It is a great honour to be asked to captain a team for one’s country and I am indebted to the EnglishTwentyCouncilwhohaveaffordedmetheopportunity.

ThelateAndrewTucker,apreviousPresidentoftheEnglishTwentyClub,selectedmeformyfirstseniortourin1995whenhetookthefirstEnglandtouringteamtoCanada.Atthetimeofapplication,IhadtofillinaformwhichincludedaquestionaboutwhatIcouldoffertheteamasidefrommyshooting;theresponseof“myyouth”(Iwasamere21then)mayhavebeenslightlycheekybutImadethecutandwasveryproudtowearthethreelionsonmyblazer.ThisplayedheavilyinmymindwhenselectingmyteamandsothereareagoodnumberofyoungstersandfirstcapsinourteamtoSouthAfrica.

IhavevisitedSouthAfricatoshootbothasanindividualaswellasonEnglandandGBteamsandwhilstthecompetition isalwaysexceedinglystrong, inparticular forthe Internationalmatches,thewelcomewereceivefromthe“shottists”isevenmorememorable.Overtheyearswehaveforgedgreatfriendshipsandwelookforwardtorenewingandstrengtheningthem.

ThisyearwewillhavetheopportunitytoshootanAmericaMatchinadditiontotheInter-nationalProteaMatchandwithastrongUSAteamalsovisitingweexpectittobeaverycompetitivetwoweeks.Iamhoweverfortunatetohavemanagedtopersuadesomeexperi-encedhandstojointheyouthoftheteamandwehopetorisetothechallenge.

Iwouldliketoexpressmythankstothenumerouspeopleandorganisationsthathavehelpedorganisethistour;theyarementionedelsewherewithinthisbrochure.MyVice-Cap-tain,JamesLewisandAdjutantEmmaCanningshavehelpedkeepmeonthestraightandnarrowanddoneworkbehindthescenestomakethistourhappenofwhichIamgrateful.

WithsixprevioustripstoSouthAfricaandfourEng-landtoursunderhisbelt,thisishisfirstasCaptainof a senior team.

James learnt to shoot at Uppingham School guided bySimonPattinsonwhowasresponsibleforfourofthisteam’sinterestinshooting.Hehassincewonhis“bigfive”matchesbadgeincludingtwosuccess-ful Palma Matches.

Recentlymarried,hehasmanagedtocomeawayontournotleastbecausehiswifewillbeawayher-selfatthattimeworkinginWestAfricawhilstJamesis in Bloemfontein.

Inordertofundthesetrips,JamesworksforSAPasanaccountmanagersellingbusinesssoftwaretocustomers in the Financial Services and Telco and Manufacturing industries.

ThisisJames'firstoverseasEnglandtour,buthis7thtriptoSouthAfrica,twicewithaGBteam.Jumbo,asheismorefrequentlyknown,wasthewinneroftheQueensprizein2007,heclaimsthewinningcocktailwasamartiniandacleanshirtpriortothestartofthefinal.Healsowonanindi-vidual gold medal in Brisbane in 2011, much to the surprise of his Palma team mates.

JumbohasrecentlymovedtoKentwithhisyoungfamily and runs an investment company in the city.

GlynhasnottouredoverseaswitheitheranEng-land or GB team since 1999 and is therefore look-ingforwardtodiscoveringhowit’sdoneinthe21stcentury.

HehashoweverrepresentedEnglandandGBbeforeandafter1999andtallies2Queensprizes,2BisleyGrandAggGolds,3Silvers,CommonwealthGamesGold, Silver and 2 Bronze medals, 3 Palma Team Gold,1silverandthe“Big5”fourtimesover.Hehasretiredfromliving(andshooting)intherainandsnowsince2009andnowlivesinAbuDhabi,UAEworkingasanEmergencyMedicineConsultantin the region’s busiest hospital. This has meant that theImperialmeetingisnowanannualpilgrimageeverysummerandheownsnowarmclothes.

Heisthoroughlylookingforwardtotheopportunitytotouragain,thoughnowrealizesheisoneofthose“olderones”onthetournowandexpectstolearnhowit’snowdoneandwillpickitupashegoesalong.

ChrisBelkfirstheldaspirationstobeamarksmanwhenhesinglehandedlyshotdownaGermanair-planewithabowandarrowattheageof3.

SincethenshootingatUppinghamSchoolhonedthose precocious skills and in 1958, as Captain elect ofCambridgerifleteam,herepresentedGreatBritainandwontheCanadianGovernorGeneralsPrize. Arguably he is one of the youngest, if not the youngest, to have done this.

