Student must have successfully passed Math 7, or earned below 76% in Academic Math.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MUSIC COURSES GRADES SEVEN AND EIGHT------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------CHORUS 7 2 periods weekly

Purpose: Chorus is offered to students who have an interest in singing in a large group. The class provides students with the opportunity to develop skills necessary to become comprehensive musicians.

Description: Chorus is an organized group of male and female voices that focuses on strengthening the skills needed to perform and understand choral music. Students are taught basic singing skills including tone quality, breath control, diction, musical phrasing, musical style, harmonization, and vocal balance. Emphasis is also placed on the theoretical aspects of music, such as intervals, dynamics, rhythm, and tempo. Vocal exercises used are sight- reading and solfeggio. A wide variety of both secular and sacred music is used as well as specialized vocal exercises to achieve these skills. The students develop leadership, cooperativeness, self-confidence, and stage presence in addition to developing proper vocal techniques. Students will participate in at least two performances.

Requirements: Each student is expected to take an active part during rehearsals by participating to the best of his/her ability. Students are also expected to be present for all performances.

Prerequisites: A good attitude and an open mind----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------ORCHESTRA Grades 7 and 8 Full Year

Purpose: This course exists for the student who desires orchestral performing experiences. It is open to any stringed instrument player in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades who has performed lesson materials satisfactorily through at least book two of Essential Elements for Strings. Wind and percussion players are chosen from the eighth and ninth grades by the orchestra and band directors. These are the more advanced students who are capable of playing their parts without a great deal of teacher coaching. At the completion of this course, students should demonstrate music reading skills and instrumental playing techniques acceptable at the junior high school level.

Description: Orchestra integrates all families of musical instruments and provides for the study of orchestral literature from the various musical periods. Musical growth is stimulated through rehearsals and performance expectations. The full orchestra meets one period a week. Stringed instrument players meet two additional times or a total of three periods per week. This course facilitates improvement of reading skills and provides a medium for the investigation of a great portion of musical literature - the symphonic repertoire.Some comparisons of stylistic trends and forms in related arts are coordinated with the study of the orchestral repertoire.

Requirements: Students will participate in all concerts and after school rehearsals presented by the orchestra. Pupils will arrive at rehearsals with all needed music, instruments, and equipment. Students will be expected to practice musical compositions on an individual basis in order to perform the music at the expected proficiency level.Prerequisites: String Players - Successful completion of Sixth Grade String Orchestra. Wind and Percussion Players - Orchestra and Band Director Recommendation.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------STRINGED INSTRUMENT LESSONS Grades 7 and 8 Full Year

Purpose: This course exists for the student who desires training on an orchestral stringed instrument. Students playing in junior high orchestra are required to take this course to further develop their playing ability. At the completion of this course, students should demonstrate reading skills and instrumental techniques acceptable at the junior high school level.

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to develop and improve the basic skills necessary to play the stringed instruments of the orchestra. Musical growth is encouraged through a knowledge of the fundamentals of music, terminology of music, and the knowledge of the techniques required in playing the orchestral stringed instruments. There are homogeneous instrument groupings with students placed in various groups dependent upon their playing level and years of study. Each class of students meets once per week for a lesson. All lessons are on a rotating schedule. Students taking private lessons will be placed in various chamber groups. These chamber groups will be less restricted giving the more advanced students more opportunities to perform. As with the other string lesson groups, the chamber groups will also meet on a weekly rotating basis.

Requirements: Students will attend all lessons unless a test is scheduled for their solid subject class. Pupils will arrive at lessons with all needed music, instruments, and equipment.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Sixth Grade Stringed Instrument Lessons.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------BAND Grade 7 Full Year

Purpose: This band is an intermediate band designed to give the student further experience in a large ensemble. At the completion of this course the student should possess the fundamentals of band playing to be eligible for the Concert or Symphonic Band.

Course Description: The 7th Grade Band uses a structural approach to playing band literature. The playing of rhythms, phrasing, and sectional work are essential for the development of good playing. To qualify for the next band the student must master the basic components of playing in the large ensemble. The skills required for band are scale playing, phrasing and different dynamic levels as prescribed by the music. The band meets three periods each week during the school year. In addition, each student will receive a weekly lesson on a rotating schedule.

