The old dog snoozed in his dog house, with nothing but his big nose poking out. The cat crept closer and closer to the big bone that the dog had only half finished.‐ When the cat was only a few inches away, and certain that she was going to have a fantastic lunch, a low rumble burst forth from the dog house. It grew louder and louder, and the dog’s nose began to twitch. Just as the cat reached for the bone…

As the moon slid out from behind the clouds, the old house, widely believed to be haunted, stood out against the black night like a ghost. Frank crept closer and closer to it. Behind him, the school bully, Roger, who had dared him to go into it. Frank thought he saw something moving in the window. Trembling with fear, but determined to earn Roger’s respect, he climbed the steps up. Behind him, Roger was doubled over with laughter. With a creek, the door of the house flew open…

Katie was excited about tonight. Happily, she put on her big, red shoes and bright, yellow outfit. Her mom helped Katie paint her face white with a big, red circle on each cheek. Just before Katie ran out the door to meet her friends, she attached her large, squeaky nose and placed a bright blue, pointy hat on top of her head. She grabbed an empty bag and went out into the night.

Identifying theme:

Dan was really looking forward to eating some cake. But when his mother sliced the cake, she made the pieces very small. “Why is my piece so small?” Dan asked. “Because there are a lot of people here,” his mother told him. “We have to make sure that we have enough cake for everybody. His mother continued to cut and serve the cake and soon there was no more cake left. Disappointed that he would not be able to have seconds, Dan went off to sit and eat his tiny piece of cake. There was a small girl sitting at his table. She looked longingly at Dan’s cake. “I did not get any cake,” she said. “By the time I got up there, all of the cake was gone.” “Here,” Dan

said, handing the girl a fork. “I will share my cake with you.” The little girl’s face lit up, and suddenly Dan felt better.

It was Rebecca’s turn to cook dinner. Rebecca did not like to cook. So on her night, she usually heated up a few cans of chili, or cooked a frozen pizza. “This pizza is no good,” her brother Frank said. “It tastes like cardboard. The cheese tastes like rubber.” Rebecca thought that Frank’s complaint was petty, especially since he ate everything on his plate. “I am going to make a pizza every time it is my turn to cook,” Rebecca said. “Since I know that you will eat it.”

Wendy enjoyed spending time with her grandmother. Her grandmother told her stories about what the world was like when she was a little girl, a very long time ago. Wendy also liked her grandmother’s caramel cake and blackberry cobbler. There was only one problem. Wendy’s grandmother always made casseroles for dinner. Wendy didn’t want to hurt her grandmother’s feelings. But she hated casseroles, and she couldn’t help hesitating before taking a bite. But she did take a bite, because she loved the way that her grandmother’s eyes lit up when she saw Wendy eating her home cooked‐ food. When Wendy’s grandmother smiled, suddenly the casserole didn’t taste so bad.

13. What is the theme of the story?_______________________________________________________________________________

Ryan’s mother was trying to learn to cook. She was not very good at it, though. One night she burned the casserole. Another night she scalded the soup. Ryan and his father did their best to eat what she put in front of them, though. “She will get better,” Ryan’s father told Ryan. “We have to encourage her so that she will not give up.” One afternoon Ryan’s mother put too much baking soda in the cookies and they were so bitter that Ryan had to spit a bite of cookie out into his napkin when his mother wasn’t looking. “I am sorry that I am not a good cook,” his mother told him. “That is okay,” Ryan said. “The important thing is that you keep working on it, and then you will get better.”

Sequence: Read the following passage and put the events in order:

32. Cameron was a star swimmer at Eldred Middle School. He had been swimming competitively since he was five years old. He was to swim in three events and one pass on at the meet on Tuesday. As always, Cameron had his bowl of spaghetti and meatballs before preparing for the meet. He also always has a Rice Krispies bar immediately following his warm up routine. When he prepares for a meet, the first thing that he does is stretch his muscles and warm-up by running in place, immediately after stretching. Then, he does ten push-ups followed by a run up and down the middle school bleachers. Cameron swam well. He placed first twice and got a third place in the 500-meter butterfly stroke.

Cameron ate a Rice Krispies bar. Cameron ran up and down the bleachers. He did pushups. Cameron won his first swimming event. Cameron ate meatballs and spaghetti. He stretched his muscles.

