JUE 200/2 – ENGLISH I
LECTURER: DR. PUVANESWARY MURUGAIAH
INTRODUCTION
JUE 200 is an intermediate level English proficiency course offered by the School of
Distance Education (PPPJJ). It is meant for students who have passed JUE 100 English
course and those who have secured a band 4 score in MUET.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
This course is a continuation of JUE 100. It is designed to improve your proficiency in
the four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) as well as your
grammar and vocabulary at the intermediate level. It is hoped that this course would
encourage you to use the language more frequently and effectively in your daily
activities.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course, you must be able to:
1. use grammar structures accurately and demonstrate a good range of vocabulary
2. speak and express yourself clearly in English in a group
3. read and comprehend a variety of texts
4. listen for information in various types of oral texts effectively
5. write short essays in the English language
6. express your views clearly in the written form
COURSE CONTENT
The course content comprises the four language skills –reading, writing, speaking and
listening as well as grammar. These will be reinforced and enhanced during the four (4)
video conference sessions – two before the Intensive course and two after the Intensive
course. The video conference sessions will be based on the mini-lectures (e-kuliah).
Please go through the lectures before attending the video conferencing sessions.

COURSE MATERIALS
The main source of content for this course is the mini lecture series that will be uploaded
in the portal.

Supplementary notes and exercises on grammar and the four skills will also be posted on
the e-learning portal of PPPJJ. You are encouraged to try exercises on English that can be
downloaded from the Internet or found in various textbooks that are available. Read
English texts and practise using the language as much as you can. As the saying goes,
“Practice Makes Perfect”.

Assignment (20%) – Short Essay
Write a short essay of 250-300 words on ONE of the following topics.
How has studying at PPPJJ affected your life? Discuss.
OR Suggest some ways PPPJJ can help you improve in your studies.
General rules and guidelines
1. This is an individual assignment and not group work.
2. In writing an expository essay, make sure it consists of three main elements:
introduction, content and conclusion. The introductory paragraph should
introduce the topic. There must be two or three content paragraphs. Each content
paragraph can highlight a point. In the concluding paragraph, you may summarize

your points, give an overall view of the topic etc.. Please refer to notes in this
planner.
3. All essays must be typed in 12 point Times New Roman font and must be
double-spaced.
4. Use the cover page that will be posted on the e-learning portal for your
assignment.
5. Warning: NO marks will be awarded for copying from others or from the
Internet! No marks will be awarded for identical essays.
6. Late submission WILL NOT be entertained. Some of your seniors obtained no
marks for their assignments due to late submission. So please submit before the
final date.

Make sure you keep any proof of submission of your assignment. If you are posting it, keep the ‘pos express’ tab or registration receipt etc. If you are delivering it personally at the PPPJJ general office, please get a copy of your assignment stamped by the attending clerk at the counter.
Oral (20%)
The oral test will be conducted during the Intensive Course. Students from the Penang
regional centre will sit for it before the Intensive course (date, time and place of the test
will be notified in the portal). You will be tested in a group for 15 minutes. In each group,
there will be 5-6 students. You have to be at the centre at least 15 minutes before the test.
For example, if your test time slot is 9.00 – 9.15 a.m., you have to be at the centre by 8.45
a.m.. For the test, a group will be given a picture. You are required to talk about the
picture –describe it or share your experience related to the theme of the picture or

describe what the picture reminds you of etc.. The picture will be given 15 minutes
before the test for you do some preparation. Think of the points you can speak on as well
as the relevant vocabulary/words. Use the preparation time fully. No written notes are
allowed during the test.
For example, you are given this picture. What can you say about it?
More details of the test will be posted on the e-portal.
Continuous Assessment (Peperiksaan Berterusan) – 20%
This test will be conducted during the intensive course which will be held from 19
January – 7 February 2016. The components of the test are Listening Comprehension,
Writing and Grammar. The first section is on listening comprehension. You will listen to
two passages. Questions will be posed after each passage. The second section is on
writing and grammar. You will be tested on writing and the use of grammar based on the
mini-lecture series.

Final Examination (40%)
The components in the final examination are reading comprehension and also the
linguistic forms and functions that you have learnt.
E-LEARNING PORTAL
The e-learning portal will be used widely for this course. I will post numerous
supplementary exercises, passages and other information in the portal. News and updates
will also be posted. We can communicate with one another and practise the English
language by writing in the forum or blogs made available in the portal.