Requirements: Each student through individual and ensemble playing will demonstrate knowledge of phrasing, musicianship and rhythm patterns by adapting their uses in the band literature. Students must be willing to participate in all phases of the band including participation in a weekly rotating sectional lesson, rehearsals, and concerts. The student's academic achievement must be satisfactory to participate in the band program. Numerous instrumental concepts are introduced and reviewed using selected band literature and exercise in the rehearsal and lesson setting.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of a full year of band lessons, and recommendation of elementary instrumental music teacher.

Purpose: Developmental Reading is designed to give students an opportunity to make connections between reading and writing by furthering knowledge of literary genre, improving comprehension skills, and utilizing reading strategies and critical reading/thinking skills.

PRE HONORS SCIENCE 8 Requirements: Students are expected to review notes continuously, and to do all reading assignments. Application of cumulative knowledge is a big part of the course. Homework, problem solving, data interpretation, projects or research may be used to augment regular class and lab activities.

Prerequisites: A grade of at least 95% average at the end of the third marking period in 7 th grade science. Score in the top level on a standardized science test. One of the areas to be explored is drawing with graphite pencils, charcoal, pastels, black and colored ink and glue! Other areas include painting, calligraphy, sculpture, ceramics (hand building and wheel throwing), printmaking, graphic design, and mixed media. Students will be encouraged to explore their personal world for motivation, and develop creative thinking skills to assist in adding meaning to their work. Art production will be enriched with exposure to Art History, aesthetics, and art criticism.

Requirements: Confidence in their art ability will increase as students apply the basic skills and techniques to complete each art project.

Prerequisites : An open mind and positive outlook! All students will be scheduled for this course.

Purpose: Contemporary Living Skills (CLS) is an introductory course designed for all students to gain independence in personal and living skills.

It includes the following content areas: decision making, consumerism, child development, conservation practices, foods/nutrition/wellness. Emphasis in all five areas is based upon building life skills. Content is presented by means of videos, study guides, worksheets, demonstrations, etc. Labs are used to expand and reinforce the content given in class. A "learn by doing" approach is emphasized, especially in the area of foods/nutrition/wellness.

Requirements: Tests and quizzes will be given periodically; however, students are also evaluated on classroom performance. Each student is expected to keep a well-organized folder which includes all class papers. Grades are given at the end of the 9 week grading period.Prerequisite: None. STEM 7 5 periods weekly for one nine weeks Purpose: STEM 7 is designed to show the student different technological areas and how science, technology engineering and math can be applied to solve real world problems. Materials, tools, and energy are used in combination with knowledge and information to complete assignments. Team work, interpersonal cooperation, communication, listening, creative thinking and reading skills will be emphasized.

Course Description: This course is a laboratory class that exposes the student to many areas of technology. The topics include; Robotics, Engineering, and Manufacturing. These units are all introductory and exploratory. An appreciation of technology and the metric system of measuring is stressed throughout the course. The robotics unit is based upon curriculum materials developed by the Carnegie Mellon University. Requirements: The student is required to research the specific area of technology they are working in. The research is then presented by means of written reports, demonstrations, posters, projects, or classroom presentations. Tests and quizzes are also a part of the evaluation process.

STEM 8 5 periods weekly for one nine weeks

Purpose: The STEM 8 course is designed to show the student different technological areas in communications using science, technology engineering and math. The course will introduce the student to a variety of ways people use technology to communicate. The course will give the student an overview of technological advancements. The student will experience various hands on activities which deal with modern communication technologies.Course Description: The course is a classroom/laboratory class that exposes the student to several areas of communications technology. Major units include computer aided drafting, rapid prototyping (3D printing), architectural design and construction. The customary system of measuring is used throughout the course.Requirements: The student will be required to produce various design projects using technology. Quizzes, tests, and work sheets are part of the evaluation as well as projects and class participation.

MUSIC 8 SemesterPurpose: Completion of this course should provide the student with a musical ability that will enable him/her to listen to and discuss various musical aspects in a knowledgeable manner.

Course Description: This course is designed with a two-fold purpose. The first is to actively involve students in the music creating process through the use of the Yamaha Music In Education keyboard lab. Students will have hands- on experiences with rhythmic, melodic, and expressionistic elements of music. Secondly, the students will receive a brief overview of American music. Four specific topics will be covered, Music of Other Countries, American Folk Music, Jazz, and American Composers.

Requirements: Students will be required to complete the following evaluative procedures: Written and aural quizzes, unit tests, listening analysis, classroom seatwork, creative writing assignments, performance, and classroom discussions. In addition, students may also be required to present written and oral reports on various musical topics.
