country, and this year, most significantly, beating

Chelsea 2:0 and Fulham 5:2.

Programme Manager, Paul Topping, said “To

of David Beckham and Wayne Rooney and to

fantastic opportunity for Harrison and I am sure

he will enjoy every moment.” Open Evenings 2014

Tuesday 13 May, 4 – 7.30pm Wednesday 23 July, 4 – 7.30pm

Harrison Manning

Level 3 Football Development student Harrison Manning (17) from Wootton has been selected to represent England in this year’s Dallas Cup to be held in Dallas, USA in April. Widely regarded as the world‟s best youth football tournament and in order to ensure the highest level of competition the Dallas Cup is an invitation only tournament. Over 900 international players participate in the tournament each year. On average the Dallas Cup entertains over 100,000 spectators during the tournament week and the tournament contributes $12.6m to the Dallas economy.

Throughout Dallas Cup‟s history, many players

have gone on to great notoriety as professional

players and World Cup participants. A few of the

stars that have gone to play in the world‟s biggest

stage include David Beckham and Wayne Rooney.

In fact, Dallas Cup alumni have gone on to play in

over 350 World Cup games!

Three Isle of Wight College students were put

forward for trials and got through to the second

trials. Harrison was selected as one of the 20

young players to represent England.

The Isle of Wight College has been awarded the prestigious whole-college re-accreditation for the matrix Standard. The matrix Standard is the unique quality framework for the effective delivery of impartial information, advice and guidance (IAG) about learning and work. Although many colleges have partial matrix accreditation not all have been successful in obtaining accreditation for the whole college; and many have no IAG accreditation at all. At The Isle of Wight College this means the quality of the service extends to the main campus and outreach centres and with the service meeting the needs of school students, adults and businesses alike. The College has continued its development of a broad range of support services to learners and IAG is now fully embedded across the College. Not only does the college have its own Careers Adviser (Catherine Jackson, formerly with Connexions) but also a team trained in information, advice and guidance skills and mandated to offer impartial guidance to all learners. The matrix Standard has given the whole college a focus for IAG and their role within it and how to continue to improve the support for clients. During the Accreditation Review, which involved assessment over 3 days, and interviews with learners, employers and partners, many areas of good practice were identified including: “Resources at the College are exceptional and they offer learners environments where they are well-cared for, safe and have access to eminently suitable facilities and equipment to aid their learning. From the superb Sixth Form building, the Learning Resources Centre, teaching areas and

through to the vocational skills areas, learners have the ultimate provision and support to meet their educational ambitions.” “Innovation and application of technology has been taken to a new level at the College, whereby internal expertise has embraced emerging trends and developed realistic usage that informs and enhances the daily lives of its learners.” “The ICT resources at the College are at least equal to, and in most cases, beyond those of other further education institutes.” “Learners were genuinely in awe of the quality and speed of information resources available to them.” It was commented within the report that all learners interviewed were unanimous in their appreciation of the advice and continuing support they received over time and the dedication of the staff and commented: “It‟s a very safe place here and there is always someone to help you if you need it” “You‟re allowed to be independent; they treat you like adults; which is a totally new thing for me” “I‟m doing management Level 3, but already they have said I could go on to a HND or go to university; that has surprised me” “I was nervous about computers, but they show you and help you to look for things yourself on the internet”

A focused, dedicated and committed leadership supported by an equally fervent team of professionals, offers excellence in an on-going manner. The desire to exceed and improve is palpable and spreads to the learners themselves.” Principal Debbie Lavin, CBE said “We are delighted with this re-accreditation as the College continues to go from strength to strength. The Hair Show forms part of the students‟ qualification and gives them the opportunity to experience the reality of taking part in a live hair show. The show is the culmination of almost three month‟s work for the students to investigate the themes, create mood boards, prepare costumes and make-up ideas, and hone their designs and practical skills to create the „Total Look‟. The Level 2 theme was „Night and Day‟ and the Level 3 theme was „Timeless‟. Level 2 judging was conducted by Shona O‟Hanlon (last year‟s Total Look winner) Chris May (ex-student now doing exciting work in London for celebrities) and Sarah Benstead (Editor of The Beacon magazine). The Level 3 and Total Look judges were Selina Windridge and Sally Bradfield from Highbury College and Sarah Benstead. The judging took place prior to the live catwalk show in the Theatre and the results were read out at the end of the show. The Level 2s were judged on the Total Look of their model, so hair, make-up and costume. The Level 3s were judged not only on the Total Look of their model but also specifically on the technical expertise of their hairdressing skills. All prizes of hairdressing equipment and products were donated by Wella International, Salon Supplies Limited and Salon Services Limited. The flowers were donated by Mon Cherie Flowers. Photography was by Joe Hagan, Carlos Carubia and Ian Pacey. Course tutor and event organiser Annie Smith said “We had such a fantastic evening with an audience of over 400. I am delighted that it was such a huge success as the hairdressing staff, salon owners and students put so much effort in from the planning and design work, researching the costumes and hairstyles, creating the mood boards, to actually perfecting it all together on the day. Being held in the theatre gave it a big wow factor and I am delighted that the raffle raised over £300 for Beaulieu House Respite Centre.”