AnotheruniquerecordChrisholdsishavingmadetheQueensfinalineachofthelastsevendecades!

HavingbegunhershootingcareeratUppinghamSchoolundertheabletutelageofSimonPattin-son,EmmawasselectedtotourCanadawiththeAthelingsin1997andsubsequentlyshotwhilstatReadingUniversity.Therefollowedahiatusinhershootingfrom2002to2007asshepursuedaca-reerintheArmy(attractedbytheambiguous,butveryreal,promiseofsunandsand)wheresheroseto the rank of Captain before rejoining civvy street whereshenowworksasasolutionsmanagerforCapita PLC.

ShootinghasofferedEmmamanyhighpoints,butfirstandforemostsheliststheenjoymentshehasgained simply from returning to the sport and to Bisley.ShewasveryproudtobeCommandantofthe 2008 GB Under 19 Team to South Africa for a highlysuccessfultourandhopesthatherfirstEng-landTourwillproveastriumphant.Despitebeing

suchashyandretiringcreature,EmmaisawellknownfigurearoundtheCommon,andislookingforwardtomakingsomenewfriendsandcatchingupwitholdonesonthistour,alongwithrisingtotheuniquechallengeswhichSouthAfricahastooffer.

Alastairhasbeenshootingsincetheageofsixandwasgivenhisfirstfull-borerifleforChristmasatagedeight,whichhestillhas,althoughhehasratheroutgrownit.HewenttoGresham’sfrom1989-91andwhilsttheretouredtoCanadatwice-withWandsworthFBRCin1990andtheAthelingsin1991,pickinguptwoGovernorGeneralsfinalsbadges,oneLt.Governor’sfinalbadgeandwinningtheFamiliesCompetition.SincethenhehastouredtotheChan-nelIslandsin2002withtheNRAteamandtoSouthAfricain2009withtheOldGuildfordians,althoughheneveractuallyattendedthatschoolbutisan‘O.G.’ontwoothercounts.MorerecentlyheshotforEnglandintheEuropeanLongRangeChampionshipslastyearandisareservefortheGBrifleteamtoCanadalater

thisyear.HeisalsoafoundingmemberofHogleasHallRifleClubwhichwontheOpeningShotcompeti-tionduringlastImperialMeeting,althoughnobodyhasactuallyseenthispotsinceprize-giving.OutsideofshootingAlastairiscurrentlyenjoyingtemporaryretirement,havingdrawnalineunderhis15yearinvestmentbankingcareerintimeforhisdaughterAudrey’sbirthlastOctober.Forthepast18monthshehasalsobeenactivelymanagingamammothhouserenovationprojectinWimbledon,intowhichhehopestomovehislovelywifeSheilaandlittleAudreybeforehejetsofftoSouthAfricainApril.

SamisreallyexcitedabouttakingpartinhisfirsttourwiththeEnglandTeam.ThiswillbehisthirdtriptoSouthAfricaandhissecondSAOpenChampionships.ThelasttimehewasinSouthAfricawas10yearsagowiththeGBU19in2003andheislookingforwardtore-kindlingoldfriendshipsandmakingnewones.SamstartedshootingatSevenoaksSchoolandcontin-ued at Imperial College and the University of London. SamhasshotoverseasinCanadawiththeAthelings(2002)andintheChannelIsleswiththeUKCadets(2001) and the NRA Team (2012). He is looking for-wardtojoininghisNRATourteammates–Emma,EllieandEllie–inSouthAfrica.SamnowlivesinLondonandworksforErnst&YounginCorporateFinance.OutsideofworkandshootingheistryingtolearnMandarinandenjoysfilms,cook-ing,travellingandskiing.Aftercompletingthetourhe

willgoontovisithisSister,Izzy,inDurban,wheresheisspendingayearworkingasageneralSurgeon.