33. Mr. Matters was a very well liked neighbor that we had for years. One day he woke up and didn’t feel so well. He decided to go to see Dr. Jerome to see what the problem might be. Dr. Jerome is the best! Dr. Jerome did some blood work on Mr. Matters. He found that his blood contains very little vitamins and minerals. He recommended that Mr. Matters begins to eat more fruits and vegetables. In addition, he wanted Mr. Matters to exercise three times a week for thirty minutes every time. Mr. Matters wanted to feel better, so he followed the good doctor’s advice. Every morning he woke up, he followed the same routine. First, he ate a grapefruit and drank a glass of water. He would then walk two miles. He would end off with a full body stretch. Then he would ride his bike to work. As months went on, Mr. Matters felt a ton better. He began helping Ms. Stewart prune her garden every night after work. As a form of payment, Ms. Stewart would always make Mr. Matters a healthy dinner.

Write two similarities and two differences for each character:

35. Frogs need to live in near water to survive while Toads don’t need to. Toads have rough, dry, bumpy skin while Frogs have smooth and moist skin. Frogs have a narrow body while Toads have a wider body. Toads have short and not very powerful hind legs while Frogs have longer hind legs. Frogs don’t have many predators while Toads have. They both are considered mammals.

36. Wolves and foxes belong to the same Canidae family but are different in many respects. A fox is medium sized and comes with a narrow snout and fluffy tail while a wolf is large. The wolf is much feared by human beings as they have a more carnivorous nature. Foxes are friendlier to human beings. Foxes do not like to live in packs but only with two or three companions. Wolves live in packs of 6 to 10. Wolves prey on large animals. Since Foxes have a small body frame, they only hunt small animals and do not prey on bigger animals. Foxes also eat insects, fruits, and berries. The fox as well as the wolf are endangered animals. The babes of a wolf are known as pups, and those of the fox are known as kits.

Read the following passage and answer the following questions:

Butterflies and Moths How is a butterfly like a moth? Both are flying insects with either brightly colored wings or wings with very interesting designs. Both sip nectar from flowers using tubes that curl up when not in use. Both moths and butterflies also develop in four stages: egg, caterpillar, cocoon or chrysalis, and adult. In fact, butterflies and moths are so similar that they are the only insects whose wings are covered by scales. However, butterflies and moths are also very different. Some of those differences are plain and simple. Butterflies are the beautifully colored summertime insects flying from flower to flower during the day. Moths, on the other hand, are the beautifully colored summertime insects flying around at night. Often, moths will fly circles around streetlights because they are drawn to any form of illumination. Another apparent difference between butterflies and moths is the way they position their wings while resting. Butterflies hold their wings vertically above their backs, like hands pressed together, palm to palm. Moths, on the contrary, generally spread their wings horizontally to their sides, as if drying them in moonlight. Finally, there is one difference between butterflies and moths that is not quite so easily seen. The antennae of butterflies are plain thread-like strands ending in little bulbs while the antennae of moths look like thin feathers with no bulbs at the tips. Butterflies and moths are two of nature’s most diverse and beautiful insects. 155. How are butterflies and moths ALIKE?

a. Both butterflies and moths develop in four stages. b. Both butterflies and moths fly around flowers during the day. c. Both butterflies and moths have the same type of antennae. d. Both butterflies and moths spread their wings out to the sides when resting.

156. How are butterflies and moths DIFFERENT? a. Butterflies fly during the day, while moths fly at night. b. Butterflies are drawn to light, while moths fly to flowers. c. Butterflies begin as an egg, while moths begin as a cocoon. d. Butterfly wings are covered by scales, while moth wings are not.

157. Which words describe BOTH butterflies and moths? a. tightly pressed wingsb. summer and winter insectsc. bulbed antennae d. beautifully designed

158. What did the author compare to “resting butterflies’ wings”? a. flowers

Read the story. Then fill in the chart of causes and effects . Jeremiah, Jasmine, and their parents had wanted to visit the beach for years. As a

result, the entire family had been doing their part to make extra money. Jeremiah gets up early on weekends, so that he can deliver newspapers. Jasmine has been able to help some of their neighbors with lawn care and housekeeping. The children’s dad has been watching sale items and saving a lot of money on their weekly grocery shopping. Mom has also stopped buying shoes, which saves the family about $20 per week. Not to mention, the family has reduced their eating out habits to only one per week, which saves them about $40 per week. If the family can keep this up, they are definitely going to the beach this summer.