Amazing Talent at Total Look Hair Show 2014 Every seat was taken at the Medina Theatre venue when Level 2 and Level 3 hairdressing students from The Isle of Wight College wowed their audience

with another incredible show of talent and creativity at their annual Hair Show.

Employer Speed Dating Event a Big Success Learners on the Insights course organised and managed an Employer Speed Dating event, attended by over 80 students and 8 island employers and training providers: Medina Food Services, Pizza Express, What‟s Your Dream, The Falcon (Ryde), Tesco, Southern Water, Isle of Wight College Apprenticeships and Linda Stone from the Isle of Wight College itself. Three learners, Jack Jasper, Piers Joyner and Bobby Beddingham said “It took us 8 weeks to organise this event. College students sat down to chat rather informally with the employers, but were only allowed to do so for 5 minutes at a time before an alarm sounded and everyone had to change seats.”

Course tutor Gary Clough said “It‟s close to a real world experience. Young people are not being formally interviewed, but they get the same experience.” The funding for the event came from the Isle of Wight Council. Commissioning Manager for 14-19 in Education and Skills, Andrew Briggs, said that the money came as part of a grant for The Isle of Wight College, St George‟s School and St Catherine‟s School. Mr Briggs said “The main message of the event was to make all young people aware of employment opportunities on the island. The event provided a taster of what it‟s like to have a job interview, but without any of the stress.” Head of Department, Samantha Rooney, said “It‟s been a big success. Piers, Bobby and Jack put in such a huge amount of effort. There was a real buzz. We‟ll definitely do it again, and in a bigger venue next time.”

An Environmental or Engineering Career in Renewable Energy

Leading renewable energy expert and ex-Isle of Wight student Rufus Howard visited the College and gave a presentation to F6rm and college students on the skills and qualifications needed to work in the renewable energies sector.

Island 2050 Essay Competition Students are invited to submit a 750 word essay to [email protected] on „Island 2050‟ setting out a vision for a sustainable island of the future drawing on sustainability, environment, economy and society. Closing date 30 May. The winning essay will provide the opportunity to undertake a Summer placement at Royal HaskoningDHV which will be tailored to the individual‟s own interests, availability and circumstances.

Health Awareness Packs To raise money for the Air Ambulance Level 1 Health and Social Care students made and sold Health Awareness packs. They also sold key rings which they had made themselves. The Air Ambulance is their chosen charity for this year.

Train Story

As part of Enterprise Week, Business and Tourism students have helped the Isle of Wight Steam Railway by evaluating the Railway‟s new visitor experience at Havenstreet, „Train Story‟. Train Story is a £1.2M building which has been supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund of £0.97M. It has been constructed to enable much of the Steam Railway‟s valuable collection of locomotives, carriages and wagons to be kept under cover when not in use, enabling visitors to see these at close quarters. All of the students completed feedback questionnaires to enable the railway‟s team to gain a young person‟s perspective of the attraction. The students will then do more work for a course assignment which will help the Railway with further feedback on their findings. They will also evaluate the Railway‟s website and provide feedback/suggestions on its user friendliness and search engine optimisation. Tutor Sally Saunders said “It is great for our students to have a real life brief to work on, rather than just a theoretical task. They have a genuine opportunity to make a difference to the success of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway attraction.” Steam Railway Director Peter Conway said “We were delighted to assist the College by providing this visit. The students showed a lot of interest and the feedback has been positive and helpful. Even better, 6 students have completed application forms to join the Railway as volunteers.”

Cosmology Masterclass For F6rm Lecturers from the Portsmouth University institute of Cosmology and Gravitation(ICG) came to the College to deliver the Cosmology and Astrophysics Master Class. The event was attended by students from the Isle of Wight College F6rm along with students from Sandown Bay Academy. The ICG is a world class research institution for Cosmology and Astrophysics and it was a treat to have such prominent researchers at the top of their field come to the College and talk about Cosmology. Dr. Karen Masters and Dr. Jen Gupta were present to deliver two lectures “An introduction to Cosmology” and “The Galaxy Zoo” as well as two interactive sessions “a Lego model of the early universe” and “Exam question practice / Getting into University”. Dr. Masters studied Physics at Oxford before undertaking a PhD in Astronomy at Cornell University which she finished in 2005. She then did a 3 years as a postdoc at the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard University. Notably she was a finalist for the 2012 WISE Excellence Award (for early career women scientists dedicated to promoting STEM to girls) a project she may extend to A level students in Hampshire to which female Physicists at the College could attend!