ThiswillbeAndy'sfirsttriptoSouthAfrica,howeverhisthirdoverseastour,havingpreviouslyconqueredThe Channel Islands and North America.Inrecentyears,Andy,48,GSOH,hasrepresentedGBoverseasintheCommonwealthMatchandonhometurf,representedEnglandinboththeMackinnonandNationalMatches.Individually,Andyhasalsowonafew'pots'overtheyears,mostnotablywinningtheCorporation,follow-ingthesageadviceofhisthenshootingmaster,utilis-ingthewinningcombinationofalcoholandshootingfast!AsignificantdrawtoSouthAfricaforAndywillbetheabilitytoconsumecopiousamountsoffinesteak.Athome,AndyfundshisshootingbyworkinginthePharmaceuticalIndustryasanITconsultant.Whilstontour,hewillbeleavinghispartner,12yearoldson,3dogs,2cats,2deguandasmallshoaloffishathome...Donnaisclearlygoingtohaveherhandsfull!Inaformerlife,Andyusedtobeahelicopterpilot.Thesedays,inordertofundhisshootinghabit,hehasdownsizedtotheremotecontrolvariety.Heishopingtobringoneontour,attachingacameraandgettingsome'SkySports-esque'actionshotsoftheProteaandAmericamatches.

Havingtakenaroundfifteenyearsoffhisshooting,duringwhichtimeheconcentratedavidlyonstagework,radioworkandsettinguphisownbuildingcompany,Domreturnedtoshootingsixyearsagoin 2007. He has not toured since being a sprightly member of the Athelings, but intends to break back intothetouringsceneinSouthAfricawithaliteralbang.Hisprizelistsuccesseswillnodoubtbebuiltupon,muchlikeinhisprofessionallife,whereDomis a property developer.

Howhehasjuggledthiswithalreadyhavinghurtledatbulletspeeddownskislopesthreetimesthissea-sonalone,wewillneverknow,thoughSouthAfricawillprovequitethetemperaturechange!SouthAf-rica also presents a compelling opportunity for Dom toinvestigatehispenchantforfinewines.Hereallyis raring to go for both our tour and his Great Britain tourparticipationtoCanadalaterthisyear.

TomDrysdaleisnostrangertorepresentinghiscountry having toured to Australia, Canada and SouthAfricawiththeGBUnder19andUnder25teams.

AttheWorldLongRangeRifleChampionshipsnotonlywashepartofthesuccessfulGBU25teambutalsocameawaywithanindividualmedal.

AsafinancialanalystworkinginLondon,hewillbescrutinisingToby'squestionableaccountancyskills.Besideshooting,Tomsfillshistimestudyingto-wardshisCIMAqualificationandenjoysFootball,runningandactivitieswiththeAirTrainingCorps.

Having toured to South Africa in 2007, Tom is look-ingforwardtore-acquaintinghimselfwiththebighunksofmeat(steaks)hefeastedonlasttime.

'Hurricane'ElliefirsttookupshootingwithGlaston-bury ACF in 2000.

An instant convert to full bore culminated in her se-lectionasareservefortheAthelingsin2004.Takinga6yearbreakfromcompetitiveshootingtoqualifyas a Chartered accountant, she returned in 2010 and subsequentlytouredtheCIwiththeNRAteam,lead-ing to her inclusion in this team.

Sheislookingforwardtoalonger-distancetourwithmany experienced shooters.

Awayfromworkandshooting,skiingandwhiskyarepassions.

BeginningshootingatSevenoaksSchoolattheten-derageof13,thisfirstinternationaloutingforEllierepresentinghercountryisanexcitingopportunitytobuilduponhersuccessestouringwiththeNRAteams.Awholenewcollectionofcompetitionstowininanewcountryisacompellingdraw.

Thesouthernhemispherewilltakeherawayfromshepherdingne’er-do-wellsinSouthamptonasaparttimepoliceofficerwhilecompletingherdegreeinoceanography.Elliewouldliketotraintobeafire-armsofficerinthefuture.

Thoughalittlerusty,Ellieisaqualifiedsologliderpi-lot.Let’shopeflyinghighwithminimaleffortcomeseasily on the Bloemfontein ranges.

As one of the more senior members of the team it wasasurprisetofindoutthatateam-matehadshotforSurreybeforePaulwasborn!AwayfromtherangesPaulmanagesacommercialandresidentialpropertyportfolioincentralLondon.He is married to Sarah (shot in successful 1995 Palma inNewZealandwhilstPaulcoachedoneoftheothertargets)andtheyhavetwodaughtersEmilyandLucywhoenjoyshopping!PaulhastouredseveraltimeswithGreatBritainbutthisishisfirsttriptoBloemfonteinandhisfirsttourwithEnglandandheislookingforwardtoshootingontheVeldtandrenewingoldfriendshipswithSouthAfricans that he has met on previously. AlthoughPaulhaswonmostofthecompetitionsatBisleyonmorethanoneoccasiontheQueensPrizeremainselusivetodate.Heholdsanumberofrecordsincluding:29QueensFinalsand22Kolapore appearances (including the highest individual score in the match 150.29 in 2012 ). 28 St GeorgesFinals,25GrandAggcrosses,84‘Big5’appearanceswith26Mackinnonand22NationalsforEnglandandheisoneofonlythreepeoplewhohaveshotandcoachedthe‘Big5’.

