Review Paragraph Writing

A paragraph is a group of sentences focused on one main idea.

Every paragraph needs a Topic Sentence.

All other sentences support the Topic Sentence.

Paragraphs end with a Concluding Sentence.

Developing Unified Paragraphs

A paragraph is unified when every sentence develops the point made in the topic sentence.

It must have a single focus and it must contain no irrelevant facts.


Every sentence must contribute to the paragraph by explaining, exemplifying, or expanding the topic sentence.


In order to determine whether a paragraph is well developed ask yourself: "What main point am I trying to convey here?" (topic sentence) and then "Does every sentence clearly relate to this idea?"


There are several ways you can build good, clear paragraphs:

1. Paragraph Development by Detail

~most common and easiest form of development: simply expand on a general topic sentence using specific examples or illustrations.

Development by Detail Computers are a link to the entire world. People can connect to others in foreign countries. Students can attend schools via the internet. Anyone can access information using a computer. They have become our gateway to the world.

Concluding Sentence- They have become our gateway to the world.

Development by Comparison and Contrast

You should consider developing your paragraph by comparison and contrast when you are describing two or more things which have something, but not everything, in common.

Compare and Contrast

Essays and paragraphs are similar in their development but different in other ways. Both use an introduction, body, and conclusion to make their points. Both attempt to develop a main idea. An essay is longer though


and goes into more detail. While their structure is the same, the essay and the paragraph do differ.

Paragraph Development by Process

Paragraph development by process involves a straightforward step-by-step description.

Process To make a sandwich requires the proper ingredients. First lay out your bread, mayonnaise, turkey, and cheese. Next, spread the mayo on your bread. Then place one piece of cheese on the bread. Next place 2-3 slices of turkey on the cheese. Top with the remaining bread and slice diagonally. Finally, enjoy!

Paragraph Development by Combination

Very often, a single paragraph will contain development by a combination of methods.


It may begin with a brief comparison, and move on to provide detailed descriptions of the subjects being compared.


A process analysis might include a brief history of the process in question. Many paragraphs include lists of examples.

Combination The characteristics used to define males could be used to define females too, but they are not. Webster's Dictionary provides a list of "qualities considered distinctive of womanhood": "Gentleness, affection, and domesticity or fickleness, superficiality, and folly.“ Among the "qualities

Combination considered distinctive of manhood" listed in the entry for man, no negative attributes detract from the "courage, strength, and vigor" the definers associate with males. According to this dictionary, womanish means "unsuitable to a man or to a strong character of either sex."

This paragraph is a good example of one which combines a comparison and contrast of contemporary notions of "manliness" and "womanliness" with an extended list of examples.

Take one of your Topic Sentences you wrote from the last lesson, and develop a unified paragraph using one of these processes OR a combination of them.

Cast of Characters:

•Narrator•Servant•Nebuchadnezzar•Daniel

Narrator: There was a descendent of Abraham named Daniel. He was one of a large group of Jews that was moved from their homes in Jerusalem and taken far away to the kingdom of Babylon.

Servant: Oh, great King Nebuchadnezzar, why do you look so sad?

Nebuchadnezzar: I am greatly troubled. I have been having terrible dreams that worry me.

Servant: Why don’t I send for all your wise men and astrologers?

Narrator: So the king’s official went out to find all the wise men. Daniel and his friends were considered part of this group.

Daniel: Why has the king ordered such a harsh decree?

Narrator: So Daniel went back to his friends and he asked them to pray and ask the God of Heaven to reveal the mystery of the dream, and they prayed HARD! During the night, God revealed the mystery to Daniel in a vision. In the morning Daniel said…

Daniel: I thank and praise you, O God of my fathers: Let us go tell the King what God has revealed! [walks across the stage to where the king sits, bows to the king]
