EssaySketching has its vital role in a process of design. Sketching is defined as

a process of a brief, rough and basic drawing to present the end product of an

object or an idea. There are many occupations such as artists, architects,

draftsman, etc. typically need sketching to elaborate their ideas and

communicate with their clients and participants who involved in a process of a

creation. As a future architect, sketching helps to get my ideas down on papers

and let other people know what we are going to draw or design before going into

more details. In addition, sketching allow lecturers to see absolutely what I had in

my mind, thus I won’t waste lot of time to explain to the lecturers. The process

essay of this article is about the process of sketching a frying pan.

I had chosen a frying pan as a kitchen utensil. This was because I had a

frying pan in my kitchen since I moved in to my new room. On the other hand,

frying pan was portable and not as heavy as a refrigerator or an oven. Frying pan

was a flat-bottom pan made of aluminium with a diameter of 24 cm. It had long

Bakelite handle which was an insulator of heat, therefore the heat won’t transmit

to the handle and burn our hands. Besides that, the handle was designed with a

small hole which was enabled to hang it on the wall hanger in the kitchen. The

colour of bolster was lighter than the colour of body for frying pan and the handle.

The bottom of the frying pan has a label of a zebra and two phrases which were

“Forged Bottom Technology” and “Strongly Keep Bottom in Shape”. The frying

pan had a smooth surface and the low sides of the frying pan were flared

outwards. The frying pan produced a “gong” sound while the handle produced a

“ting” when knocked. Basically, frying pan is used for frying, browning, searing

and also reheat food.

Pencils which I chose to use for shading a frying pan were H, 2B, 5B and

8B pencils. H pencil was used for sketching the shape of the frying pan while 2B,

5B and 8B pencils were used for shading. I used 2B and 5B pencils to shade for

the lighter part while 8B pencil was used to shade for the darker part. Apart from

that, I also used ruler and eraser during my sketching. I prefer to use a better

quality of eraser, otherwise your sketching will totally ruined because of a low

quality of eraser. Since I am using an A4 paper which is quite small, therefore I

just need clear part of my workspace before I started my sketching.

At first, I used H pencil to sketch a frying pan with a few light lines with a

loose hand. Then, I used a ruler to draw a rectangle so I could fix the shape of an

oval. The oval shape was drawn for the top of the frying pan and a semi circle

was drawn for the bottom of the frying pan. After that, I drew the part of the

handle and bolster. I used 2B pencil to draw the outline of the frying pan and 5B

and 8B for shading. There were a lot of mistakes during my sketching especially

drawing the body of the frying pan. I kept correcting my mistakes and made

modification so as to make it prefect.

The whole process of my sketching was took me an hour as it was hard to

achieve a perfect shape for frying pan and shading. I was happy after I had

finished my sketching of a frying pan. Besides that, I was tired because I started

my sketching in the midnight. I was satisfied with my work although it wasn’t

100% perfect compare with my friends. If there is a chance to sketch a kitchen

utensil again, I will try other than a frying pan such as box grater, potato masher

or vegetable peeler. Throughout this process, I know that sketching is not difficult

at all.