Parag is a consultant surgeon at St. George's Hospi-tal,London,whenhehastimeofffromannual(ormorefrequent)rifletours.Nodoubthispatientsappreciatesomuchaccuracypractice.Hislong-suf-feringwifeUrviandkidsAaronandZacharyaretherealheroesoftheEnglandteam.ParagstartedshootingatEpsomCollegein1989andwassoonintoforminthreewinningAshburtonteams. Since then he has toured at least annually andhascollectedCommonwealthGamesindividualgoldandsilver,pluspairsgoldandbronzewithGlynBarnettandJonUnderwoodrespectively(bothalsoonthisteam).AswinneroftwograndaggregatesatBisley and one in Canada his scalpel is out to carve his name at Bloemfontein again. A regular member ofGBandEnglandteamsathomeandabroad,hecontrives to be a consummate professional in sport andsurgerywithoutevenbeingboring–evenhishandwritingisalmostlegible.

Mattisoneoftheyoungermembersoftheteam,having been born in the same year that Dom de Vere lasttouredoverseas.Matthasbeenshootingsince2005,havingstartedwhileatGresham'sschool-heisoneofthreeOldGreshamian'sonthistour.Heprogressedquickly,winningtheWimbledonT.R.Competitionfiveyearslaterin2010.Hefollowsinalongfamilytraditionandisoneoffour'Purdy's'tohave been through Greshams over the past several decades - all four of them having also been Athelings. Duringhisshootingcareer,Matthasachievedplacesonanumberofoverseasteams.AftertheAthelingsin2010,hewenttoSouthAfricain2011ontheGBU19team(whichhecaptained),andachievedhisfullGBcoloursontheteamtoUSAandCanadain2012.MattachievedhisfirstfullEnglandcapintheEuropean

LongRangeChampionshipinOctober2012,whichEnglandwon.MattisatLancasterUniversitystudyingmechanicalengineeringandisamemberoftheuniversityOTC.Afterhegraduates,MattplanstoembarkonofficertrainingatSandhurstandjointheBritishArmy.

Toby has represented his country on a number of occasions.AproductofEpsomCollegeshooting(alongwiththreeothersonthistour)andhavingbeenpartofawinningAshburtonTeamonthreeoccasions,hefirstvisitedCanadawiththeAthelingsin1993,returningthere2yearslaterwithEngland.Unfortunately,hischosenpathofMechanicalEn-gineeringatNottinghamUniversityandCharteredAccountancyclashedforawhilewithcompetitiveshooting(beerhadnothingtowithit,honest),soitwasnotuntil2002thathereturnedtofull-timeshooting,winningtheBritishCommonwealthRifleClubmeetingonhisfirstcompetitiveouting.HethenembarkedonaseriesofsuccessfultourswithGBtoAmerica,Canada(manytimes),SouthAf-ricaandAustralia,includingtwovictoriousPalmamatches.HehasalsoparticipatedinmanyMack-innon,NationalandKolaporeMatches,although,sadly,thebig5(AustraliaMatch)stilleludes.

Kelvin’searlyshootingcareerstartedatEpsomCollegewherehewonthreeAsburtonwinnersmedals (he is one of three members of this team tohavesuchaclaim!).AfterCaptainingCambridgeUniversityandbeingawardedaBlue,hewasfortu-nate enough to represent his country on a number of occasions including tours to Australia, America, CanadaandtheWestIndies.Mostrecently,hewaspart of the victorious Great Britain team to North Americain2012andwasamemberoftheVIIIwhosettheworldrecordscoreof1200ex1200.Hehas,however,nevertouredtoSouthAfricaandis delighted to have been given the opportunity to doso,especiallywithsuchanauspiciousteam.Asoneofthethreemedicalofficersontheteam,KelvinisareconstructiveplasticsurgeonworkinginLondon. These skills may be called upon to improve someofthemoreaestheticallychallengedofhistouring colleagues.

