Course IntroductionO English for academic purpose is a course

focused on teaching of those oral and written communication skills in English which are required for study purposes in formal educational settings.

O This course is designed for freshman, keeping in mind their communication needs in their new academic setting, which demands better communication skills in English language as the only medium of instruction in university as instructed by Higher education commission of Pakistan.

This course aims at development of:1. new grammatical structures2. vocabulary for successful academic

Course Objectives By the end of this course students will be able to:

O read a variety of texts with better comprehension, by using various reading styles and strategies

O deliver oral presentations with more confidence, fluency and accuracy

O read for learning the correct use of grammatical structures and to acquire academic vocabulary

O Produce error free writing with diversified academic vocabulary and in formal academic writing tone

O write different, narrative, descriptive and persuasive texts to complete academic writing tasks in different formats i.e essays, reports, letters and research based assignments

O listen the lectures and seminars, with better comprehension and critical approach

O participate actively in class activities and discussions by using the target language

O can proofread their works for common language errors

Teaching and Learning Methodologies

Interactive classroom sessions: 

Interactive Learning is one of the best ways for students to grasp key concepts in the class room. Students will be involved in interactive situations. Teachers will endeavor to utilize technology to inculcate creativity and interest in students. Multi Media, YouTube footage, Movies and appropriate handouts, will be used to initiate discussions. All students have to do is to put some efforts in speaking and writing and to allocate proper timings to regular practices.

 Task based activities: 

Task based approach to language teaching will be employed in the lessons. Task based activities will be based around the completion of a communicative task relevant to their areas of study and the language studied will be determined by what happens as the students complete it.

Portfolio assessment is a multi-faceted process characterized by the following qualities:

1. It is continuous and ongoing, providing both formative (i.e., ongoing) and summative (i.e., culminating) opportunities for monitoring students' progress toward achieving essential outcomes.

2. It is multidimensional, i.e., reflecting a wide variety of artifacts and processes reflecting various aspects of students' learning process.

Honor Code and Classroom Etiquette

AttendanceFor the maximum learning of students, attendance is mandatory. Teacher will mark the attendance after 10 minutes of the class starting time and late comers will not be considered present after the teacher finished taking the roll call. Individual cases will be considered by the course instructor and must be supported by appropriate documentation.  Class ConductTo ensure an optimum learning environment, students are expected to behave in a professional manner at all times. Disrupting a class is considered to be an instructional offence, and it is expected that students will behave professionally. If a student exhibits disruptive behaviour in class and chooses not to refrain from such behaviour at the request of the instructor, the student will be asked to leave the class. The student’s behaviour will be reported to the concerned department and campus security.

Academic and Disciplinary Policies

Plagiarism:Work presented for assessment, whether as coursework or examination, must be your own. Plagiarism is the representation of another person’s work as your own. Strict action will be taken against students carrying out this act of dishonesty.Students Feedback and Quality Assurance:Students will have the opportunity to provide feedback about this course through their Board of Studies Representatives. They will be asked to complete a questionnaire about the module towards the end of the semester. Deadlines & Penalties:Students must meet all the deadlines of coursework. They will not be awarded any mark if they miss the deadlines which mean that the student has not completed all the assessment requirements for the module. The minimum passing grade D is the maximum that may be gained if the module is subsequently passed. Students cannot be given an extension on the coursework deadline (unless you have written approval of your teacher alongside other university authorities).Submission of Coursework:Coursework must be submitted to the Students’ office with the feedback / receipt form . Work should be stapled at the top left hand corner or plastic folders can be used. Students should retain a copy of their submitted work
