updating. Citations and abstracts with full-text access depending on Brown University Library’s subscriptions or open access publications. Biomed focus SciFinder Scholar (http://www.brown.edu/Facilities/University_Library/eresources/edatabases/sfs.html access only by Brown community with computer client downloaded from CIS) 1894 – present, comprehensive database of chemical literature from CAS databases produced by Chemical Abstracts Service. It covers the full spectrum of chemistry-related information, including chemical structures, properties, biosequences, polymers, analysis, materials, and life sciences. Coverage includes journals, trade magazines, dissertations, patents, conferences, etc. To use, software must be downloaded from CIS onto each computer. 6 concurrent users at a time. Citations and abstracts with full-text access depending on Brown University Library’s subscriptions. Knovel Library Current, Collection of science and technology reference books and databases from major publishers. Many tables and graphs are interactive. Knovel’s “flagship” books are the Plastics Design Library Series, Perry’s Chemical Engineers Handbook, K-Essentials (7 free titles from print and Knovel-created composites), Lange’s Handbook of Chemistry, and a host of titles in mechanics & mechanical engineering featuring Mark’s Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers along with the ASME Boiler and Pressure vessel codes. Knovel’s toxicology offerings are quite comprehensive with 21 books. Popular books being the Dictionary of Substances and Their Effects, Sittig's Handbook of Toxic and Hazardous Chemicals and Carcinogens, Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, and, Patty's Toxicology and Industrial Hygiene. Knovel has recently partnered with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers to make available the many important books in the Center for Chemical Process Safety Guidelines Series. Lastly, Knovel has many of the important DoD Military Handbooks, including a fully interactive version of MIL-HDBK-5H: Metallic Materials and Elements for Aerospace Vehicle Structures. Functions include interactive Excel tables and Equation plotter tips – Each information source including Google has unique content, coverage, and

presentation of results/hits. Each information source including Google has a unique toolbox of advanced searching features including its Query Language.

Databases complied by algorithms – e.g. Google Scholar, Web of Science, Scirus Databases compiled by information specialists – SPIRES, IEL, SciFinder, PubMed

(subject search more powerful and focused than keyword because of assignment of standardized subjects/descriptors)

Multi-database searching one at a time is the only way to be assured of comprehensiveness.

Multi-database searching one at a time for a literature survey is essential. ADDENDUM Compendex Search query: nanotechnology; autostemming off; sort by Publication year

Check out: Search tips Help Sort by relevance (algorithm) or date Limit by document type, treatment type, languages, dates Autostemming off Browse indexes

IEL with IEEE Xplore search interface Basic search: nanotechnolgy Also can browse journals and conferences by name and ieee standards by a variety of navigations Help gives information on unique toolbox for searching

Page 9: ENGINEERING TOOLS, TIPS, AND LIMITATIONS · 6/13/2007  · The Smithsonian/NASA Astrophysics Data System maintains three bibliographic databases containing more than 5 million records:

search is keyword in all fields including title, abstract not full-text view as citation or citation and abstract Search within results Brown subscription gives access to AbstractPlus and pdf

Page 10: ENGINEERING TOOLS, TIPS, AND LIMITATIONS · 6/13/2007  · The Smithsonian/NASA Astrophysics Data System maintains three bibliographic databases containing more than 5 million records:

AbstractPlus has highlighted term(s), subject terms (controlled indexing that link to other articles in IEL), terms assigned that link, and author keywords that link, references (some linked) Author links to papers by same author in IEL Citation download requires extra steps for RefWorks and BibTex currently

Page 11: ENGINEERING TOOLS, TIPS, AND LIMITATIONS · 6/13/2007  · The Smithsonian/NASA Astrophysics Data System maintains three bibliographic databases containing more than 5 million records:

Advanced search All fields + full-text of articles – broadest search possible but not very precise. Combine terms Limit results by publication, date range Organize display of results