Swap Shop

Business Level 3 Year 1 held a clothes, dvd and games Swap Shop. Each item given was worth one token to spend at the swap shop.

Dr. Gupta Received an MPhys in Physics with Astrophysics in 2008 from University of Manchester and remained there to do a PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics with Professor Ian Browne. Her thesis, „Mulitwavelength, studies of active galactic nuclei in the Fermi era”.

To be taught by such great minds was truly a pleasure, and the students reported a high level of interest in what they had to say. The session was of particular benefit to the A2 students who had just completed the Astrophysics portion of the specification and were able to further consolidate their knowledge and gain insight into what life in university would be like. For the AS students it helped focus their minds on university and gave them an insight into what lies ahead for them after A-Levels and how they should best focus their energy while they are with the College to meet their desired academic goals.

Feathers in Your Hair

Level 1 Hairdressing students raised money during Enterprise Week by selling coloured feather hair extensions and entwining them in hair.

It is scheduled for 24 hours daily and can be watched at any time of the day. The schedule is updated regularly to reflect new content produced. WebWaterfalls is a great way to gain exposure for TV and Film production work and Raindance Film Festival, Bournemouth University and Southampton Solent all have their own channels as well so we are in good company. To date it has had 9361 views so far which is far in excess of what one would expect on Youtube for a similar time period. The benefit of WebWaterfalls is that it is populated by education and industry professionals who are all focussed on TV and Film production. The link above is best viewed in Chrome as Internet Explorer does not work so well.

New On-line TV Channel

Level 3 Media Production students have designed and produced a new on-line TV channel called IWCTV. It features a range of material including music videos, animations TV pilots, corporate and community films and short dramatic pieces. http://webwaterfalls.com/#!/player?m=wf&i=w52e7d859bf004

F6rm in Finals of High Stakes Inter-college Quiz Show 2014

Eight of the top colleges in Hampshire competed in the High Stakes Inter-college Quiz which was devised, arranged, televised and hosted by Southampton Solent University students. The High Stakes Inter-college Quiz Show came to a spectacular end with Isle of Wight College F6rm and Richard Taunton Sixth Form College drawing in the Final and going to a tie-breaker question. Richard Taunton College won on the tie-breaker but F6rm came a very creditable runner-up, losing by only one point. Well done to all involved! This was the first time this event has been held and Southampton Solent University are hoping to make it an annual event.

Helping the Police

Public Services Students visited Police Headquarters in Portsmouth. They spent the whole day working with the police and the police dogs watching them practice in preparation for the police to support a football game later that day. The students saw the dogs in action, whist practising with their trainers on controlled attacks, and saw first-hand how aggressive the dogs appeared one minute and then how happy and responsive they were the next. The students also saw the police in action, and volunteered themselves to be at the battering end of riot officers‟ large shields in a riot control demonstration. All students felt it was very valuable seeing the police and the dogs in action as opposed to reading about it or seeing something on the television.

Saving the Dolphin The Level 2 animal care students worked with the (BDMLR) British Divers Marine Life Rescue to find enterprising ways of raising awareness and the profile of the organisation. The students had a talk on rescuing marine mammals and undertook a „mock‟ dolphin rescue. Alongside raising the profile of the organisation the students raised £344 along the way.

A Career with the Royal Marines and Royal Navy The Royal Marines visited the College and gave a presentation and DVD about the vast range of careers available with the Royal Marines and the Royal Navy. Over 30 students attended

Royal Marines Taster Day

30 learners from Level 2 and Level 3 Public Services courses had an insight into life as a Royal Marine when they attended an Insight Day at Gibraltar Barrack, Hawley Lake in Camberley. The students had to take part in 5 tasks:

Laser quest

Fast boat RIB ride

Command task/team building

Physical training

Weapons and first aid

The five tasks gave a taste of the training undertaken by the Royal Marines. It was a good day and the students learned a lot. The Royal Marines Officer in charge of the day said they were the best group he had seen recently.

Motor Show

Motor Vehicle department held a mini car show plus „guess how many balloons in the Mini‟. They held competitions to win a remote control model car, and a free MOT. The winners were Julie Newnham and Kevin West.

Lawn Mower Servicing

Motor Vehicle learners also held a lawn mower servicing day for staff and students to bring in their equipment for a free service.

Heavy-Duty Parasol Bases

Brickwork learners produced heavy duty parasol base to withstand strong winds. Ideal for pubs, cafes etc. Manufactured from recycled car tyres, filled with concrete and then painted in a range of colours.
