INTRODUCTION OUR HISTORY

Our History

A look back at Briggs & Stratton’s over 105 years in business clearly depicts a company continuously striving for innovation and dedicated to increasing success. Beginning in 1908, the founders of the company, the inventor Stephen F. Briggs and the investor Harold M. Stratton laid a foundation for the future based on their unrelenting vision of innumerable possibilities for Briggs & Stratton Corporation.

The company first ventured into the automobile manufacturing business and from there it progressed into producing automobile parts such as locks, switches, igniters.

In 1919 Briggs & Stratton acquired and took over production of the A.O. Smith Motor Wheel, a product used as a power source for bicycles and the Flyer, a four wheel motorized vehicle. It also led to the development of the type ’P’ engine, a step which revolutionized the 4-cycle gasoline engine industry and set the course for Briggs & Stratton

to become the world’s largest manufacturer of air-cooled gasoline engines.

Briggs & Stratton was now providing power for people in every aspect of life and developed several new models in the 1930s.

In 1953 Briggs & Stratton revolutionized the Lawn and Garden Industry by developing the first lightweight aluminium engine. By 1958 the aluminium engine accounted for 80% of engines shipped.

Since then, Briggs & Stratton became a large and successful company. Most recent innovations include the ReadyStart® starting system, DOV® technology, TransportGuard™ and the line of E-SERIES engines, as well as the new InStart® technology.

PRODUCT INNOVATION E-SERIES INITIATIVE

E-SERIES Initiative

The E-SERIES Initiative places reduced exhaust emissions at the heart of all engine performance. Our commitment is to surpass the Stage 2 European Exhaust Emissions standards by at least 25%*.

The E-SERIES Initiative is not just about emissions, it is also about an evolution in overall standards that will widen choice and enhance the end user experience.

The founding principles of power, reliability and durability remain core to the Briggs & Stratton value proposition.

In addition the E-SERIES Initiative ensures that these principles further evolve to include easier starting, improved performance and an enhanced customer experience.

As of 2014, all Briggs & Stratton small vertical shaft engines now perform to the E-SERIES standards.*2010/26/EC

PRODUCT INNOVATION EUROPEAN ENGINE HIERARCHY

The E-SERIES sets the benchmark performance for the outdoor power equipment industry. In addition to improved emissions performance these engines deliver the power, performance and reliability users have come to expect from Briggs & Stratton. Excellent engines to count on, to get the job done.

The EX-SERIES of engines takes all the best attributes of the E-SERIES, but delivers performance attributes for the more demanding consumer. The EX-SERIES engines offer the best power in the series class and combine this with the ingenious ReadyStart® system. Maximum power with one-pull effort less starting. A powerful performance engine series.

The green EX-SERIES adds another layer of performance to the EX-SERIES engines. It provides an engine for the environmentally conscious customer without loss of power or starting performance. These engines feature ECOPLUS™ emissions reducing technology to further reduce the evaporative fuel emissions when the machine is not in use.

The IS-SERIES engines represent the ultimate performance package in the engine line-up. They naturally incorporate the heritage attributes of power, performance and reliability, but add the most innovative and easiest starting ever seen on a lawnmower. IS-SERIES engines have Lithium-lon batteries built-in to provide repeated and reliable starting without the need of a rope-pull. Effortless ingenious starting.

PRODUCT INNOVATION INSTART®

InStart® - A New Approach

The 775IS-SERIES™ DOV® features the new and revolutionary InStart® system which will set a new standard for easy and instant starting for walk-behind lawnmowers. Equipment powered by this exceptional engine will combine all the benefits of a powerful petrol engine with the easiest starting process - ever!

By integrating a specially designed Lithium-Ion battery in the engine, the 775IS-SERIES will provide the new levels of effortless starting. No priming, no choking, no pulling - simply push the button or squeeze the bail and you are mowing - InStart instant starting technolgy does the work - everytime.

Super quick charging means the battery can be fully charged in 60 minutes and provide the mower weeks of starting for an average sized lawn. If the charge runs out during mowing, the battery can be partly charged in a few minutes to allow the lawn to be finished.

InStart instant starting technology is the optimum choice when looking for the ultimate in starting performance.

Mechanical Governor

Advanced mechanical governing systems are a standard feature on the E-SERIES engine range. The governing system allows for better engine speed and performance under variable load conditions. TransportGuard™

With a single flip of a switch - turn off the engine and the fuel. The innovative TransportGuard™ system introduced in 2010 is exclusive to the Vanguard™ 5.5 - 10 Gross HP* single cylinder engines, ensuring trouble free equipment transportation.

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES ECO PLUS™

Evaporative emissions happen in two ways:

PermeationPermeation emissions are the result of reactive organic gas molecules penetrating through the walls of the fuel system components, e.g. fuel tank walls, fuel lines, gaskets and seals.

VentingVenting emissions are the result of fuel evaporating. The fuel evaporation will exit the fuel system by way of venting.

Engine Emissions & ECO PLUS™

Briggs & Stratton has a long-standing commitment to protect the environment and through continuous R&D investments in advanced technology, has reduced the emissions produced by its engines by up to 75% since 1995.

Driven by this commitment was the introduction of the E-SERIES engine range with exhaust emissions 25% below current European exhaust emissions standards. The ECO PLUS™ range goes one step further, in addition to reducing exhaust emissions, it also reduces evaporative emissions.

Evaporative emissions occur when an engine is not in use. During equipment storage, whether it be a lawnmower, tiller, or generator, the fuel in the tank evaporates and the hydrocarbons together with nitrogen-oxides pollute the air resulting in increased petrol emissions. ECO PLUS significantly reduces these evaporative emissions and as a result lessens the petrol odour in your storage area.

Production Processes

Not only is Briggs & Stratton building engines which are producing less emissions, we are also continuously improving our production processes and aim to protect limited resources.

That’s why we are using over 36 M kg of recycled aluminium in our engines annually and also recycled cast iron and steel. We recycle nearly 130,000 litres of oil every year.

In addition the emissions generated by the engine painting process have been reduced by 85% since 1990.