AntstartedshootingatUppingham,whichenabledhim to shoot alongside playing hockey and Cricket. InhisearlytwentiesAntspent2½yearsinAustraliaworkingandshootingateveryrangeinthecountry.Anthascompetedatmostrangesintheworld,butstillhasyettoshootintheFalklandIslands,some-thingwhichhehopestodointhefuture.AnthasanimpressiveshootingCVincludingwin-ningtheQueen’sprizethreetimes,theGovernorGeneral’sprizeonceandtheWorldChampstwotimesintheUSandNewZealand.Hehasrepre-sentedGBontoomanyoccasionstomentionandhasalsorepresentedEnglandintheCommon-wealthGames.ThiswillbehisfirstfullEnglandtourandhis4thtourtoSouthAfrica,hisfirstbeingagoodwilltourin1992.BackinNorfolk,whereAntworksathispetcre-

matoriumbusiness,heiscurrentlytrainingfortheNorfolksuperherochallenge–whichconsistsofa1mileswim,4mile2mankayak,45milecyclefinishedwitha8milerun.AntismarriedtoVickiandinhisremainingsparetimeheenjoyswatchinghisdaughterRosieridePoniesandhissonTomplayrugby.

Born and raised in Salford, Manchester and recently movedtoWandsworth,BruceisanArchitecturaltechnologistandlightingconsultantinLondon.

Hehasbeenshootingfor18years;it’skindofafamilything.FirstshootingforGBunder25’sinAus-tralia2005,hefollowedthiswiththeNRAchannelIslandstour2011andhasshotforEnglandintheNationalbefore.

He is an aspiring professional footballer, golfer and snowboarderandisunrealisticallyambitiousandoptimistic.

The Protea Match TheProteaMatchisateamoftwelveshooters,three sub-coaches, a main coach, an adjutant, a captainandthreereserves.Eachshooterfires2ssighters and 10 to count at each of 300m, 600m and 900m.

The match is shot annually in South Africa at theirNationalChampionshipsbetweenSouthAfricaandanytouringinternationalteams.

South Africa have a strong record in the match losingononlytwooccassionstoGreatBritainin1999 and 2008.

The General de Wet RangeThe General de Wet range is located 15 to 20 miles from the centre of Bloemfontein where the team will be staying. It is a very open range in an area of “high Veldt” which offers shooters a very fair range as there in no shelter from trees or landscape that are often the case.

Members of the team have experienced both very dry conditions (when dust becomes a major factor and shooters can even experience dust storms) as well as the opposite endof the spectrum and it is not unknown for shooting to be cancelled for the day due to heavy rain.

Having spent both its training weekends at Bisley in January and March in snow and heavy rain, the team is very much hoping that the weather will be more in the range of the 20-30 degrees with sun to warm us after the coldest March on record in the UK.

The range is located at altitude (some 4,500 feet above sea level) and with the thinner air, it is often sub-ject to very sudden and fickle wind changes. A definite advantage for the faster shooters in the team.

The America Match The America Match is for a team of eight shooters, twosub-coaches,amaincoach,anadjutant,acaptainandtworeserves.Eachfirershoots2sightersand15shots to count at four distances. At Bloemfontein this year,theywillbe300,600,800and900metres.

Firstshotin2002,thematchcanonlytakeplacewhenanofficialUSteamispresentandcompeting.Thematchisheldeverytwoyears,withthevenuealter-natingbetweentheUSAandCanada.

ThereisaprovisionforthematchtobeshotbetweentheregularmatchesatanylocationgiventheUSAandCanadian approval and in 2013 this has been granted toSouthAfrica.In2015,thenextPalmayear,itwillalso be shot in Camp Perry.

Thetrophy(pictured)waspresentedin2002,havingbeenmadepossiblebyaPrecisionShootingMagazinefund-raisingeffort.Thetwofiguresdepictedinthesculpture,madebyGeorgeChaseofNewBrunswick,are Jim Thompson of Canada – an immigrant from Britain-andAlanWarner(standing)oftheUSA.

InthefirstmatchheldatConnaughtrangesin2002,USA,Canada,GreatBritainandGermanycompeted.GreatBritainwonfromCanadaby48pointswiththeUSAafurther9pointsbehindthem.JohnPugsleywastopscorerwith298.30.Sincethen,ithasbeenheldonafurtherfiveoccasionswithGBwinninginCanadawhilsttheUSAhaveconqueroredinAmerica.

Therecordscoreis2392.317byGreatBritainin2006,withthreefirersscoring300s.Thehighestindividualscoreintheseriesis300.46byDesVamplew(Canada)in2010.NoawayteamhaswonthematchonUSsoil.
