Each year since the early 1900s Christian churches and the Catholic Church all over the world have celebrated from January 18–25 the WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY. Over the last 100 years we have made great progress, and we still have a long way to go. But it is important to know that we are going forward. The theme this year is “Reconciliation—The Love of Christ Compels Us (2 Corinthians 5:14-20).” I spotlight verses 19-20: “I mean that God, in Christ, was reconciling the world to himself, not counting men’s transgressions against them, and that he has entrusted the message of reconciliation to us. This makes us ambassadors for Christ, God as it were appealing through us.” All of us disciples of Christ want to be reconciled to each other. For this, we pray, beginning on the 18th and going to the 25th, the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul.

And during this same time of year, we remember the very tragic decision of the justices of the Supreme Court when in January, 1973, they legalized abortion. And, of course, over 50 million babies have been killed since then. Over these 44 years we have made some progress in restricting abortion, but much more progress needs to be made. Our diocesan pro-life ministry had a series of events this weekend that will encourage us to work together. Here at St. Francis, this weekend a designated family at each Mass will place a white rose on the altar as we pray for the little ones who have been killed.

Please note that the regular Mass in Spanish on Friday, January 20, will be cancelled since our Faith Formation children who are making their First Reconciliation in Spanish will be doing so next Friday in the Church.

Fr. Paul will be returning from vacation on Wednesday the 18th.

Cada año, desde principios del siglo XX las iglesias cristianas y la Iglesia Católica de todo el mundo han celebrado del 18 al 25 de enero la SEMANA DE ORACIÓN PARA LA UNIDAD CRISTIANA. En los últimos 100 años hemos hecho grandes progresos, y todavía tenemos un largo camino por recorrer, pero es importante saber que estamos avanzando. El tema de este año es "Reconciliación: El amor de Cristo nos apremia (2 Corintios 5: 14-20)”. Destaco los versículos 19-20: "Pues en Cristo Dios estaba reconciliando el mundo con él; ya no tomaba en cuenta los pecados de los hombres, sino que a nosotros nos entregaba el mensaje de la reconciliación. Nos presentamos, pues, como embajadores de Cristo, como si Dios mismo les exhortara por nuestra boca." Todos nosotros, discípulos de Cristo, queremos reconciliarnos unos con otros. Para ello, oramos a partir del día 18 y hasta el día 25 cuando celebramos la Fiesta de la Conversión de San Pablo.

Y durante esta misma época del año, recordamos la trágica decisión de los jueces de la Corte Suprema cuando en enero de 1973, legalizaron el aborto. Y, por supuesto, más de 50 millones de bebés han muerto desde entonces. A lo largo de estos 44 años hemos logrado algunos avances en la restricción del aborto, pero se necesita trabajar más. Nuestro ministerio diocesano Próvida tuvo una serie de eventos donde nos invitaron a trabajar juntos. Aquí en San Francisco, este fin de semana una familia designada en cada Misa colocará una rosa blanca en el altar mientras oramos por los pequeños que han sido asesinados.

Tenga en cuenta que la Misa regular en español el viernes 20 de enero será cancelada ya que nuestros niños de Formación de Fe que se están preparando para hacer su Primera Reconciliación en español lo harán el próximo viernes en la Iglesia.

El Padre Paul regresará de sus vacaciones el miércoles 18 de enero.

Knights of Columbus 12480 and Columbian Squires 5450 Free Throw Championship January 22nd after 8:00 am , 9:45 am 11:30 am MassesAll boys and girls ages 9 to 14 from St. Francis are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2017 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. This local competition will be held on January 22nd following the 8:00 am, 9:45 am and 11:30 am Masses in the Great Hall. The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, and state competitions. International champions are announced by the kofc international headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions. All boys and girls 9 to 14 years old are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions. All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the event. Participants are required to furnish proof of age.
